Chapter ~5~

A girl's sobbing could be heard in the closet.

"I'm sorry... I failed you. I failed everyone..."

Lettuce woke up on the carpet, panting. She looked up.

She was in her room.

Lettuce stood up, walking over to her closet. The sobbing continued as she opened the door...

To reveal a clone of herself and Tommyinnit.

Tommy looked up at her and his eyes furrowed, looking to the angel and the girl with mounting confusion.

Lettuce paid him no mind, though, and knelt at the angel's side. She dug in her pockets for a tissue and gave it to her.

The angel sniffed and wiped her tears. She looked up and surprise entered her face.

"What...."

"Hey, Lettuce."

"So that's her name!" Tommy exclaimed.

The angel sniffed again, looking away. "What do you want?"

"I'm here to bring you back."

"What's the use?" she spat. "They're all gone."

Lettuce fell silent, still staring at her counterpart. A pang entered her chest and she felt her heart pounding against her chest, anxiety quickly rising up her throat. She pushed the feelings back, looking away.

"You can still fix this," Lettuce breathed.

"No, I can't. They're all gone."

"Who knows? Maybe they aren't. Maybe the only reason why they're gone is because you've given up." Lettuce took her hand. The angel quickly withdrew from her grasp, burying her head in her lap again. "Can't you just try again?"

"I don't want to try. I don't want to try ever again... I-I want to-"

"No, you don't. You don't want to die. You know it in your heart. You're just trying to convince yourself that you're useless, that no one cares about you," Lettuce stroked her hair. The girl sobbed again. "But you're an angel."

The angel fell silent. She looked up at Lettuce, and Lettuce gave her a warm smile.

"It'll get better. It may seem hopeless now, but in a few months, everything will be alright again, I promise."

"B-but-" the angel sniffed. "What if it doesn't?"

"It will. I'm sure of it. It may not come now, or in a few days or months, but one day, it will. Only if you don't give up, though," Lettuce added.

She waited as the angel rested her head on her lap, thinking.

"Do it for Tommy. For Tubbo. For every one of your characters."

"But they're not even mine."

"Maybe they weren't. But you made them yours. They depend on you, now."

Tears ran down the angel's face, dropping down onto her glowing purple dress, but she had stood up, wiping the tears from her eyes. Lettuce caught her as she fell down again.

"You can do it," Lettuce said.

She sniffed again, taking a long, labored sigh. Her halo flickered, on the verge of disappearing, on giving up. "I just want to give them a hug, honestly... but they would blame me if they found out-"

"No, they won't."

"Yes, they will! Schlatt did, and Tommy's barely understanding. I love them, but... I... I like to see them in pain, it makes such a heartbreaking story but I know that I love them so much but I just want to see them-"

"No." Lettuce slammed her hand against the fuzzy carpet floor, so warm yet so irritating. "Listen to me. That doesn't matter right now. They need you. Tommy needs you. I need you."

The girl's lips trembled.

"... If you're wrong-"

"You have every right to destroy it all again," Lettuce told her. "I just want you to give it another chance."

The girl fell silent, then nodded.

"... okay..." she said quietly.

Then the two Lettuce's smiled at each other, both making their own doors to her world once more. And, holding hands, they stepped back into freedom.
