Chapter 9 - Empty

They were all sitting at the couches, drinking TARDIS tea. Sam called it that since the box the tea bags were in had no name brand on it, but it came from the TARDIS. Along with the tea they had marshmallows and sweets on sticks. Sam smiled to herself and took one of the sticks. She placed the stick on the one side of her cup.

“I dub thee cup of tea.” She said, moving the stick to the opposite side of the cup.

“TARDIS tea.” She said, retreating the stick and removing one of the chocolates from it, popping it in her mouth. They though the rest of the day was going to be peaceful, like it recently was. Apparently not. The TARDIS suddenly shook to one side, everyone flying about, the glass from the tea cups breaking. Sam managed to catch onto the railing around the console with one arm. She took a deep breathe to calm herself. She twisted herself so that she could look at the monitor. It showed her TARDIS accelerating through the Time Vortex. But that wasn’t all. Some sort of metal pod was attached to her TARDIS, forcing it along on its path. But no, that was not all. The metal pod was being chased by the Doctor.

“Is there some way we can move out of its path?!” She yelled to Simon as she he clawed his way up to the console.

“Don’t know, I’ll try, depending on how attached the pod is to the TARDIS.” He said as he jumped over the railing so that his back was against the railing, keeping him in place.

“Uh, I don’t we-.” He was suddenly cut off as the TARDIS crashed into its side, making everyone fly to the couches. Once everything calmed, Simon inspected the monitor. Everything was blurry until it finally cleared up.

“Where are we, Simon?” Sam questioned.

“London.” He answered. Sam nodded.

“Okay. When?” She asked him.

“1941. During the Blitz.” He answered and Sam hit her head on the wall behind her.

“So the Germans are bombing  from their zeppelins, yayyy.” She groaned and sat up, a pain in her back from crashing into the wall so hard.

“Oww.” She groaned in pain as she tried to rub her back.

“What about that pod and the Doctor?” Allen questioned once he too regained his composure.

“They landed here before us, apparently. The pod being first.” He answered and Sam nodded.

“Would we need to go outside or can we just leave?” Toby asked from beside her.

“Oh come now Toby, we all are curious about what that pod was. So I suggest we go see what it is.” Sam said with confidence.

“During the time of the Blitz?” Roni asked, sceptical. Sam nodded.

“Of course!” She said and positioned herself at the wall. She jumped off the wall and grabbed onto the railing. She clawed her way up to the front side of the console where she positioned herself again. She jumped and grabbed onto the edge of the open TARDIS doors. She had to move so, seeing as the TARDIS was on its side. She pulled herself out of the TARDIS, which disguised itself as an underground cellar doors in an alleyway. Once she stood on her feet, she looked down into the TARDIS, still seeing her companions against the wall.

“Come on! We don’t got all day!” She groaned. Vincent and Toby then started to claw their way up as well. Toby jumped first and he nearly missed the edge, so Sam caught his wrists and pulled him up. Vincent had to trouble in catching the edge and pulling himself up. One by one, the others joined them as well. Sam clapped her hands in excitement as Simon closed the doors. She then hooked her arms through Roni and Simon’s.

“Let’s go!” She said and started marching down the alleyway and into the street. The streets were abandoned, of course. Sam stood there and debated which direction to go. On the left were more streets, and on the right it seemed to led to a more grass clearing and a small hill with a sort of abandoned hospital on top.

“Right!” She yelled and turned to go right. Her companions looked sceptical as they walked. Luckily for them, it wasn’t bombing time in a while. Sam kept a close eye on her surroundings as they walked. She abandoned Roni and Simon’s arms and started to run up the hill, her companions merely following. There was a big sign that read ‘Albion Hospital’ at the front.

“I really don’t think this is a good idea!” Toby yelled out.

“Exactly! Let’s check it out!” Sam said in excitement as she ran to the front doors. She threw them open and ran inside. It was dark inside, only a little bit of moonlight sweeping through the windows., and some dim lights.Owen turned to Sam to tell her it really wasn’t a good decision, but she was gone.

“Sam?!” They all started to frantically search for her through the hospital. Sam was walking down the hall ways, not yet entering a room. She was following a shadow she swore she saw. She turned down a hall and saw the figure enter a room. The figure had a white coat on, he was a Doctor. Sam went and stood at the wall to listen, not entering.

“You’ll find them everywhere. Every bed in every ward. Hundreds of them.” She heard that doctor say to someone.

“Yes I saw. Why are they still wearing gas masks?” Another voice came, sounding a little confused.

“They’re not. Who are you?” The doctor demanded.

“I’m a…are you the doctor?” The other one asked, moving from the subject of identity.

“For a constant time. And you are?”

“Nancy send me.” He said, still moving from identification.

“Nancy? That means you’ve been asking about the bomb.” The doctor said, sounding as if he was pacing a little.

“Yes.”

“What do you know about it?”

“Nothing. That’s why I was asking. What do you know?”

“Only what it’s done.”

“These people, they were all caught up in the blast?”

“None of them were.” The doctor then started to chuckle, coughing at the end.

“Your very sick.”

“Dying I should think, I just haven’t been able to find the time. Are you a doctor?”

“I have my moments.” He answered with a little amusement, and that’s when Sam knew he was the Doctor, unlike the old man who was just a doctor.

“Have you examined any of them yet?” The doctor asked.

“No.” The Doctor replied.

“Don’t touch the flesh.” The doctor warned.

“Which one?”

“Any one.” Sam then heard him walked over to a patient before hearing the familiar sound of his Sonic Screwdriver.

“And you girl? You were following me earlier. Are you a doctor?” Sam heard and silently cursed under her breath before entering the room, the doctor and the Doctor now staring at her.

“Are you a doctor?” He repeated and Sam shook her head.

“I’m a retired Soldier.” Sam answered.

“What do you do now then?” He asked her, curious.

“I’m a part time traveller.” The doctor and the Doctor heard that stamen differently. The doctor heard it as  ‘a part-time traveller’, meaning she only travels when there’s a job for her. The Doctor heard it as ‘a-part time-traveller’, meaning she can travel through time because she’s a part of it. Both statements together is actually correct, but she made no move to say any of that.

“Conclusions?” The doctor asked the Doctor as he was examining the subjects.

“Massive head trauma, mostly to the left side. Collapsing of the chest, mostly to the right side. There’s some scaring on the back of the hand and the gasmask seems to be fused to the flesh but I can’t see any burns.” He concluded with a confused expression.

“Examine another one.” The doctor said and the Doctor hesitantly did so.

“This is impossible.” He said, looking to the doctor for answers.

“What is?” Sam asked, a little confused with the entire situation. It was like you go for a walk and a piano falls on you. Not entirely possible, but that’s how Sam felt. She was suddenly thrown into this time, forced by an unknown craft. Although she could leave, the fact that the Doctor, the man in front of her, chased after it, meant that it was something big. That’s the main reason she really wanted to investigate, that and the obvious, her curiosity. Curiosity killed the cat, but there’s a little more truth to that in which it compares it to Sam. The cat has 9 lives, 9 times of stupid doing and 9 times of following it’s curiosity. Cats don’t actually have 9 lives, but let’s say they do. Sam has 13 lives, 4 more than the cat. Curiosity isn’t going to kill her immediately, obviously, she was smarter than a cat and much older. The reason why Sam thinks this metaphor is really important, is because she wants to prove it wrong. She wanted curiosity to mean adventure from which she survives, along with her mates. Although, when she explained it to her companions, they were utterly confused. But that’s normal. Everything Sam says doesn’t make sense, so that even the cat can’t survive her rambling. The Doctor went over to yet another patient and examined him.

“This isn’t possible.” He concluded once more, frowning in confusion.

“No.” The doctor agreed.

“They all got the same injuries.”

“Yes.” The doctor agreed, bored.

Exactly the same.”

“Yes.”

“Identical. All of them! Right down to the scar on the back of their hand. How did it happen how did it start?” The Doctor rambled on and Sam examined the doctor, who seemed to be examining the back of his hand.

“When that bomb dropped there was just one victim.” He explained.

“Dead?”

“At first. His injuries were truly dreadful. By the following morning every doctor and nurse who treated him, who touched him, had those exact same injuries. By the morning after that every patient, every ward, had the exact same injuries. Within a week the hospital. Physical injuries…as plague. Can you explain that? What would you say was the cause of death?” The doctor explained. The Doctor was utterly confused at the moment, while Sam couldn’t help but stare at the back of his hand.

“The head trauma.”

“No.”

“The collapse of the chest-.”

“No.”

“Alright. What was the cause of death?”  He finally asked.

“There wasn’t one.” He finally said and Sam silently cursed under her breath and made her way to the door. She peered outside to try and see if her companions are in the hall. They weren’t. She went back inside to see both doctors staring at her. She had a clear look of panic on her face, for she had no idea what they could do. The Doctor was still trying to figure out the doctor’s words, but it soon came clear to him.

“Do they want something?” Sam questioned the doctor.

“Well, they seem to be searching for the mother.” He explained.

“The mother? Of that little boy?” The Doctor asked.

“Yes, I would presume so.” He nodded his head.

“They’re in every ward? Every patient?” Sam asked, completely panicking.

“I said so, didn’t I?” He retorted.

“Hey, calm down.” The Doctor said as he walked over to her and placed his hand on her shoulder.

“You get infected by just a touch? It starts with the mark on the back of the hand?” She asked him, taking heavy breathes.

“Well of course. Wait, how’d you know it starts on the back of your hand?” He asked suspiciously and Sam pointed to his hand.

“Because your infected.” She said and the Doctor had a start of look of horror on his face. The doctor started coughing again. The Doctor tried to go to him but the doctor held his hand up.

“Stay back! Listen to me. Top floor. Room 802. That’s where they took the first victim ,the one from the crash site. And you must find Nancy again.”

“Nancy?” The Doctor questioned.

“It was her brother. She knows more than she’s saying and she tell me but she-.” He was cut off by his breathe hitching. His hand went to his neck as he struggled to get air.

“M-mummy.” He said and Sam took a step back.

“You my mummy?” He asked, tears forming in his eyes. A gasmask then started to from on his face before he passed out.

“Hello!” A distant voice sounded and both the Doctor and Sam turned toward the door. There was a knock on a distant door.

“Hello!” Another voice sounded, this time a female’s. The Doctor and Sam exited the room and down the corridor where two figures appeared. The one was a blonde girl in a black jacket and had a Union Jack on her shirt. The other one wore his usual captain’s cloak. Sam was a little more at ease now that he was there, but still couldn’t get over the fact that an apocalypse might break out any second, if not already happened.

“Good evening. I hope we’re not interrupting. Captain Jack Harkness, I heard all about you on the way over.” He introduced himself as he shook the Doctor’s hand, not yet noticing Sam behind the Doctor.

“He knows. I had to tell him. About us being Time Agents.” The Doctor just gave a little nod.

“It’s a real pleasure to meet you mister Spock.” Captain said, hitting the Doctor on his back.

“Oh, and who might you be?” He asked, walking over to Sam once he saw her.

“I’d like to know as well.” The Doctor said as Captain took Sam’s hand and kissed it, staring at her face.

“Must be early in your time line then.” Sam said with a nod as she took her hand back.

“Ahh, so we meet in the future? How wonderful. I’ll surely remember a face like yours.” He flirted and Sam rolled her eyes.

“Yeah, well, it’s not this face you’re going to be meeting.” She said and the Doctor gave her a glance that screamed for answers, but not in front of them, of course. She gave him a knowing glance, causing his eyes to go wide.

“Hello, I’m Rose Tyler.” The girl introduced, holding her hand out. Sam gladly took it.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, I’m Sam.” She introduced and shook her hand. They let go and the Captain walked on, Sam followed behind. She could hear the Doctor and Rose bicker behind them a little about the title Rose gave the Doctor, ‘mister Spock’, and where she had been. They then followed Captain and Sam.

“I’m guessing your also a time lady, miss Sam?” Captain asked, trying to flirt but she just rolled her eyes.

“How’d you figure that ,genius?” She retorted.

“Well you said you met me in the future and your clothes is way out of date.” He said referring to the clothes she was wearing. She wore a dip dye tunic going from top turquoise, white and then a chocolate brown. A black lace bell flare pants with a floral pattern. Black high heels that cross in the front. A silver necklace with a silver metal ribbon attached to it. A black bracelet around her right wrist, and black rose earing.

“Yeah, well, I decided on something new today. Didn’t think I’d end up in the time of the zombie apocalypse.” She said and he chuckled. They went inside the ward again and he examined patients with whatever was on his wrist.

“This just isn’t possible. How did this happen?” He asked as he paced around the ward.

“What kind of ship landed here?” The Doctor asked with crossed arms.

“What?” Captain asked in surprise.

“He said it was a war skip. He stole it. Parked it somewhere out there, somewhere where a bomb’s going to fall on it, unless we make him an offer.” Rose explained, looking a little cross.

“What kind of war skip?” The Doctor questioned.

“Does it matter? It’s got nothing to do with this!” He insisted.

“This started, at the bomb site. It’s got everything to do with it! What kind of war skip?” The Doctor demanded as he walked to the Captain.

“An ambulance!”  Captain yelled in frustration.

“Look, that’s what you chased through the Time Vortex.” Captain said, clicking on the device strapped around his arm until a blue hologram appeared, showing the metal  pod.

“It’s space junk. I wanted to kid you it was valuable. It’s empty. I made sure of it. Nothing but a shell. I threw it at you. If all this was caused by anything, it would be whatever It flew into and brought along.” Captain said in frustration.

“No.” Sam said, and everyone turned to her.

“That pod is what caused this. Something  was inside it, something undetected. It wasn’t what the pod brought along.” Sam explained with a thoughtful face, her one arm across her stomach and the other one’s elbow resting on that arm, her fist on her mouth.

“Yeah? And how would you know?!” Captain demanded with an anger full face. She merely looked up at him.

“Because it was my skip that it brought along. That’s why I’m here. There was nothing on my skip that could’ve caused this, and even more proof that pod landed here a month ago. This apocalypse started a month ago. We just landed here an hour ago.” Sam explained.

“We? Who’s we?” The Doctor asked.

“Me and my companions. We’re 7 together. That’s my I’m panicking more than any of you.” Sam explained.

“Because of your friends getting infected?” Rose asked, as little confused.

“Well yeah, but it’s more complicated for me.” Sam turned her wrist and showed it to them.

“We’re all universally linked, meaning if one gets infected-.” Sam was cut off.

“Then the other 6 will also.” The Doctor said and Sam nodded.

“Their somewhere in this hospital. We lost each other when I followed that doctor. They have no idea about this situation and we’re standing in a hospital with hundreds of infected. Luckily, I trust them enough to be bonded with them and they are smart. They won’t touch them. It’s once these guys awake that I’m afraid.” Sam told them, trying hard not to panic. She didn’t want to join the apocalypse.

“It’s that ship. I’m positive. Whatever was in that ship is rewriting human DNA, and that’s another reason why I’m afraid. Me and my companions, not one of us are human. What will happen if we get infected?” Sam said, grinding her teeth together. She then exited the room before anyone could ask questions. The only thing in her mind was to find them. Find them before something bad happens. She threw open every door in search of them, each time she did so the patients would sit up before just laying down again. Once she reached about the 7th ward, all of the patients sat up, but not like before. All of them sat up, in each ward, every patient, and they were crying out for mummy. Sam backed up from the door, watching them rise to their feet. Then fear entered her mind as she felt it. A hand. On her neck. She whipped around and saw infected. Her hand was behind on her neck, a shudder down her spine.

“Are you my mummy?” All of the voices chanted. Sam took down her had from her neck and horror became clear. There was a scar on the back of her hand. Everything went dark then.

The familiar feeling of ground on her face was enough to calm her enough to think. The ground was damp, sticking to her face.

“Just this once Rose! Everybody lives!” She heard the voice of the Doctor, and that’s when she sat up. Her eyes had to adjust. She was surrounded by a crowd of confused looking people, citizens, locals. When she looked up she could see the Doctor smiling brightly, Rose matching his expression. Captain was nowhere to be seen. There was also a girl, hugging a small boy. The pod was still there, open. But that wasn’t all. She could see her companions standing behind the Doctor. She slowly stood up and stumbled over to them.

“What happened?” She asked them.

“Nanogenes! That’s what! The first victim had the gasmask and scrape so the Nanogenes thought that’s how humans were supposed to look  and spread with touch! But now they found the boy’s mother, a superior DNA and returned everyone to normal!” The Doctor said gladly.

“Along the way we also got your companions, we were surprised at first. Because you were the one who received the Nanogenes it couldn’t really be passed on through a link because it had to be physical touch. Which is good because who knows what would’ve happened if the Nanogenes turned them into what they though humans looked like.  Their entire biological structure would’ve been rewritten!” The Doctor exclaimed.

“And me?” Sam asked, feeling for her two hearts. Yup, still had them.

“Like I said the Nanogenes had to find a superior. Now we might not be the same DNA, we are the same race. They recognized me as older and that turned you back to normal as well. Isn’t it fantastic?” He said with a bright smile.

“How old are you then?” Sam questioned him.

“Uh, 900.” He answered.

“But then I’m older. I’m 940.” Sam told him with a frown. He looked back at her with an expression unreadable.

“I’m a lot older than 900, but I’m forgetting a lot of things recently.” He told her with a blank expression, silently so that only they could hear.

“I assume something happened then?” She asked and he just stared.

“Yeah. Something big.” He said and looked to the people who were getting back on their feet.

“Like what?” He turned back at her.

“Like a good man goes to war.” He explained.

“I’m the Soldier who missed the war.” She told him. He nodded.

“I know. Your companions told me. They also explained to me about how I keep forgetting you, and the Captain and Rose kept talking about you.”

“You didn’t forget me then?” She questioned.

“Oh no, I did. I completely forgot about you. But if 8 people said you existed, I just had to believe that, now didn’t I?” He retorted with a smile.

“You’re not going to ask about me being a Time lord?” He shook his head.

“They also explained that to me, and like you said. The Soldier who missed the war.” She smiled at him.

“Can I ask for a number?” She asked him.

“Nine.” He answered and she nodded.

“Alright then, better get going. My companions probably want a word.” She said and he laughed.

“Hope to remember you.” He said and she nodded, before walking over to her companions.

“You are an idiot.” Vincent immediately told her.

“Well sorry. I though you guys saw where I was going and followed me.” She groaned.

“We have a problem now.” Simon said, all looking at him.

“Like?”

“The TARDIS disguised itself as cellar doors in an alleyway. How many alleyways are there with cellar doors when it’s the time of bombing?” He asked and Sam groaned.

“We’re going to have to check each alleyway then!”

“Better get started then.”
