Chapter 6 - Let's be Sherlock
As they stepped into the market place, they were hit with all the loud sounds of the market place. Sam heard the TARDIS’s zip clothes as she examined her surroundings.
“Let’s go.” She said and turned left through the crowd, they followed. They had to manoeuvre their way through the crowd, careful not to lose each other. On the way through the crowd, Sam managed to get buy a world map and a smaller map of the city they were in. They exited the marketplace and found themselves on a street.
“Alright then. The newspaper gave out an address. If I can just find it.” Sam said, tracing her finger over the city map.
“There. It’s not far.” She said and turned in that direction, they followed.
“So what are we going to do exactly?” Owen questioned.
“We’re going to try and see the body, or at least find out what condition it is in and what happened to it. From there on I’m hoping I can identify the alien that did it.” Sam said, a little unsure. They turned down a street to see red tape surrounding the crime zone. Judoon stood around the area, keeping a look out. Sam carried on toward them, the others following, a little sceptical.
“Excuse me.” Sam said, poking a Judoon in its side. It turned to her.
“Kro do flo no to flo fo yo.” It said and Sam raised an eyebrow. Judoon apparently wasn’t translated by the TARDIS, luckily she understood it, seeing as they are the Shadow Proclamation, it’s important to be able to communicate with them.
“Sam.” She said slowly with a nod.
“So blo mo?” The Judoon asked and Sam frowned. He just repeated her name. She rolled her eyes and nodded.
“Yo plo tro · mob lo yo · flo no to flo ro.” It said and Sam nodded, turning to her confused companions.
“It said we may enter. It seems that we are the help they called for.” They nodded. The Judoon lift up the tape to let them through.
“You speak rhinoceros.” Toby said with a small chuckle.
“I speak everything.” She said before opened the door the murder victim’s house. She entered, seeing albinos standing around, trying to gather evidence.
“Who are they?” Roni whispered to her.
“Albinos, I don’t exactly know if their race has a real name. The Shadow Proclamation’s leader, Shadow Architect, is an Albino. They are somewhat intelligent. These Albinos are working for the Shadow Proclamation, but somewhere else that the Shadow Proclamation can access. Like the Police of Earth can get scientists and investigators to do what they cannot. Simple like that.” She said to them before walking up to an Albino, who was using a small device to scan for…stuff. Sam walked her hand behind her back, a straight back, her chin slightly up. She was pretending to be Sherlock, after all. Sam tapped the girl on the shoulder and she turned to Sam.
“I’m looking for the body.” Sam told her.
“You are Miss Sam?” She asked and Sam nodded.
“Upstairs.” She answered briefly and Sam nodded, thanking her before making her way up the stairs. On the top floor there was a small station set up with small devices that looked like jammy dodgers, but where metal and had a red button in the middle.
“What are those?” Toby questioned. Sam looked at him, the device in hand.
“The new form of disinfection.” She placed the device on the back of her neck. Her body glowed green before it vanished.
“As long as you keep it on, and for less than an hour, you’ll be as clean as your specie can get.” She said with a small hop. The companions hesitantly took the devices and did the same. Their bodies glowed as well before it vanished.
“Come on.” She said and entered the room. There were three Albinos in the room, working amongst themselves. It was a bed room, a plain old one that looked as if everything needed replacing, indicating the victim wasn’t very rich. The body was in the middle of the room, laying on its stomach. The back of its head was purple with an orange neck. The entire surface was made out of scales. It was a Hath, and like the Blowfish they were fishlike humanoids. Sam gave him one over look before frowning.
“No blood?” She asked the Albinos. One shook his head.
“None that we could see.” He answered.
“So you haven’t examined the body yet?” She asked and he nodded.
“We were told to wait after you finish.” He said and she nodded.
“Has anyone touched or moved the body?” They shook their heads.
“Alright then. I need gloves.” She said and exited the room again to the small station and got a white pair of medical gloves. She placed them on and went inside. The first thing she did was walk over to the head and let her fingers run over the scales. She then examined her fingers. They were wet.
“How long ago was he killed?” She asked as she stood up.
“An hour.” One answered.
“Is your newspaper really that fast then?” She asked, eyeing them.
“Um, we don’t live here.” One said, sceptical. Sam snorted and stood a little back, examining the body.
“What do we know so far?” Allen asked.
“Um, well, fish die if they dehydrate, yes, but they remain wet. This is a humanoid, so we can assume it’s a little bit different. If normal fish had a way to breathe in water, but their body was out of the water, would they survive?” She asked them.
“Um, I don’t know.” Owen answered and the rest shook their heads.
“Well, me neither but that’s almost like what the Hath do. See that tubes at the front where his mouth is, with the liquid? That’s how they breathe. It’s not normal water, of course, it’s something else that helps them. The difference between the Blowfish and the Hath is that tube. Blowfish don’t need it, but they can still dehydrate so they have to take constantly water. Hath don’t need to. That liquid is everything they need to survive. No food. And in that case they don’t need to take water.” She said.
“Okay, what does that have to do with anything you found out?” Roni questioned.
“Well then, why is his scales wet?” She asked silently, only for them to here.
“Has it rained here recently?” Sam asked the Albinos.
“No miss, last was two weeks ago.” One answered and Sam nodded.
“Now we need to see if there’s blood.” She said and they nodded. Vincent and Roni exited the room and also got cloves, Roni having a little trouble with the weird shape of Silences’ hands. They went back inside and to the body. They lifted it up and turned it over onto it’s back. Everyone came closer to examine it. It wore the normal military outfit they all wear. Sam bend down and helped search for any blood. Nothing. She huffed out.
“Alright then. No blood. No wound.” She said as she stood up, taking steps away from the body to examine it from afar.
“Now the question is, why would someone murder a Hath?” She asked, more to herself.
“If I can interrupt, miss.” An Albino said and Sam looked over at her.
“But it’s not just Hath, there have 12 murders up to now, and they’re all other species. Variables. The only connection they have is the strange way they were killed in. No wound, no blood. We did countless tests on them but we can’t find a cause of death.” She said and Sam nodded.
“Alright then. Thank you. If you find anything different, please tell me.” She said with a nod.
“Come along.” She said and exited the room. They all took off the disinfection devices and the gloves. Sam took three of the devices and stuffed them in her pocket for possible later use. They exited the house and down the street again.
“Where to now?” Toby asked.
“The other victim. There’s just one thing I need to check.” She said, starting to jog in the direction of the second house. When they reached it, Sam had to go through the same thing with the Judoon to get in. They stayed outside while Sam quickly entered, placed one of the devices there and a glove on, and went to the body. She placed her gloved hand on the body and then felt it. Wet. Sam then left after removing the device and gloves. They started walking in an unknown direction while figuring out.
“No blood, no wounds, and they’re most certainly dead. A Hath and a Silurian, but there’s variables. 12 murders. Their bodies were slightly wet.” She told them.
“Alright. But what does that have to do with anything?” Allen questioned.
“It’s been an hour since the one died, a little more the other. Their clothes were entirely dry, only their body was wet, and only a little, not enough to be visible. It’s been an hour or more in which they just laid there, and their still a little wet, but not from water. It takes about 2 hours for that texture to settle in, before that it’s just wet.” She explained.
“You know what it is?” Simon asked and Sam nodded.
“I think I do. Well, the bodies anyway. I don’t know who did it or why. But I’m almost 100% certain that those were Flesh.” Sam said with a nod.
“Flesh?” Roni questioned.
“It’s a living substance used to create absolute clones.” She explained.
“Clones?” Toby asked, uncertain.
“Yes. Meaning that whoever the murderer is doesn’t want anyone to find the bodies, because then they’re revealing practically who they are, in the way they kill. Well, it’s that or there is no body and they make bodies to throw them off trail.” Sam said with a nod.
“There’s a way to kill them with no body?” Toby asked, sceptical.
“Well yeah. Either they ate the entire body which seems more likely by bigger beasts and animals, but then the chances of them having and using Flesh is most unlikely. It could be the Weeping Angels, also unlikely, seeing as the Shadow Proclamation monitors anything about the victims so they would’ve noticed if the victims had been send to an earlier time stream, and I don’t think Weeping Angels would’ve been able to do that in such a crowded planet. Disintegration could be possible, but then it would be Daleks. Upgrading could’ve been done, but it’s the Cybermen. With all these scanners and the Shadow Proclamation, it can’t really have been them. And it seems unlikely. What would they have to gain? My thought is the Abzorbalovian.” She announced after explaining.
“The what?” Toby questioned.
“The Abzorbalovian. They absorb people into their own flesh and can impersonate them.” Sam suddenly stopped.
“If this Abzorbalovian was a smart one, which I doubt, but if it was it would most likely have absorbed 13 people.” Sam said, confusing them.
“There were only 12 bodies that he planted.” Owen said.
“Exactly. He most likely placed the 12 bodies there so that the Shadow Proclamation and others were thrown off trail, but he forgot about the 2 hours before settling. That was his mistake. But if he were to have absorbed a 13th and impersonate him, turn into that person, no one would really suspect him of anything then. He took the life of an innocent man and absorbed no more after the 13th. To others it would seem that nothing ever changed, seeing as they can also copy personalities and steal their memories.” Sam said, examining the people around.
“In that case he could’ve made himself totally disappear then.” Allen said, regretfully.
“Yeah. Or the obvious and simple one of leaving the planet, but the Shadow Proclamation would’ve found him, no doubt.” Sam said and sighed.
“Being Sherlock is hard work. I never had to think this much before.” Sam said and they chuckled at her.
“Now then, why would he need to absorb them?” Toby asked the not yet considered question. Sam bit her lip.
“Maybe he had to get away. Maybe he’s running. Ugh, I don’t know.” She groaned.
“You know, for a younger version you’re quite smart.” Sam turned around to see the one and only, Shadow Architect. She had about 10 Judoon at her sides, and she wore a beautiful black gown. Sam blinked and frowned.
“It was you who called me here?” Sam asked and she nodded.
“Yes. I needed someone to identify the specie of the killer, and everyone I assigned gave up. Although the message has gone wrong and arrived too early in your time spree, I’m glad you could still figure it out. I am grateful, Sam. For what you have done and what you have yet to do.” Sam nodded slowly.
“So that’s it? I don’t need to find him?” She shook her head.
“Of course not. Couldn’t ask that of you, yet. Now you can stay here and enjoy the loud and absurd marketing and trading streets.” She said in disgust, in which Sam giggled at.
“Or you can jump in that lovely TARDIS of yours with her your incredible companions and fly off.” She finished and nodded. She turned around and walked away, the Judoon following.
“Well, Face of Boe and the Shadow Proclamation. Something big is going to happen.” Sam nodded, agreeing.
“Come on, let’s go back. I’ve had enough of Sherlock for one day.”
