Chapter 11 - Cyborg Rights

Sam was running about the entire TARDIS, completely mad and dare I say ‘crazy’. All her companions simply stood and watch her, frequently telling her to calm down, she’s over-exaggerating. It was the night before the trial started. Lady Shadow frequently contacted Sam to explain more details to her, but there’s one detail that Sam never asked and Lady Shadow never mentioned. What do you wear to a Cyborg Rights trial? She was running back and forth between her room’s closet and the console unit to see if Lady Shadow hasn’t called her yet. Once when she ran by, Vincent grabbed her by the shoulders, annoyed with her actions.

“Sam! It’s doesn’t matter! Wear something normal! Wear your pyjamas they won’t care!” Vincent told her, furiously.

“Yeah, but what if there’s a certain colour that we all have to wear! What then?! What if I turn up with pink and we had to wear back!” She argued.

“Will you wear pink?” Vincent asked her. She shook her head.

“Of course not!” She argued.

“Then what’s the problem?!” She yelled as he shook her shoulders rapidly. Sam shook her head and pushed Vincent off.

“It’s not a normal trial! The entire planet is a building! There will be, maybe at least, a million people there!” She argued.

“Then how will they notice if one person comes in her pyjamas!” Vincent threw back at her.

“B-but what-!”

“No!” Vincent yelled at her and she sighed.

“Fine, fine! I will wear something...normal.” She said and threw her hands up in the air. She slowly walked to her room and placed out an outfit. Once she started to doubt the outfit, she simply looked away and exited her room.

“Fine. I won’t bother anymore.” She said and her companions let out a sigh in relief.

“Finally…” Toby said under his breath with an eye roll. There was a sudden flash from the console room and Sam pushed past them all and ran to the monitor.

“Lady Shadow! What do I have to wear?!” Sam demanded, not giving any change for some sort of greeting, other than her acknowledging Lady Shadow.

“Um, anything, it doesn’t matter.” Lady Shadow said, frowning a bit. Sam let out a sigh of relief.

“I have called to absolutely make sure you are coming tomorrow.” Lady Shadow said and Sam nodded.

“Of course. Wouldn’t miss it.” Sam said and the image faded. She stood up straight and turned to her companions.

“Told you.” Vincent spat and Sam smiled.

“You did.” Sam said with a nod.

“Now you should probably get some rest.” Owen said and Sam nodded.

“We all need to. Big day tomorrow.” Sam said, making her way to her bedroom as did the others. Sam tried to calm herself as she laid in bed, just wanting a relax and have a good night’s sleep.

She awoke the next morning, quite early in fact. She turned her head towards the TARDIS clock. The TARDIS clock is one that keeps up with time, even through all this time travel. It’s like a clock wired up to Sam and her companions’ time, that way they can keep up with their age through all this time travel. The time read 6:32 AM. In only 2 hours and 30 minutes, the trial would begin. Sam usually got up at 8AM, but she felt that was too late. 6:30 was too early, but she wouldn’t fall asleep any time soon, so she settled on starting her morning. After she took a shower, she got dressed into the outfit she decided on last night. It was a striper refined tank, consisting of white and a dark blue. Black denim shorts and high-top black converse sneakers. Her hair this morning was more than just orange but a bright yellow-orange as well. She styled it to her left side, her hair loose. She took her time doing all that, and once she looked it was 10 past 7. She exited her room to see Owen and Allen were the only ones really awake, the others just woke up. Owen and Allen were creating omelettes with ham, cheese and bacon.

“Early.” Allen commented once he saw Sam. She nodded.

“Excited.” She said with a smile.

“Excited? To go to a trial? That’s a first for me.” Vincent said as he entered, rubbing the back of his head. Sam rolled her eyes.

“Not what I meant.” She said, almost whispering. Owen handed her a plate and she thanked him. After they all ate they went to the console room to pilot.

“Nervous?” Toby questioned Sam. She shook her head.

“Not really. I just get to sit and listen.” Sam said with a shrug before she pulled the lever and they were off. The stepped out of the TARDIS to see the massive building which took about ¾ of the planet. The other quarter were hotels and guest houses for people who need to stay for the court, restaurants and places you’ll need for your stay, even a tourist station if you just want to see the planet, but that’s only if there isn’t any large cases, as like this one. And as far as Sam can remember, there’s even a nature site. In front of the large building were three large crowds. The one crowd were the 298 member planets and everyone who represented them. The second were the 39761 affiliated worlds and everyone who represented them. The third were the public, which was even bigger than the affiliated worlds crowd. The witnesses, lawyers and judges were already inside the building. Security was incredibly high around the entire building, consisting of Judoon and others. Court cases by the Shadow Proclamation is very different than Earth’s, Sam learned that the hard way last time. But now she was prepared. She turned to her companions, seeing the TARDIS behind them disguised as, once more, an arch way.

“You guys going in as the public, or are you going to explore outside?” She asked them.

“We’re going in.” Allen spoke for them. She scoffed.

“Good luck then. There’s only a certain number that can go in.” She said and they nodded before they departed to the crowds. Her companions to the public, and Sam to the member planets. The member planets were planets that followed the way of the Shadow Proclamation, as did Gallifrey. Gallifrey did have their own way of law, especially when they didn’t want other planets involved. But other cases they followed the Shadow Proclamation. Affiliated worlds were planets that were involved with the case, and if the case was held by the Shadow Proclamation then it’s always a large one. 39761 affiliated worlds were easy. The member planets and affiliated worlds made of the jury of peers. Although Sam wasn’t a part of the jury, she was still required to sit at the member planets as representative. In front of the large crowd of member planets was a man reading names and letting them through, making sure no one could sneak by with all the Judoon standing by his side, or that no one was absent. They read names and people entered, the crowd decreasing.

“Sam of Gallifrey?” Came her name and she walked forward, everyone staring at her in wonder. A Time Lord? Alive? That was which roamed all their thoughts as she entered. Two Judoon escorted her inside. At the front of the room were the seats for the judges, on the one side were all the seats for the jury, going up to the ceiling. On the other side were the public. The first row seats of the judges, jury and public were reached by a flight of stairs, about two metres from the ground. On the ground at the back of the room were the row seats for the witnesses. Against the walls around the witnesses were the seats for all the lawyers. Judoon and other security were at the doors, the base of the seats for the jury, public and judges. In the middle of all the seats was the questioning stand. The Judoon escorted her to the 218th row of seats where she sat at the end. Quite high, but defiantly not the highest. After all of the jury were seated inside, the public entered. Sam tried to search for her companions but then the 3 judges the entered. Everyone got to their feet and bowed in a polite manner before getting seated again. Sam looked around. The jury was made out of every alien imaginable that could possibly have something to do with Cyborgs. Except Cybermen and Daleks, of course, and any other races that were prohibited from having anything to do with this. Races that were considered enemies to the universe, as did Cybermen, Daleks, Weeping Angels, and others. The public were made out of everything as well, most looked like families. The witnesses were mostly Cyborgs, a few not that had something to say. The Judoon stood around the Cyborgs very closely, seeing as they were the victims here. The lawyers were also all races. Now the three judges. The main judge was a race that resembled human octopi very closely. They were humanoid, however, and they had 8 tentacles from the height of their chin down to their ankles, but the 8 tentacles were around their head. The main judge was purple in colour, her eyes a bright green that could be seen even as far as where Sam sat. All three judges wore their formal black robes, the man one’s tentacles over them. She was a specie called ‘Sekkiz’, from the planet of ‘Deniz’, a water planet. The other judge was a human, and the last was an ‘Ülvi’. Ülvi were a race of see through celestial beings. They had three large tendrils coming from their head as hair, the middle one larger. They could almost be called tentacles because of their shape. These tendrils reach their ankles, just like the Sekkiz’s tentacles, except that their see through in a celestial form. At the end of their tendrils, a little from the end, were large sphere beads. The beads differ from Ülvi to Ülvi, but hers was a lime green. Their eyes were a bright white with no pupil or iris. They were a very powerful race from the planet of Celhimmel, the planet of heaven and skies. Sam hasn’t been there before, but she imagined it as the  nameless planet of bond. Clear clouds they walk on, but with cities made of gold. The main judge took a file and started reading about all the cases where people complained about discrimination to the Cyborgs, or about how Cyborgs should be scrapped. After that, she started at the very beginning.

“To start this trial officially, we must look to the definition of ‘Cyborgs’. Lady Chinara, would you read from the ‘Universal Dictionary’ the meaning?” The main asked of the Ülvi. She nodded and stood up, one of the 26 Universal Dictionaries in her arms.

“Cyborg 1. A being who had certain physiological processes aided or controlled by mechanical or electronic devices.  Cyborg 2. A living being whose powers are enhanced by computer implants or mechanical body parts. Cyborg 3. A person whose physiological functioning is enhanced by mechanical or electronic devices. Cyborg 4. A fictional or hypothetical person whose physical abilities are extended beyond normal limitations by mechanical elements built into the body.” She said before sitting down again.

“No matter how many meanings we may read, from any planet of every universe, it’ll stay the same in one definition. A normal race enhanced by mechanical parts.” The main said before pausing, scanning over the faces.

“Before we move on to the next stage of the trial, would there be any questions or extra definition we can discuss about.” A few hands raised. This is one of the differences between Earth courts and Universal courts. Discussion is one of the main components where everyone can have a say and will be taken into account. That’s why these trials usually last for more than a year, maybe even 5.

“We shall begin by the jury. Row 7, Bino of the late Alpha-B10.” The main addressed. Bino stood up.

“Thank you, Milady. I’m sure a few heads are wondering about this, but would Cybermen be considered Cyborgs then?” He asked and everyone went into discussion amongst themselves. The judges waited for someone to raise their hand to discuss amongst all. Another jury member raised their hand and everyone went silent.

“Pollysi from Benovseyi Sulari.” The main addressed and she stood up.

“Definition also crosses some planets in the universe as there is a limit to how much a being can be enhanced before it is considered a robot. 76,3%, if I am correct. Another definition clearly states a brain, heart, and emotions make up Cyborgs. Cybermen have, of those three, only a brain. The possibility of Cybermen upgrading to the point of not even needing a brain is more likely than not.” She explained and Sam nodded, agreeing with the definition but not that Cybermen were to be considered robots. As she told Simon at an earlier stage on Alpha-Z9, Cybermen had their own category. As did the Daleks. Daleks are begins ripped of emotions inside a robot. They weren’t enhanced and they weren’t converted. She saw the first part of the trial more to separating Cyborgs and Robots. A few protests of outrage were called, while overall more agreed.

“Those definitions are also greatly considered, yes. The court will now go into discussion about the first definition. There is a limit to how much a being can be enhanced before it is considered to be a robot.” The main said and everyone started shouting their thoughts. It wasn’t even an hour in and arguments were going all around. Sam could spot the scared looks on the Cyborgs on the witness seats, as well as the hateful glares in their way. Sam sighed and shook her head at the many wrong doing people. Sam hated robots, but Cyborgs can’t be hated on. It’s like if you lose an arm and get a mechanical prosthetic one like the newest versions. The newest versions can only be mechanical, for it connects with the nerve system and does what non-mechanical ones cannot. Then their considered to be a Cyborg. How can that be bad? Maybe there’s even a minimum to how much a person can be enhanced to be considered a Cyborg. Maybe 33,3%? Before Sam could even roll her eyes at the arguing court, it was 4PM. The time the court closed. Her eyes went wide as people started to leave. She waited until all the jury where down the stairs before getting up. The judges and she was the only one left in the room, and of course the silent Judoon and security. She descended down stairs and to the door where she was noticed.

“Sam of Gallifrey?” She heard and turned to see it was the male human judge who had addressed her.

“Yes sir?” She said, addressing him formerly as should in court.

“You are here as only representative?” He asked and she nodded.

“For Gallifrey, yes.” Sam said.

“I must say, I never expected to see another Time Lord in my life time after they all burned. I was quite surprised to see your name on the member planets when I read it.” The main judge said.

“I am only here for today. I might join in later states.” Sam said with a nod.

“Well then, do you have any insight in which wasn’t named today?” The Ülvi questioned.

“Well, yes, in a way, but their my opinion really.” Sam said.

“Please share then.” The male said.

“Alright then. I feel that Cybermen aren’t considered Cyborg or Robots, they have their own category, as do the Daleks. I feel that there is a limit to being enhanced and be still be considered a Cyborg, but I feel they’re not in numbers. If the Cyborg has still a heart, a brain, and emotions, it’s a Cyborg. If not, even one, it’s Robot. I also feel that there is a minimum to how much is enhanced before being considered a Cyborg, and this in number. I feel it is 1/3, otherwise it could only be prosthetics, which I don’t feel is a Cyborg. I personally hate Robots, but why people hate on Cyborgs I don’t understand.” The main judge nodded at her.

“Your insight is understandable. Ae you sure you won’t be joining us again?” Sam shrugged.

“Lady Shadow Architect only asked of me to be here as representative the first day, and only as listener as I so wished. As I said, I might be joining again, but at a much later stage, where rights are chosen.” Sam said with a nod.

“You believe Cyborgs will prevail?” The Ülvi questioned. She nodded.

“I do.” She said with a smile.

“Now I will be taking my leave.” Sam said, bowing slightly in politeness before leaving. Outside the building, amongst the large crowds, stood her companions.

“That went…well?” Owen asked, sceptical. Sam nodded.

“Yes. Now let’s leave, before someone gets me to do something else.” Sam said and they nodded, going back to the TARDIS.
