Accident (10)

Andrew was a very unlucky human.

His life hadn't been great. He still had a lot of time to start anew, though. Or so he thought.

After getting discharged from the hospital, Lydia and he went to her car parked in the nearby parking lot.

When they hopped in it, Andrew didn't hesitate to fasten his seatbelt because of his history of misfortune.

Lydia started the car and hit the gas. Once on the road, the teen took his time looking at the scenery in awe.

The city was entirely different from the town he had lived at. Well, not exactly. He had stayed at a big old house in the woods near the town, actually.

His mother was paranoid about something terrible happening to her family, so she took it upon herself to protect them from every living being that might be seen as dangerous.

That, of course, didn't stop the adventurous rebels known as Andrew and Luca, as they regularly visited the town at night when the others were sleeping.

There, they'd meet up with some friends and Andrew's boyfriend, Elliott. It would have been great for it to continue being that way if Elliott hadn't been Luca's drug dealer.

Oh well, things were shitty like that. Andrew had gotten used to it somehow.

Now looking back, he saw the red flags – the way Elliott would spend time with him only after Luca got his fix, or how Luca's mood would go sour after a night of not bothering to go out.

There were so many wrong things, but nobody had noticed them on time.

Andrew sighed. He had to stop this depressing train of thought.

He turned his attention back to Lydia. She was talking nonstop, without even taking a pause to breathe, about all the opportunities for a better life he could find while he was under her care.

It was kind of comforting to know somebody still cared about his sorry ass.

His eyes caught the sight of something not quite right. There was a car moving towards them. And it was on the wrong side of the street.

Andrew's heart drummed against his chest, his breath coming out as short panicked huffs.

With wide fearful eyes, he looked at Lydia, but the lady didn't seem to see the extremely fast car coming their way.

He opened his mouth. No words came out, just a strangled whine. It caught Lydia's attention and she went to ask what it was all about when suddenly the car crashed.

The previously moving vehicle was right in their faces. Pressed between it and the car seat, they were stuck.

There was shattered glass everywhere. Andrew's seatbelt was too tight around his throat and it managed to strangle the poor boy.

He was feeling light-headed and dizzy. His eyes unfocused as there were some strangely coloured lights coming out of nowhere.

His ears were ringing loudly. He had a major déjà vu with that one time he passed out. Although, only this time he knew he wouldn't wake up again.

He wouldn't say goodbye to his ungrateful parents, his disloyal friends and cowardly boyfriend.

Soon enough, the ringing stopped. There was a defeating silence and once more he was soaking in darkness.

The last thing on his mind was the lullaby his brother would sing to him to sleep when they were younger:

He is a devil in disguise –
You can see it in his eyes,

Hiding the last bit of light,
Lonely in the moonless night.

The boy lost all his hope
And no longer could he cope

With the endless darkness
His one and only weakness.

Sacrifice was to be made
With a price to be paid.

Looking down at the river,
He felt himself shiver

At the emotionless facade
Of the shadows that clawed

At his restless soul
For it was foul...

And down the river he goes
To escape all of his foes.
