Chapter 3
Andres bit down on the humiliating pain he put his hand through as he led Sofia to the kitchen.
"Tia Julieta, I broke my -"
Damien stood at the stove, Camilo on the counter next to him.
"Hello Papa, Padre."
"Andres, what'd you break?"
"Oh, nothing. I'm fine. Faye asked me to get her an arepa, are there any left?"
"I think so. Give me one sec, amore."
Damien rifled through a cabinet and handed Andres an arepa.
"Thank you Padre."
Camilo smiled at his youngest and husband, then noticed Sofia.
"Andres, who's your new friend?"
"Hello, my name is Sofia! It's so great to finally meet you!"
"Sofia..."
Damien's smiled grew strained as he gave her a little glass of rose milk.
"My mama was named Sofia."
"Was she nice?"
"She was a right hag to the bitter end. Best damn mother I could've hoped for."
Camilo threw a pebble at Damien's.
"No cursing in front of children."
"Thank you Papa, we'll be going now."
Andres quickly, and gently, pushed Sofia out of the room, nibbling on the cheesy treat. Sighing in relief as his hand was snapped back into place, the purpley color vanishing completely.
"Your Papa's family are Witches?"
"No, I'll explain it later. Do you want to meet my other Tias and Tios?"
"Maybe some other time. I want to see your room."
Andres shrugged his shoulders, proceeding to lead her to his room. The room he forgot he basically destroyed the night prior. Unlocking and opening his door, mortification almost killed him.
"Dios, I'm so sorry! I forgot to clean."
Sofia shushed him with pat on his chest.
"Don't worry so much, this is a perfect opportunity to test my magic. Stand back, Neito."
Andres did so, quickly. Sofia's eyes glowed white as every possession in the room was fixed and back in it's usual spot. Andres, while extremely impressed, masked it by letting Mateo out of his shirt pocket, into his own little space in the wall.
Sofia fawned over everything in the room, particularly the fireplace. The armchair in front of the fireplace was turned into a mahogany rocking chair with a blue and white quilt. Andres sat on own favorite, mint green armchair while Sofia sat in her new rocking chair.
"Neito, your room is beautiful. If I remember right, you said you were a witch? I wasn't with the Witch's of Old, so I didn't see your ceremony. May I see the memory?"
"Sure, but don't expect anything grand."
Andres kneeled on the floor, feeling the slight uncomfortableness of Sofia's fingers pushing past his human flesh and bones, into the heart of his Core. After a few minutes, of holding completely still, Sofia retracted her fingers with a big smile on her face.
"Fire and Nature? That's almost an unheard of pairing."
"Is it bad?"
"Not at all. It shows that you're balanced. Magic always has it's opposites. Witches and Fae, Electricity and Water, Fire and Nature, Snow and Earth; there cannot be one without the other. The fact you got Fire and Nature, to me, means you'll perform some extraordinary magic. Where's your staff, if you don't mind me asking?"
"I'll go get it."
Andres got up, going to the closed curtains next to his small, twin sized bed. Opening them, the damned staff stood there, just as beautiful and anger inducing before it was destroyed.
"Here you go Granny."
Sofia took the staff, rolling it carefully in her hands, frowning deeply.
"Andres, Neito. Have you ever done magic with this staff?"
"No. After Tia Mirabel gave it to me after training, I stopped using magic completely. My Nature Affinity upset Tia Isabella."
"Good. This staff has an enchantment to restrict the magic of the one uses it."
"What?"
Andres couldn't help the shocked hurt that bleed into his voice. His Tia put an enchantment on a staff, made especially for him, to limit his magical output?
"It's a good thing you never used it. To restrain a Witch's magic could destroy their magical core, sending into an irreversible magic coma."
"I didn't know that..."
"What do you know about magic dear?"
"I never told her about my Fire Affinity, so I learned how to make plants and make medicine from plants."
"Nothing else? Dios mio, my poor grandbaby. You hardly know a thing about magic."
Sofia grew more and more angry. She smashed the staff against the wall. Her eyes glowed bright blue as her small, seven year old body was engulfed in a bright white light. A middle aged woman, wearing a tacky dark purple and bright green dress stepped out of the light. She snapped her fingers and a beautiful ivory staff, branching into different parts at the top with beautiful gemstones hanging from the branches, ending it a sharp, tapered point flew into her hand.
She stormed out of Andres's room, the small fifteen year old hot on her heels.
"Damien Sylvester Calderis! Get your sorry ass out here now!"
Andres flinched as every person in Casita ran out to the main room. Faye, Cadence, and Isabella were outside Isabella's room. Antonio, Alejandro, Azule, Damien, and Camilo were outside the kitchen. Mirabel, Valeria, and Bruno II were by the front door. Pepa and Felix were outside their door.
Mirabel, Valeria, Azule, and Damien all had their staffs on hand, ready to attack.
"Who are you? Andres, get over here, now."
"Padre, no, it's fine! Everything's fine!Everyone calm down! There's no need to make this make fuss Granny! I'm fine, you're fine, the Encanto's fine! Everything is perfectly fine!"
"Everything is not fine! That staff could've killed you!"
Andres flinched. He didn't know what to do. He breathing became sporadic, his heart racing. As Andres went into a full blown panic attack, muttering everything's fine, over and over to himself, Sofia went off, shielding Andres with a soundproof barrier.
"I raised you better than this Damien! And Valeria, how could you let this happen?! The staff my poor Nieto had a Magical Extraction curse on it! If I hadn't recognized the damn curse when I did, Andres would've been killed!"
"Mama?"
"No shit! I'm only three years into my new life, and that maldita perra tried killing my Neito! And you didn't notice?! What kind of father are you?! I looked into his memories to see his Affinity Ceremony, I saw him look the happiest he's ever been getting his affinities. Then I saw the memory of his birthday yesterday!"
"We had a great party with everyone included!"
"Andres was in the bathroom! He ran out of this house in tears when you regard those two brats as your "twins"! You ought to be ashamed for outright forgetting your youngest child! Well you don't have to worry about him anymore. I'm leaving this wretched place, and taking my Nieto with me."
Sofia took immediate notice to the blood trickling down Andres scalp, from his nails digging into it and pulling out his hair. His mantra has not yet ended. Sofia whispered a temporary sleeping charm on him. After he was unconscious and picking up his, far too scrawny body, Sofia turned to Damien, with the most venomous glare he's ever seen.
"I revoke your claim to the Calderis Coven."
With a graceful wave of her hand, the thick black ring that encircled his Witch's Symbol was yanked painfully from his hand. The ring vanished painlessly from her eldest grandchild.
Sofia summoned a Pearl Looking Glass into her hand, immediately going through to her best friend, Sasha's house. Once through, startling the young twenty-five year old Witch, Sofia smashed the pearl connecting Damien's mirror to Sasha's was destroyed.
Laying Andres on Sasha's armchair, Sofia snatched up a cold whiskey Sasha poured for her, downing it and refilling instantaneously.
"I take it the family reunion didn't go well."
"Worse than you could ever know. This is my youngest Nieto, Andres."
"He looks so sweet. I haven't seen him, his sisters, or little Zule since he was my nappies still. What happened? You wouldn't break one of my hard earned pearls for no good reason."
"Tomorrow. Right now, we need a proper room for my sweet Nieto while also putting up wards against Damien, Valeria, Mirabel Madrigal, Selkie, and Pandora."
