Words Part 2

Guys I lied, I never edited the last non-story chapter. However, I have even more notes!
You know what notes means: I reached the end of the third book, we are now entering endgame territory!
Shit is about to hit the fan.

Anyway, as always, I have more notes to share, and you're welcome to skip this chapter.
It won't be as much as the last one, anyway!

Here is the current list of deities I've come up with at the moment as well as the animals associated with them; they can take the form of these animals as well as mix and match parts together. They tend to combine more often than not because deities are not ever thinking and feeling in one solid form. So when they achieve a solid state, AKA obtain a Voice, they tend to develop forms that combine it all.
Also I added their associated colors, and it's very likely that most of these deities will not be appearing in Andlátkyn.

Anyway, I decided to share a small drabble that may or may not be canon to the future of Andlátkyn, so be warned for potential spoilers! This at the very least, takes place years after the Empire's fall and outside of Alagaësia!

"Sphinx of black Quartz, judge my vow."
The man's voice echoed into the black cave, his lone lantern illuminating the cold, gleaming crystals that coated the rock in geometric facets.
He stood in confidence, boots crunching against the glass-like gravel below him, fragments of quartz ground by ages of older footsteps, predecessors who dared enter the cave of the ancient god from before time.

Then it appeared: a faint blue glow pulsing from the depths of the cavern, crystals glittering in the azure glow. The light grew closer and closer, eventually materializing into blue threads of light that crawled along the walls like serpents; like chords of arachne magic, they eventually passed him and wove a web of blue behind him, blocking his exit.

".. Sphinx..?" He dared murmur in fear, his low voice bouncing off the walls and echoing far louder than he intended. A soft reply answered back, containing an eerie, unnatural quality to it that he could not identify, yet spoken in a voice as deep as the cave itself, as gravelly as the ground beneath his feet and full of the same dark beauty as the black gems coating the walls.
"Come. You ask a favor of me in the form of judgement, so I ask a favor of my own in return. Come."

A pulse of light flashed from the strings from the depths, traveling up in a wave until the threads all shone more than bright enough to light the path. One string reached down and wound around the handle of his lantern, tugging it upward and to the ceiling, where it hung just out of reach.

His way out blocked and only light taken, the man had no choice but to go forward, footsteps crunching loudly against the sharp gravel as he followed the ethereal glow.

The deeper into the cave he travelled, the less black the gems around him were, shifting into faint motes of color, darkness remaining a smoky wisp within the gems until they were translucent, revealing the mat of charcoal stone they were embedded in.

And yet, further still he journeyed, until the glassy quartz began to reflect motes of color, tinged blue by the strings woven between the crystals like water flowed through stones in a river. This went on until the gems gleamed in a cold rainbow beneath the earth, untouched by the sun, illuminated solely by the watery light of the strings. The air held a certain chill that was completely opposite to the scorching desert sands of Aridia outside, somewhere beyond the cave walls.

Then without warning, the walls opened up, revealing a wide, glittering cavern that rose high above him, the ceiling full of stony spires of rock and jutting white crystal, a dense web of strings woven between them all like a giant spider had made it's den in a cold, dark cave deep below the earth.

The man was afraid. Little indeed was known about the Sphinx, so little that none could say what indeed sort of creature it even was, let alone what it did.
Perhaps it was a great spider of magic, eating all who entered it's chambers.
Or at least, all who failed to pass its judgement.

These were the frightful thoughts darting through his mind as a dark shape emerged from the web above, descending on a single strand that lowered them to the ground.

He could tell nothing about the figure, only that the strange one was tall, incredibly so, and hidden by a black cloak, the ends of the sleeves gleaming the same watery glow as the strings, as did the bottom hem of the cloak itself.

The human tensed as the figure slowly began to approach, face hidden in the shadows of their hood. Faint waves of brighter light slowly rippled through the room, traveling the lengths of the threads all around them.
The man knelt down and shot a prayer to whatever gods would protect him.

"Do I frighten you?" Came the sudden question, spoken in the same deep, almost majestic voice from before, the strange notes beneath it making it impossible to ignore.

The man looked up from where he knelt, unable to utter a word as he stared into the darkness beneath the hood. He could have sworn there was a faint red glow within. The figure- who indeed was the owner of the voice and clearly the mysterious Sphinx of black Quartz- sighed.

They lifted one arm, waving it across the room vaguely, where a wave of white light erupted from select crystals within the walls and ceiling, predominantly white as the brightness overpowered the dim glow of the numerous strings woven throughout the cavern.

The gems left unlit merely reflected the light in shards of color, bringing the cave to life, where it became apparent that this place did not entirely belong in the land of mortals, hidden away from the races by the unbearable desert that stretched all around this lone cave for leagues and leagues in every direction.

"What is this place, oh Sphinx?" He asked in reverence. The other's hood collapsed onto his shoulders, revealing a skull as black as the walls beneath the gems, a pair of glowing red eyesockets, yellow teeth and mismatched eyelights of yellow, blue and white. Lines of blue striped his cheekbones, the same color as the strings all around them and glowing the same vibrant hue.

The skeleton spoke kindly, though his face revealed a weariness of an ancient being.
"This is a place between realms. You could say it is the gate between the dimensions, but it is also the anchor between this realm and the one between us and the rest. I only protect it from those with dark intentions."
"...But who.. who are you, my Lord?"

The skeleton peered at him, a faint smile upon his unnaturally bright yellow teeth.
"Is the Sphinx of black Quartz not enough?"
"I apologize, it is not my place to ask." The man dipped his head in solemn subservience. A light chuckle emanated from the strange skeleton.
"Of course you can ask. That title was given to me by someone who wanted to keep my identity a secret from my enemies."

"You have enemies?"
"I do. One doesn't become somebody without gaining an enemy or two from it. And I.. have plenty who believe I should be dead, dead and gone. The only issue with that belief is that there is nothing that can kill me in any meaningful way."

"My Lord.. are you perhaps a god?" The man dared ask, cringing as soon as the words left him. The other smiled, a look both mournful yet fond.
"I am." He murmured, as though reminiscing on bittersweet memories.
"A god of what, your Holiness?"

The skeleton scoffed, turning away at the title as he faced the distant wall, strings swinging in an unknown breeze high above them.
"Please, don't give me those names. I never liked them. I am Error, the god of Destruction- or, as your people liked to call me, the Deathweaver with the strings of Mercy. I am the end of ends. I am the antithesis of creation, the death of existence. I protect this hub between realms because I am tired. I have lived far longer than you could possibly imagine. And yes, I have enemies. Many, many enemies. So I've retired to this cave that has gone forgotten since its creation, to be he who judges those who can make the journey through the sands to find a small stone outcropping that refuses to be buried by the dunes. I've retired to the title Sphinx of black Quartz so that those who would remember Destruction wouldn't think it could be found here. Does that answer your question?"

"Yes. Yes it does, O Deathweaver."

Again, might not ever be a thing in the future. But I wanted to include it, as it's been sitting around for a while.

But hey, unrelated, but I have themes for people and groups!
So I'm putting down the notes for you guys to enjoy!

All of these songs tend to have scenes associated with them, and if I don't forget to add them later or add them in the scenes I have planned, then most of these will be making it into Andlátkyn!
Can you guess what's happening in most of them? The music is telling a story.
