Pastries
((A/N)
Dude.
69. Nice.
Originally this was going to be part of a whole chapter involving the Agaetí Blödhren, but then it just kept stretching- now, even with the huge chapters I write, it still needs to be split! Jesus Christ it's huge!
So here's the first half that's now it's own chapter- Wow I know how to write long chapters...)
Dream knocked softly on the door, Nightmare standing beside him with half-lidded sockets. The door opened to reveal Eragon, smiling at the sight of them. "Blue's trying to cook at the moment."
They both chuckled. "Only trying to cook?" "No overwhelming multitasking?" They spoke in turn before Nightmare leaned on the doorframe, tentacles flicking humorously.
"And study while working on a side project of his own." Eragon admitted.
"Oh thank goodness, I was worried he'd been replaced with a stranger." Dream joked as Nightmare rolled his eyelights. "And how have you fared this fine day?" He quested overdramatically, empathizing eloquence in a mockery of the respectful greeting. Eragon snorted and raised his hands, sleeves rolled up as he revealed ink stains flecked on his skin. "I've finished my addition for the Blood-Oath Celebration minutes ago."
"You've been writing?" Dream asked curiously.
"I have." Eragon clarified. "Would you like to see it?"
"Of course." Both Twins responded unanimously.
The human stepped aside to let them in, shaking his head. "You two hardly act like separate consciousnesses. I'm saying this as someone linked with another already."
"We have just enough separation." Nightmare responded amiably, stepping through first and silently holding a tendril in front of Dream's feet. The lighter shot him a look before stepping over it, only for the limb to swipe his legs out from under him. The God of Positivity landed on the floor with a thud. "Ow!"
"Just enough to tease each other."
"Nightmare-!"
The darker quickly paced out of the reach of the vines, chuckling all the while. Eragon grinned, helping Dream back up as the twin glared at his brother. "I'm going to get you for that! You coconut."
Nightmare raised a non-existent eyebrow at that. "I'm a what, now?"
Dream drew himself up confidently. "A coconut. You're a coconut because-" He teleported in front of him and poked him in the sternum with his next words. "You. Have. Such. A. Thick. Skull."
There was a moment of silence as Dream seemed to reflect on what he just said.
Then everyone burst out laughing, Blue showing up at the bottom of the stairs as he facepalmed, giggling maniacally as Eragon leaned on the wall and wheezed. Nightmare just lowered himself to the floor and cried, incoherent as Dream turned and threw himself on the bed in the room, shoulders shaking as he hid his spastic chuckles.
Eventually they recovered, Blue snickering as he tended to something in the fire and teleported something to his other hand, a scroll that he began reading. His icy eyelights drifted from the parchment over to the Twins that had yet to move from their places. "Eragon, I think they're broken."
Nightmare sat up, regarding him with a grin as Eragon furrowed his brows. "Broken?"
Blue tossed the scroll over his shoulder, his magic rolling it back up before teleporting it elsewhere as he approached Dream and poked the prone figure. "Well, I guess not Nightmare, but this one is definitely broken. Look at him." He prodded a leaf with a bone attack, smirking.
Nightmare snorted, standing up as he waved a hand lazily. "He'll recover." He sniffed the air, moving across the room and picking up a bowl of grapes. "I see you've left suitable offerings."
"Blue insisted we leave that alone, actually." Eragon explained.
"That's because I saw them coming a mile away. And I know how you feel about grapes."
The Guardian of Negativity grinned as Eragon went upstairs.
"Did you leave any gooseberries?"
Dream's skull shot up and he was suddenly staring at them. "Inca berries?"
Blue scowled at the darker. "You had to bring them up." Dream leapt off the mattress. "They're my favorite!" He whined, before his wings unwound and vines spread out across the floor, the God of Positivity crawling over and then climbing up on Blue. "I'm suffering here!" He sobbed, clinging to the other.
"Can you let go?" Blue deadpanned at him.
"Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh…" He cried, but his phalanges loosened and he fell back to the floor. "Whyyyy."
Blue snickered, sidestepping him and looping around the room, passing Nightmare and plucking a grape from his bowl before rounding back to the fireplace. Nightmare was aghast, staring at the skeleton in bewilderment over the blatant thievery. "How dare you."
He just grinned, popping it in his mouth as his eyelights challenged the god. Nightmare just deadpanned in response.
"I am solidly affronted."
"I pity your wounded pride." Dream stated from the floor. "I miss inca berries."
"It's a shame really, both of you moping. I was making strawberry puff pastries."
Both Twins perked up. Eragon even came downstairs, having changed into a clean tunic.
"You've been baking so much, lately." Nightmare commented.
"Whatever happened to tacos?" Dream added.
Blue scoffed. "Wait till we leave Du Weldenvarden. Then you'll endure my taco extravaganza once again."
"Oh, the horror." Guardian of Negativity chuckled, lifting a grape to peer at it critically. Dream glared at him and he smirked at his other half.
"Speaking of which, I haven't seen Horror lately. How has he been?" Blue prompted as he lifted sweets into the air via magic, opening the door as he grabbed plates.
"Well!" Dream chirped. "We've found him spending most of his time over by the cliffs of Tel'naeír, along with Dust, Killer, and sometimes Reaper as they work on their projects to present during the celebration later this week."
"I think Horror's got quite the sizable project." Nightmare grinned knowingly.
Eragon leaned against the wall, having kept quiet this whole time. Blue stared at Nightmare for a long moment, then sighed, smiling as he shook his skull. "Alright, keep your secrets." He then headed out the door and made his way towards the dining room. "You all coming?" He called.
Bird suddenly appeared at the window, landing inside and stiffening at the sight of the Twins as they paused.
"In here, Bird!" Blue called before anyone could say anything, managing to recognize him from two rooms over.
"How did..?" Bird trailed, eyeing them.
"He has much better sight since his accident." Eragon explained vaguely, not knowing much himself.
"Good enough to see through walls?" The winged Sans countered.
Blue showed back up at the doorway, grinning. "Yes."
He waved them over. "Strawberry puffs if you want. GB! Are you coming down?" He raised his voice while peering through the ceiling. The skeleblaster appeared beside him, in his skeleton form with his hands in his hoodie pockets. His sockets were half closed. "I think the kiddos are happy." He murmured, static tones fizzling as he spoke.
".. Kiddos?"
"Bird, has no one told you?" Dream asked him as a blush colored GB's cheekbones. The skeleblaster hurried into the next room as Blue and Eragon followed, presumably to make sure he didn't eat everything before anyone else could.
"Told me what?" Bird questioned, wings tense as he regarded them.
"I thought Draco would have told you, you're his friend."
"He's been kinda distant lately." Bird admitted, looking away.
Dream blinked. "Oh. I'm sorry."
"It's fine." Bird said quickly. "He's kinda busy with the other dragon. And crushing on GB.." His voice dropped to a quiet murmur with the last sentence.
"Well we have news for you." Nightmare spoke lightly, coming up behind him and ushering him forward. Bird jumped slightly, dancing away from him before cringing at his own skittishness.
The darker one merely chuckled, Dream falling in step beside him as they both headed to the next room. "Draco and GB have been together for a month already." He lifted his voice so everyone could hear him as they entered the dining area.
GB blushed deeply. "It felt kinda rushed, actually.." He explained awkwardly.
"I don't see how." Dream countered. "Before any of us ended up here, you'd been visiting Draco's AU for years, you and your Papyrus."
Everyone paused what they were doing and looked at him.
"What?"
"How did you know that?" GB spluttered, turning shades of blue rarely seen in nature.
"Well, after council meetings I noticed you two chatting often when he came to them. Normally he'd go back home with you following. At first I thought it was only because you were related to dragons and had a dragonish form to go with it and he was helping you understand it, but then I thought you might have started dating, too."
GB glanced to the side, then rested his hands on the table.
"Actually, we did try it out a couple of times, but not only was I kinda just idolizing him then, but both of us were really stressed over our AU's Resets. We weren't mentally cut out for it at the time. However, our bros had a fling for a few months on and off before they decided to wait a little while to see if they really wanted to be together or not…. So I guess not a lot is hugely different between us, just no fear of Resets and I'm not really in that worship him phase." He chuckled to himself at the end, having spoken in Wingdings and mentally for Eragon's sake as a human incapable of understanding the skeleton ancestral language.
"Wait, how could your brothers hold a relationship in spite of the Resets? I thought they wiped everyone's memories but the one to do it and the Sans of that world." Eragon queried.
"Oh yeah, he knows about that." Bird muttered as Blue spoke up. "There are a few outliers and unusual circumstances that lead to some others knowing of them as well, it mostly depends on the AU. Like my own, for example. Technically, I qualify as a Papyrus because of my role as a Swap." "The Swap." Bird corrected. Blue nodded and continued. "The Swap. But, my brother is Papyrus with the role as Judge. So that leads to us both knowing about the Resets. However, I never told my Papy that I knew. Honestly, I never really told anyone anything until I got to know Nightmare and his team."
"That's when you broke down because of how your brother had been coddling you." Nightmare stated. Blue sighed, straightening a plate on the table. "I'm not very proud of that. But I am grateful. I don't think I ever would have become friends with all of you otherwise." He smiled at the darker, who returned the expression.
The company all seated themselves around the table. They started reaching for the pastries.
"Oh- Eragon." Blue seemed to recall something as the human held one of the treats to his mouth. "You may want to check them, I used lantana berries with blueberries in some of the others."
"Oh really?" Bird asked. "I've been meaning to try those, heard they're good but the elves don't seem to cook with them or something." He grabbed one of the puffs, wings stretching out behind him for a moment as he did so. "Why's it important to him?"
"Lantanas are poisonous to humans." Blue explained with a snort.
Bird's eagle eyelights flicked over to the human, who was biting into the pastry regardless. "Uh. You're still eating it." There was a pause as Eragon grinned slightly before clearing his throat. "We've been learning spells to counteract poisons."
"And I must say, I really suck at finding toxins." Blue joked.
Oof. GB added as he crammed another in his mouth, earning a scowl from his friend as he spilt crumbs.
"Have you gotten sick from them..?" Bird questioned warily, then cautiously biting into the sweet tart treat. Blue shrugged. "A little. There's either very little in this world that actually poisons skeletons or my own increased immunity has worked out in my favor. If anything, I've done my best to make up for that by memorizing how to eliminate the side effects so Eragon doesn't get so sick. Especially seithr oil." He blanked out for a moment, staring at the wall. "That's the poison that killed Brom."
Silence.
"Well." Dream spoke up suddenly, shattering the tension in the room. "There's nothing like the stuff you cook, Blue. I don't think there's a single cook out there that can quite compare to what you make."
Blue seemed to come back to earth. "Oh of course. Even if it's not the best, I always pour my Soul into my fantastic creations! So long as they have purpose and bring joy without causing clutter." He smiled, holding up one of the pastries. "But thank you. I always make nothing short of magnificent." He beamed, looking like his old cheery self. Dream glowed in response, a huge grin on his face.
"So Eragon," Nightmare changed the subject. "You said you had written something that you wanted to show us."
"Oh, indeed I have. You want to see it now?" The human asked.
Tentacles flicked as Dream set down his puff and answered. "Of course!"
"Well then, if you'll excuse me…."
