Destiny

(Oh, I've got a fun chapter in store for you all.~)

He sighed, leaning against the railing as he watched the evening sun approaching the horizon, painting the sky in peach orange.

ꔋ௦𝚋ʏ.. ᥕ𝚑𝚎ⲅ𝚎 𝚊ⲅ𝚎 ʏ௦υ. He wondered blearily, tired.
ꔋ𝚑𝚎ⲅ𝚎'ಽ ௦ᥒ⎝ʏ ಽ௦ ოυϲ𝚑 𝚊 𝚐υʏ ϲ𝚊ᥒ †𝚊𝚔𝚎, 𝚊ᥒ𝚍 𝙸 𝚊ო ᥕ𝚊ʏ ௦٧𝚎ⲅ ოʏ ⎝ᵢოᵢ†, 𝚋υ𝚍.
He glanced down at the shadowed grass below, pondering the individual blades that stuck out over the rest of the lawn as he traced his phalange along the grain of the wood.

The door to the balcony slid open behind him. He didn't pay it any mind, he could recognize the idle Determination in the other's aura.
The newcomer had to stand on their tiptoes to easily lean on the balcony alongside him.
Both just stood there, waiting for the other to speak or move.

"Heya." He broke the silence, still gazing out across the horizon.
"Hey, Sans." Came the faint reply.
"Any sign of the Dog yet?"
He grunted, shrugging a little. "Nothin'. Paps is really worried- you seen him? He thinks the pup ran away because of him. I've tried convincing him otherwise, I'm sure Tobes just decided to hang out somewhere else for a little while, y'know?"

A minute passed as the child thought.
"Have you checked the Underground? Maybe he was visiting some monsters that stayed behind."

Sans sighed again, lifting his face up just enough to prop his skull up on one arm.
"I did, actually. No sign of him there, either."
"...Sans.... Could he have..?"
"Nah, he's alive. I'd know if he's gone. I can't tell where he is, but he's fine. Just.. missin'." He studied the rim of the unbelievably bright sun- so bright even he couldn't really see it clearly- with a frown.

The conversation lapsed again. Frisk sighed.
"Endogeny is still missing. Do you think the disappearances are connected?"
"I dunno. Are they?" He glanced at the child for the first time with a hint of suspicion, the look quickly vanishing.

Frisk peered at him in confusion. "I don't understand? How would I know?"
He shrugged, a tired smile back in place as he shifted back onto the rail.
"Forget it, kiddo. Just.. lil' frustrated, is all. This has never happened before. I don't get why it's happnin' now."

It was quiet for a long minute, then Frisk scurried to the door, peering inside before closing it gently, muffling the click. The action intrigued Sans, who glanced back at the child before they faced him cautiously.
"Could it be something about the Multiverse?" They whispered.

He tensed, remembering the awful things he'd witnessed in reference to that hell.
"Why would this have anything to do with that?" He asked, deceptively calm.
Frisk hesitated, wringing their hands- a habit they'd picked up from Toriel.
"I don't know. I've just been thinking lately. We know there's a society of your alternates, so maybe there's one of.. dogs? Maybe?"

He relaxed a little- only a little- as he fell backwards to lean on the rail.
"I dunno. That seems like a bit of a stretch, doesn't it? When I left, only an hour passed for the rest of you while for me.. for me, it.." His eyelights went out as he remembered.
"..It doesn't make sense. Let's leave the past to the past, 'kay?"

"Okay. I didn't mean to bother you like that, I just thought-" "'Sokay. You're tryin'. More than I am, tibia honest." He chuckled drily. Frisk smiled a little, awkward as they realized they didn't know how to continue the conversation.

Sans huffed out a short breath, eyelights drifting over the eastern horizon, sun shining down on the back of his worn hoodie.
"Look, if nothing comes up in the next.. say, month, I'll try to look into that. As unlikely as it is, this is completely out of character for Toby and Endogeny. Okay, kid?"

"Okay." Frisk glanced at the setting sun, squinting harder at the intense light before settling into a disappointed stance. "I guess this is goodbye for tonight. Mom's expecting me for dinner soon. Goodnight, Sans."

They had finished speaking as they reached and opened the balcony door, pausing.
"Take care of yourself, Sans. You look extra tired."

He smirked slightly. "You know me. Just bone tired, as usual." He chuckled at the kid's grin, Frisk slipping inside. He kept smiling sleepily until he was sure the human was downstairs. Then the lazy grin vanished.
"I know you're there, y'know. Why are you tryin' to hide?" He asked in suspicion, glancing around in hopes of catching sight of his watcher.
What happened next chilled him.

Hҽʅʅσ, Sαɳʂ.

He didn't.. hear it. Nor did it feel quite like something he imagined, like a voice in his mind.
No, it was as though something's voice boomed and he only could feel the vibration of it's words in his Soul. A voice that pressed into his Soul.
"What... Who are you? What are you?" He demanded, already entirely unsettled.

I αɱ ɳҽιƚԋҽɾ α ɯԋαƚ ɳσɾ α ɯԋσɱ. I αɱ ɳσ ιԃҽɳƚιƚყ, ɱҽɾҽʅყ ƈσɳʂƈισυʂ ƈσɳƈҽρƚ. It pulsed in reply.
Dσ ɳσƚ Ⴆҽ αϝɾαιԃ, Sαɳʂ.

He scoffed, rattling slightly despite himself. "If you'll excuse me, but hearing a voice I can't actually hear is pretty damn bone chilling."

Tԋιʂ ιʂ ɱყ ʅҽαʂƚ ϝσɾɱιԃαႦʅҽ ϝσɾɱ. It explained with a strange benevolence.
Mყ ʂҽʅϝ ιʂ ɳσƚ ʂσ ƈσɱρɾҽԋҽɳʂιႦʅҽ αʂ ყσυɾ ɱιɳԃ ɱαყ ιɱαɠιɳҽ.

He groaned, shoving his hands in his pockets more defensively than anything. It felt wrong to feel a voice on the center of his being like this.
"Try me. I'd prefer something I don't understand over words on my Soul. Really. Give me my personal space."

There was a long moment, perhaps a full minute of silence after he felt it pull away. He almost wondered if it just left when something.. warped in the air in front of him. Like the beginning of a teleport, but slowed down several hundred times.

The warping spread, gaining a faint opacity of a familiar blue, then transitioning into a violet blue that darkened and darkened.. or was it somehow sucking in light? Either way, it grew darker, yet darker- the darkness just kept growing, as if alive.

A strange fear flashed briefly through him, fear of the unknown as he caught glimpses of silver-blue light that somehow seemed to have texture, like silk. Perhaps it was the pattern of shades rippling through it as it disappeared.

If he hadn't seen a portal before, Sans would have thought this looked exactly like a hole in reality.
... Maybe that's what it was. A hole leading not to just another place, but another dimension.

Or perhaps it was something else entirely.
He started to glimpse flecks of light within the darkness, joined by swathes of textured silver blue with motes of color that.. he couldn't name.
It was bewildering.

It began to slow, a strange wub sound pulsing slowly out from the thing as orbs of light seemed to emerge from within it, silver and blue-white as they revolved diagonally both ways around it in an X that was sometimes a cross. The air behind it wobbled in vague shapes he couldn't identify, but it was.. he didn't know what to think.

Dσ ɳσƚ Ⴆҽ αϝɾαιԃ. I αɱ ɳσƚ ԋҽɾҽ ƚσ ԃσ ԋαɾɱ. He felt it's voice as though it pressed down on him from it's direction rather than inside- one thing to be grateful for.
He opened his mouth to speak, but his voice caught.

He tried again, but all that came out was a faint wheeze. Then he realized he couldn't remember what he had been about to say. The being he was staring at felt so entirely unreal, so beyond him, unearthly, terrifying, mind breaking- he had to force himself to look away. He couldn't think straight whenever he was looking at it.

"What." He finally coughed out, shocked at the hoarseness of his voice.
"What are you here for." He managed to work out, staring at his favorite slippers. The being expanded briefly in front of him, something incorporeal brushing his left shoulder softly.

I αɱ ԋҽɾҽ Ⴆҽƈαυʂҽ σϝ ყσυ, Sαɳʂ.
"..Why?"
The wood between his feet seemed to twist in on itself into a spiral, warped by the entity- then it blurred and was normal again, save for the blur that was likely just his vision being messed with by its presence.

He blinked, coughing weakly as he felt one warp tug at his ribs. He licked his teeth and spoke again.
"What does that mean? Or are you going to go all secretive on me?"
Even here, he couldn't contain his snarkiness.

The entity seemed to either not take offense or simply didn't care. However, it's next words carried the weight of a prophecy that spoke of end times.
Eʋҽɾყƚԋιɳɠ ყσυ ƙɳσɯ αɳԃ ʅσʋҽ ιʂ ɠσιɳɠ ƚσ Ⴆҽ σႦʅιƚҽɾαƚҽԃ, ɯιƚԋ σɳʅყ α ϝҽɯ ιɱρσɾƚαɳƚ ʂσυʅʂ ʂυɾʋιʋιɳɠ ιɳƚαƈƚ ƚσ ƚԋҽ σƚԋҽɾ ʂιԃҽ. Uɳʅҽʂʂ ƚԋҽყ αɾҽ αʂ ƚιҽԃ ιɳƚσ ƚԋҽ ϝαႦɾιƈ σϝ ҽxιʂƚҽɳƈҽ αʂ I.

He gasped weakly, horrified by the idea.
"Why? Why are you even telling me this? What point do you have in this?" He questioned, barely holding on to the guardrail behind him as he grew weaker, drained by the being merely existing this close by.

It seemed to draw closer, a phantom touch brushing the side of his skull. Silver and blue flashed around him.
Oԋ, ʅιƚƚʅҽ ʂριɾιƚ. Yσυ αɾҽ ɱιʂƚαƙҽɳ. Yσυ, ყσυɾ ϝαɱιʅყ, ყσυɾ ʅσʋҽԃ σɳҽʂ αɾҽ αʅʅ ʂƚɾσɳɠ ҽɳσυɠԋ ƚσ ɱαƙҽ ιƚ. Iƚ ιʂ σɳʅყ ƚԋҽ ɯσɾʅԃ ιƚʂҽʅϝ αɳԃ Ⴆҽιɳɠʂ ʅιƙҽ ɱყʂҽʅϝ ɯԋσ αɾҽ ιɳ ԃαɳɠҽɾ. Tԋαƚ ԃαɳɠҽɾ ιʂ ƚԋҽ ɾҽαʂσɳ ϝσɾ ɱყ αρρҽαɾαɳƈҽ ɳσɯ.

He blinked, realizing he was blinking back tears. Wow, this thing's aura really made him weak. Normally even when he felt crushed he could keep a smile.
"Who's Fate?" He found himself asking, looking for something to distract him from the fear.

The entity drew back somewhat, an inaudible hum pressing against him from it. He got the sense of.. disdain from the being.

"So.. what you're saying is Fate's like karma but worse?" Sans asked.
He was treated to a moment of confusion from the other. It was somehow immensely satisfying to be the one to baffle an incomprehensible being that he had no doubt was older than time.
"I'm saying it's a bitch times ten." He explained with a chuckle, daring to glance up at the entity.

That wasn't a good idea to do, as he quickly realized not only was it impossible to tell what it was thinking by looking at it, but in doing so his mind went empty, stuck on trying to process what was what.

He sluggishly remembered to look away, gasping to clear his mind as the entity just waited patiently for him to recover.
"Yeah. Dunno if you're aware, but no matter what, I'm always rattlin' out humerus jokes an' puns."
I αɱ ɱσɾҽ ƚԋαɳ αɯαɾҽ.

There was a pause, skeleton collecting his thoughts, then he asked a question.
"In regards to this world-ending scenario that we are somehow supposed to survive, why then, appear to me over it? What do I have to do with this?"

It slowly drifted up and down, bobbing in a slow rhythm as he felt the air around him twist. Then it answered, almost seeming cautious.

Sans scowled, indeed recognizing the name and disgusted by it. He'd known Ink through the other falsely convincing him to help because his own damn Soul was on the line, then.. betrayed them all so completely. Soulless bastard.

"I wasn't aware that everything included the Multiverse as well." He grumbled.

"Fine. You have a point, it's still out there. But again: How am I so important in this? I don't have any special powers. I throw a mean slipper."

The being seemed to be amused- at least, he got an impression of amusement, but he could never be sure. The world seemed to fall towards it's center as though it were a black hole before things snapped back into place.

"Okay, okay, sure. But you at least have to have a name. You mentioned some opposite of yours called Fate, so what are you called? ... Choice? Heh."
It leaned in closer for a moment, as though those floating orbs were studying him- like eyes.

He didn't miss that detail.

"So.." He drawled, unable to resist the call.
"You're saying that I'm destined to help you?"
He felt his smile fade a little when he sensed it take offense.

"What I fail to understand is what this choice actually is yet. You've been so incredibly vague, I think the most you've said is that we can help each other. You haven't told me what I'm choosing. Care to explain that yet?"

A faint breeze seemed to sweep past him, emanating from the entity as though it were sighing. He didn't want to know what it looked like doing that.
He kind of wished he could unsee this being in general. He wasn't exactly all that terrified, but so incredibly confused. His mind kept looping back into what he saw against his will in the effort to make sense of it.

It spoke then, with a bluntness that rivalled even Undyne, yet what it was saying was still so odd, it still sounded like more riddles.

Nσ, I ԃσ ɳσƚ ɱҽαɳ ʋҽԋιƈʅҽ.

He hummed awkwardly, not really liking this option as he dared look fully away to the su- ꟽ𝚑𝚊† †𝚑𝚎 ᵳυϲ𝚔.

This world warping was not specific to the point before him on the balcony. The sky was a deep, grey-black, cut through with swathes of blue and silver light, and a river of star pinpoints seemed to flow out of the black hole the sun had transformed into, only a corona of flames around it with it's center like a void- it actually looked much closer than before, and therefore much, much smaller. The landscape was changed into blue-green plants that glowed dimly and the buildings were just shadows. Only his house remained unchanging, it's surface warping like air on a hot day.

He flinched back to stare at the boards between his feet, gasping from the pure shock of it. The lighting had looked exactly the same as it had before the being had warped itself in front of him, giving no indication that the world was suddenly this.
"What did you do?" He demanded, feeling panic rise despite his efforts to push it down.

Tԋҽ ɯσɾʅԃ ιʂ ɱҽɾҽʅყ ԋҽʅԃ ιɳ ʂƚαʂιʂ αʂ ყσυ ԃҽƈιԃҽ. It explained simply. Sans scoffed lightly, glancing at the.. the sun again.

He blinked several times, just closing his sockets to the madness outside as he focused. Then it occurred to him.
"Wait.. you said you'd.. die, if I don't choose yes- essentially. You're basically saying that even if I say no to this.. idea, that you'll leave me alone and die when it all falls apart?"

"...You.. invented Reset?" He felt cold, disgusted, angry. Then he felt a pulse against him, and a faint.. almost feminine voice seemed to whisper from.. it felt as though it had reached into his Soul to have an audible voice through him.
It spoke in tune with the pressure on his limbs, emotion finally identifiable in it.
It was like it was crying.

Sans gasped as he regained use of his breath, realizing it had spoken using him. He was almost mortified, but..
He'd felt that sorrow.
It wanted him to feel that, to understand how pained it was.
He was still upset that it had.. violated him like that, but he understood the intent behind it.

"Look." He muttered, rubbing his neck vertebrae.
"I didn't like that." He waved a phalange in it's direction, huffing in amusement as he imagined how far off from it he was.
"I don't want to be possessed. I'd rather be me. What you're suggesting sounds like you're just taking my body and doing something with my mind. What, trapping me in my own skull? I don't like that idea."

He leaned away as a tendril of warping air reached for him from the side. It still touched him, the contact feeling cool yet electric.

He hesitated. He didn't sense a lie from it- really, this entity felt incredibly honest, brutally so. This offer sounded.. less detestable with those parameters, but he couldn't help but feel reluctant about it. What about his privacy?

...He couldn't help but remember all the times he'd failed to protect others. Failed.
Failed. Failed.
He wanted to be able to live up to his title, to expectations.
A chance.
A choice.

".... Would it hurt?" He found himself asking, despite his hesitations. He could feel the being drift closer to him, the power suffusing the air with so much mana and electricity, he could feel it tingling against him as it grew close enough that he was sure it was in his face- though he still didn't dare open his sockets.

"That's not very assuring." He remarked, shuddering away from the unnatural thing in uncontrollable fear. He couldn't help it.

He got the sense that it agreed with his point, that it too, was hesitant. That pause on the other's part somehow helped him ease up a little. Even a being as ancient and incomprehensible as this thing was susceptible to emotions like fear.

Then he was suddenly awash in brilliance, vast, inconceivable amounts of energy just collapsing into his Soul. He couldn't see, couldn't hear, there was nothing but the titanic ocean of energy, he was sinking and unable to swim. It was everywhere, around him, inside him, he was like a sinking ship with water rushing in so fast it was tearing the metal.

Then he felt himself stop, consciousness going black as he lost the ability to continue processing entirely.
