Chapter 2 - the Beginning of School

The beginning of the school year

School had been going for a month now, and Phil had witnessed it all. No, no one had died or anything, it's just that moving to an new school is a bit of a big thing, not to mention stressful, especially if you've lived somewhere your whole life and were suddenly thrown out, which was exactly what had happened. Fine, so not thrown out exactly, but it's not like Phil had a say in any of this.

These were the thoughts buzzing around Phils head as he sat at his desk in his home room, bored, waiting for the day to start. He heard the bell ring, stretched, and layed back in his chair, waiting for his name to be called for attendance. That's when he spotted him. The kid from the pool!

Dan stared down at his feet, fidgeting with his fingers, extremely nervous and uncomfortable while the guidance counselor talked to who he assumed was his new home room teacher, or at least that's what seemed like was going on, he wasn't paying much attention.

Phil gave a little wave at Dan, hoping to get his attention.

"Psst! Over here!" He whispered, trying not to come off as an overly excited puppy, but still wanting to get noticed.

Dan spotted something out of the corner of his eye and looked up at it, raising his eyebrow slightly, before grinning when he saw who it was.

"Hi" he whispered nervously, waving at Phil.

"Dan, this is your homeroom teacher, Mr. Weatherwax. You will also have him for math." The guidance counselor, Ms. Perez informed him, jolting him out of his own little world.

"Um, okay. Thanks." He replied shyly, looking back down at his feet.

"Class, this is our new student, Daniel Howell, please make sure to say hi and make him feel welcome." Mr. Weatherwax told the class before turning back to Dan.

"Dan, you can take that empty seat over there, beside Philip Lester." He told him, motioning to the empty seat.

"Uh, sure." Dan replied, hoisting his bag up onto his shoulder and sitting down next to Phil. He hung his backpack on the back of his chair before turning to face Phil with a wide smile.

"Hi!" Phil said excitedly as the teacher rattled off the attendance.

"Joseph Sugg?"

"Here."

"Connor Lee?"

"Yup."

"Ella James Grossman?"

"Hi!"

"Oakes Adkins?"

"Mhmm."

"Louise Pentland?"

"Present!"

"Zorah Smith?"

"Huh? What? Oh! Here!"

"Daniel Howell?"

Dan looked up from where he was quietly having a conversation with Phil.

"Here." He said quietly before turning back to Phil.

"Kaden Mahal?"

"Yup!"

"Philip Lester?"

"Here." He said, yawning and looking up for a brief second before turning back around to face Dan.

"So?" Phil asked as the teacher continued rattling off names. "How's life been? I didn't know you came to this school, why'd you start so late?" He asked excitedly, barely giving Dan any time to answer.

"I-I'm fine." Dan said, still a little unnerved by the whole ordeal "but yeah, apparently this is the closest high school to my new house, so, yeah." He explained, chuckling nervously, "and sorry I started late, we've just been finishing unpacking and moving in and whatnot." He said, keeping it brief so he wouldn't get boring, and besides, class was about to start.

"I'll tell you more later" he whispered to Phil as the teacher started talking.

"Okay" Phil whispered back as pulled out his notebook and turned to face the teacher.

Dan did the same, trying to keep up with the rest of class and take as many notes as he could, joining a new school late is no easy feat, even if it is just a month.
