Chapter 1 - Summer

The Beginning of the Summer

It was the beginning of the summer, before business at the pool had really gotten started and the whole place was relatively empty. As far as he knew, Phil was the only one there. He had decided to get there a little bit early to get some extra practice time in before the big swim meet.

Phil stepped into the pool room and stretched his arms silently. He noticed some noise in the changing room, blinking curiously as he peered into the room. He flinched back seeing someone run through the door. He backed up, looking at the brown haired boy that had just startled him. He stepped forward cautiously.

"You okay?" He asked, a hint of worry in his voice.

"I-I'm fine" the boy said unconvincingly as a few tears worked their way down his cheeks.

"You don't seem like it." Phil blinked softly, honestly concerned. He was always the kind of person to try his hardest to make everything okay, even if he didn't know the person, which was exactly the current scenario.

The other boy looked at the ground, "I don't really wanna talk about it right now" he mumbled, not sure why this stranger seemed so concerned for him. Sure, he was a cute stranger, but a stranger nonetheless and it wasn't really any of his business.

Phil shrugged and walked off. Apparently he wasn't getting anywhere, and of course he was used to being rejected, that was a price he was willing to pay for the majority to be happy. By this time, he had memorized all the 'leave me alone you're creeping me out' cues, and quickly caught on that that was exactly the case. He walked to the edge of the pool and jumped in I might as well warm up before the swim race he thought to himself.

The mysterious grieving boy sat on bleachers and watched, not really feeling like swimming today. He was previously planning on at least getting some practice in... but something had come up.

Phil started to tread water looking at the other. "Are you going to come in? Or is now not a good time?" He asked curiously. Maybe there was still hope.

"I dunno" The boy said, getting up and wiping his eyes. He really wasn't in the mood, but it was worth a shot. Swimming always seemed to calm his nerves. "I might as well" he said, heading to the changing room. He hadn't had time to change before.

Phil shrugged and dipped back into the water. He started doing some water exercises, stretching his arms and legs.

I bet he looks good in a swimsuit he thought to himself, smiling at the thought, before mentally kicking himself

You met him five minutes ago Phil, you cheeky shit! He might be an asshole for all you know! Plus, he probably isn't even gay! He thought to himself

Well, what if he is? He looks like he needs a friend anyway He argued back

And this is why I'm single, I scare all the cute boys away, being so forward! He rolled his eyes to himself, chuckling a little bit.

Mystery boy walked back out, now only wearing a cute pair of plain navy swim shorts, perfectly showing of his legs and torso. He got in position and dove into the water, doing a lap and letting the water wash away his previous worries and stress, calming his nerves and relaxing him before resurfacing.

Phil smiled at him. "Now your in the mood?" He chuckled, taking in the sight before him, smiling to himself

Damn He thought He's hotter than I thought

The other boy apparently noticed him staring and immediately started blushing, averting his gaze.

"I- I guess so..." he said, still blushing profusely, before diving back under water, embarrassed, but with a grin no doubt.

So maybe it was worth it? He smiled to himself, he actually didn't think so poorly of the other boys swim trunks either He looks good in that color he smiled, admiring the light pink pattern with little lions stitched around the bottom hem I'd almost describe it as... rose gold! He chuckled at the thought of his old inside jokes, with his old friends, who he had just left behind, and who he missed dearly. He was about to continue feeling sorry for himself, but suddenly remembered that he was underwater. He shot up to the surface, gasping for breath.

Phil let a sly smirk form across his face. "Forget to breath?" He asked, chuckling.

The other boy just rolled his eyes and started swimming laps, popping up every time he passed Phil. "I'm Dan, by the way" He finally introduced himself, after about four laps and a raised eyebrow from Phil the whole time.

"Phil" Phil introduced himself, grinning "took you long enough to say hi"

Dan chuckled nervously "yeah, I guess it did. Sorry" he apologized, embarrassed

"It's nothing, at least I got to talk to you!" Phil laughed, before realizing those words had just come out of his mouth, and was already regretting it. He looked down, trying to hide his blushing.

"Yeah, I guess" Dan said, smiling at Phils bright red face

They were stopped short by the members of the swim team coming in.

"So, are you competing?" Phil asked hopefully

"Me? Nah, I don't think so" Dan replied, but quickly followed up with "I wish I could, but I'm already a part of another swim team... so... yeah..." he ended the sentence awkwardly, but blurting out "I'm thinking of trying out in the spring though" when he saw how crestfallen Phil looked

"Oh, ok! See you then!" Phil said, relieved

"Yeah, you too!" Dan chuckled as he got out, waving good bye to Phil as he walked back into the changing room.
