chapter one
The sun rays, warm and welcoming passed through the curtains, fell on my face.
The warm feeling should have been so welcoming, yet it didn't. Not at least now when I was sleeping; I tried my best to block it with the help of some essentials around me - the pillows as well as the warm blanket, but all were in vain.
And finally, I was up, the sleep which I had adored so much was brutally snatched away from me, and for this none was to be blamed but me!
This is what you all would be thinking might have happened right now; but no the sun rays are way too tolerable, they could at least be ignored by some things, but the most horrible thing would be ...
A BUCKET OF FULL OF ICE being thrown on me, in the month of November, and that's what happened.
The November morning was nowhere in its place to destroy this beautiful sleep of mine. I was content and happy in my bed, a queen sized with fluffy blanket and pillows, and me peacefully covered in them.
Only until my best friends decided to ruin it with that whole bucket filled with ice water- brutal was an unclean word.
As soon as the cold ice fell on me, I jolted up - my sleep was now long forgotten, leaving me as a kid without his favourite candy.
Who wouldn't be upset?
The sleep is as important for a person as food - but for me, it's more important than that, it's my life and being woken from a peaceful sleep the thought was something I would never want to entertain.
I groggily opened my eyes only to meet the two devil Abha and Nitya laughing loudly.
"What the hell guys? Don't you have your own house to sleep in? and Abha, it would be really great of you if you would go and wake up your sweet fiancé rather than waking me up." I said in an irked tone, to the two bitches without whom spending my life now seems to be insurmountable.
We weren't those childhood friends who end up rescuing each other and then become good friends. In fact, we were the worst of enemies well you can say so in the case of Abha.
Me and Abha we had met in the 5th grade, but being as naive as I was, for me she was grouped under those girls who were bitches and were around only for chocolates on your birthday.
That was the trend at that time, girls and boys would always follow and kiss the grounds on which the birthday boy or girl would walk.
I wouldn't say that I didn't enjoyed it... it was fun, but then, when it wasn't us who was getting the attention the story would be completely different.
And may be judging her at that naive age, That was the biggest mistake of my life ...I had made up an image of hers, without even giving her a chance to show her best pose.
But when we're forced to sit together... I came to know that what a gem she was, and then it took us hardly a week to tell each other the darkest of our secrets. To say I was glad was an understatement; I was thankful and am thankful to that supreme power who gave me a chance to improve myself.
As the coin has two sides, these two friends of mine were the two different sides of the coin. Nitya was the girl whom I met in 6 grade and became friends instantly, she was a shy and soft spoken girl, but they say right that time changes everything; well in the case of my friend the time changed her upside down.
From a soft spoken and quiet girl, she eventually became a -tomboy with the raunchiest mind of our group.
"Oh, shit !", I caterwauled as another mug full of ice was poured on me by my friends who were laughing their ass out.
"Abha, Nitya run for your... ", before I could have even completed my sentence, I sneezed; adding one more element to their 'reasons to laugh at Arohi' list.
I was always a person with weak immune system, the cold and cough along with fever were my best friends, in the teenage hood and that was what I got as a gift from that period.
"Errrr, " I ran towards them but they soon sensed the danger and ran out of my room to save their life.
The chase along the house as a mouse and cat was dear to everyone, the words that followed showed anger and love which I had for my friends, but the most it showed was our - childhood!
" Wait! you two idiots, I am seriously going to kill you, I swear If I catch a cold I am ....", Before I could have even completed my sentence and take a turn at the corner, I ran into both of them making three of us stumble ahead into none other than my mom.
My mom was someone whom you would always turn around from when she was in this mood- her hands on her hips and her eyes narrowed at you.
Though at times she was as sweet as nectar, it was quite difficult to handle her when she came in this avatar.
And seeing her in the same prohibited look, Immediately my mind said only one thing 'Arohi turn around and run for your life!'
But then it seemed as if God was not with me that day – as soon as I was about to turn around my mom spoke in her stern voice," Don't you dare go from here Dr Arohi kadam or else the consequences would be worst."
I nodded my head in agreement and hung my head ready for the scolding which I was going to get now for the whole mess.
"What is this Arohi? Where were you last night? Did you think, that I didn't come to know that last night you came home at about 12?"
She then directed her eyes at Abha and made her the next target, "Abha, you should have sent her home early or else made her stay over there itself. Now since you have forgotten your manners won't it be quite happening to have today's morning breakfast which would be made by my lovely daughters?"
our eyes widened as she kept on speaking, waving her hand on us she continued to direct us, "now make sure that the breakfast is ready in an hour you two and Arohi I want your room and you yourself to be cleaned in fifteen minutes.come on, get back to work" before we could even protest she walked away.
I sighed and then walked towards my room. cooking food was one of my favourite activity especially at that time when I am angry and sad, which might help me a bit, but when you have a shopping spree planned in about 2 hours, your favourite activity as well becomes a burden.
And then, this wasn't a normal shopping spree; this plan was made specially to arrange things for Abha's engagement. An event so special and dear to all of us!
I looked at the two idiots, whose head were now hanging low. That was the effect my mom had on everyone. But then every Indian mom would be like that right?
Come home early before 8, have green leafy veggies, don't sit with your legs up, and most important don't you dare wear those short knickers in this house, which we girls prefer calling shorts.
Mine is that way, a bit dear, caring and a lot more strict when comes to discipline.
But again, the shopping was more important for now. Defeated i took a deep breath and said, "Come on girls it's 8 we have to reach the market by 10 or else we won't be able to finish today's agenda."
Both of them just nodded and began to do their work I gathered my clothes and went to take a bath.
Well not before huggingAbha. Abha was getting married in about a month or so, her's was a love with arranged marriage, with our school friend Vihan Singh they were college sweethearts when we had gone for our 12 standard farewell party, Vihan had proposed Abha who was already head over heels in love with him and immediately said yes.
Then as we all had applied for colleges. I was here in Mumbai for medical along with Nitya for her BSc. Abha and Vihan had gone to IIT Gujrat for their engineering college.
Our group had always been a big one with me, Nitya, Devansh,Vihan, Abha, Kabeer, Raghav, Rhea, Misha and not to forget Arjun.
While me, Nitya, Abha, Rhea, and Misha were closest of friends, Devansh, Vihan, Raghav, and Arjun were very close, in fact, Vihaan and Arjun were the inseparable friends.
But after 12, as everyone says things changes, ours as well did. Though we had never given that thing a thought, we believed that our bond was not that strong that just the mere studies would separate us.
But then who were we to decide it? The destiny had made us meet... and it played a fair game, such that, even we didn't realise that shattered us so brutally that it took about 11 years now to acknowledge each other again.
After a refreshing bath, I came out wearing my light blue skinny jeans a purple coloured tank top and paired it with a black coloured shrug. I combed my waist lengthen hair and let them stay open, after applying a bit of mascara, kohl and lip glow I was ready for the tiring day.
As it was a Saturday and since I had taken two days leave for shopping I didn't have to worry much about the hospital.
The childish dream of becoming a doctor, I didn't know how but became true and with a lot of efforts with in about 10 years I was considered as one of the finest cardiologists at Sanjeevani hospital, here in Mumbai.
I took my phone and pager in case there is any kind of emergency and went down to the kitchen where my two best friends were already making breakfast. I took out the dough and neaded it for making the parathas.
Within half an hour the dining table was filled with toast, sandwiches, cereals, milk buttermilk, paratha, pickle, mango juice, orange juice, and two types of milkshakes.
The breakfast has always been a huge feast at our place, that's what my dad believe; the day should start with a healthy breakfast, one, which the whole family should have together.
He says 'a healthy diet is accepted by the body only when the heart and mind are happy, and it will be happy only when, we see, meet, talk and eat with our family."
And hence, from the time I have known what my name is, I remember sitting on the chair just beside my dad, the dining table filled with my whole family, which gradually increased with the introduction of my two lovely bhabhi's, and their children.
I soon called everyone for the breakfast. And just like that room was filled with utter chaos, my elder brothers, Darshan and Shivank having their usual cute banter with their wives Dhrishti and Arya, the twins Shiv and Aisha getting excited for their share of breakfast and my parents who were scolding Arya for not taking care of herself, with her being in her last trimester of pregnancy.
"Arohi, I and Shivank, we were thinking that we would have lunch today with you three, just let us know where to meet, we will join you girls." Darshan smiled at me, while we devoured our breakfast.
When we grow, it's not just the age, but as well the responsibility. Never had I thought that to spend time with my elder brothers I would have to go for shopping, my friend's engagement shopping to be exact.
"Yeah sure, I'll give you a call when we are done," I said and got up gave a quick hug to my dad and towards the parking lot.
I took out my car and drove through the city of Mumbai, for a better start we went to the Siddhivinayak temple. took blessings and then hit the malls.
It took us at least three hours to choose Abha's dress for her engagement which was next week. We had planned to complete all the shopping today itself as we could relax the whole week including our sweet Sunday.
It was Around two when we were done for time being and I called Darshan asking where to meet, "hey!we are done and are walking off to the McDonalds, you guys are coming right?"
"Arohi, it seems we won't be able to join you, right now we have got a new project and the contract for that has to be drawn up, it will take a lot of time. I am really sorry." the happy, yet the sad voice of my brother boomed through the speakers of my phone.
"It's okay bhai... congratulations, we would go next time take care." with a final bye we ended the call, and after a small treat again headed towards the cosmetic section this time.
By 5 in the evening, we were done with the shopping all things required from head toe was now in the shopping bags which we held. To say we were tired was an understatement. As we began to leave the mall, I received a pajer I dropped them both at Abha's house as we're going to have a night out tonight,i drove to the hospital.
Like every other group of friends we girls had dreams for our wedding, the sleep over was one of it. It is said and is true, life after marriage changes, none matters but the one whom we marry, and hence to just be and reminisce our being of friendship, this contract was made.
Where we all girls would be staying the weekends at each other's place from the time the wedding is fixed until the day of the wedding, and none would spoil the plans - not even our kids if we had by then.
The day, when it finally came to an end it gave me goosebumps. Finally, it was time to meet the others.
Me, Nitya and Abha were still staying in Mumbai, hence we were in contact but the others... they were some old story which most of the things and people around us had forgotten.
And this night was to make the same people and things to remember our existence.
When I came to Abha's place, I found that all my friends were sitting there in the garden with a huge bag in front of them and not to forget the bonfire as well, which only meant that they were ready to reminecise the golden old days. The thought made all the tiredness that was within me run out of the window .
I stood there by the gate looking at them. The chairs which we had bought with our savings were there and were mostly filled only two of them were empty one was mine and the other was his ARJUN.
It brought all the bittersweet memories of ours. How we would always fight over small things but never had I thought that I would miss that idiot so much , it's as if he was never there all those memories sometimes seems as if they are those dreams which felt real and when we wake up in the morning some parts we remember as a fresh flower but some quite blur, but then the things like these chairs and then the photograph tells that they are true they are very much true.
'ARJUN where are you please come back, see my cham chi is getting married please at least for your friend.' I thought, as I took a long breath and was about to go to them when I heard someone's voice
"Don't worry I am sure that idiot of yours would come, he can't ditch us this time!" it was Vihan. I smiled at him and then went and sat on my place looking at the beautiful memories of ours with Arjun, praying what Vihan said would come true and some more events would be set in this list of memories.
