But If You Close Your Eyes
//Shameless use of surprisingly fitting Pompeii lyrics don't kill me//
The Doctor followed Larry into the back storage room, a cold garage pulled high with crates.
"Newest shipments, it seems, have just arrived," said Larry, noting the new wooden boxes.
"McPhee says they're thousands of years old and still in good shape. I really don't see the problem with a few new additions."
The Doctor ignored Larry's obvious irritation at being forced into leading this stranger around. He pulled out the same stick used to change Jed and Octavius' height and pointed it at the box. It whizzed loudly for half a minute and The Doctor looked up.
The Doctor's face was emotionless: the same face one gives when face-to-face with danger, yet trying to keep someone else calm. His voice was steady, but sharp. Even Larry didn't dare to question it.
"If I were you... Larry Daley, you too..., I would get as far away from this box as possible, as soon as possible. Even sooner, if you can."
The Doctor spoke very quickly and quietly, but his eyes were wide, his face flooded with caution.
"Humongo, what's in the box?" Jedediah asked, forgetting that he didn't have to shout to be heard anymore.
"Something dangerous, and I'll explain in a minute. You there, in the brown, keep your eyes on that box."
Everyone was backing slowly toward the exit, staring at the box as though it was going to explode. Maybe it was.
All they knew was that a very sick feeling overwhelmed them. Jedediah felt as though he'd eaten a rock and it was stuck in his stomach.
"Doctor... tell me what's in the box," Larry said, backing up.
"What's in this box is something that could potentially kill us all. It is imperative that we get it away from this museum, and, more importantly, my TARDIS."
"A bomb?" Octavius offered, since that had given no explanation.
"No, worse than a bomb. --Keep watching that box-- I don't know why they're here. They're called Weeping Angels. They are the fastest creatures in existence. Faster than you can believe. If you look away from them, they will attack you."
The tension in the air was thick enough to be sliced with Octavius' sword (which was drawn and pointed at the box) and every person was wide eyed.
"This one happens to be a bit hurt. Damaged. But they can repair if they get the energy,"
"How do they get energy?" Larry asked, pulling out his flashlight as though it could save him.
"When someone blinks," whispered The Doctor.
Suddenly, Jedediah felt his eyes drying out and an urge to blink.
"When someone blinks, looks away, or isn't watching, they move. As long as they're being watched, they're solid stone-- and you can't kill stone. But the minute you look away, the send you to the past. Feed off all that time energy. All that lost potential, all that was meant to be... gone."
"But the crate is locked," muttered Jedediah, staring at the hinges.
"For now. But believe me, they're strong. Living stone...," The Doctor flicked the long stick he used.
WHAM!
The crate shook violently. Something was hitting it from the inside.
"But everything comes to life at night!" Sacagawea said quickly. "It's because of the tablet of Ahkmenrah!"
The Doctor's head snapped up. "OH! I'm so-- Oh, Doctor Idiot, that's what they're here for! Teddy and Sacagawea! Get the tablet! Hurry!"
Craaack!
"Run!" cried several voices at once.
WHAM! WHAM-CRASH!
Teddy was the first one up and out the door, ushering Sacagawea around him, using himself as a protective barrier. Teddy then grabbed Larry by the arm.
"Come on Lawrence, hurry!"
"Jed, Octavius, move!" cried The Doctor, pushing Octavius toward the door. Octavius hadn't expected it and bumped Jedediah. Jed skittered backwards from the impact, catching his hat.
WHAM!
The box Jedediah stumbled into was crashing open as well.
"You two! Keep your eyes on them!" His stick whirred again at the crates. "I sonicked the locks. It should hold them, but it's not forever!"
The Doctor started running toward the door, turning to make make 2 X's across each side of his chest as a sign of promise.
"I'll be back, I swear on my life that I'll save yours!"
Jedediah gave Octavius a pleading look and they stood, back to back, one breaking crate each.
Their minds were racing and their hearts were twice as fast.
Don't look away. Don't turn your back. And don't blink. Good luck.
