Chapter Twenty Three
Robert stopped. "No one. Just a neighbor." Donna looked away.
"Do your neighbors always kiss you like that?" His heart sunk, she'd already seen the most crucial part.
"I didn't mean for-" He said. This time Donna cut him off.
"You didn't mean for it to happen or you didn't mean for me to see it?"
Robert sighed. "I guess both, look I'm really sorry." Donna looked at him and then down towards the end of the bed. "Why did you go over there?"
"Because I needed some advice. I felt like I was taking you away from a life you could've had with someone else, someone like Beau."
"What does Beau have to do with this?" She asked, tears welling in her eyes.
"Donna, you deserve someone who can make you happy, like him. He shares your values, and he's got everything you want."
"But I don't want him. I chose you." A single tear broke free and splashed on the blanket.
"What's her name?" She asked.
"Jean. But before you get mad at her, it's not her fault. I'm the one who just hurt her, just like I'm hurting you." He said, choking back his own tears.
"I'm not mad, and if I was, it wouldn't be at her. It would be at you." Her voice was hoarse and practically wearing away. "My God, I've known you since I was fifteen, and for the first time in my life, I'm looking at you, and I don't think I can trust you."
"Don't say that, please don't say that." He said, losing his own battle with the tears.
"I'm serious, you were the first person I met in high school, you work for my parents, you even want my last name, and to go out when I was asleep and end up kissing someone else."
Robert put his head down. "I know. I hate myself right now."
Donna put her hand on his shoulder. He looked into her eyes. "What are you gonna do now?" He asked, not sure he wanted to hear the answer. She sighed.
"There's two kids sleeping down the hall, and they need both of us. So I'm gonna get some sleep tonight, and so are you, and tomorrow Mom is gonna tailor my dress, and I'm gonna marry you." She said, turning the light out and rolling over. Robert laid down beside her and put his arm around her, but she shoved it away.
