Chapter Twenty Six
After a long sun-drenched day of work, Robert showered, got in bed next to Donna, and couldn't sleep. The night brought the rain and he laid there, listening to it. He found himself wishing his parents were here so they could tell him what to do. Of course, if they were here, he thought, I wouldn't be in this situation.
He watched Donna breathe in her sleep. She was here to stand by his side and help him raise his family, and all she asked for was his respect and commitment in return.
He then turned to the window and peeled the curtain back to look at Jean's house. She had no one and nothing going for her in life. She'd drawn a rough hand and her only crime was still being in love with him. How could he leave her alone like that? With no one to care about her, no one to hold her when she cried, no one to celebrate with her when she was on top?
Robert sat up and sighed heavily. He rubbed his hands over his face and stared out into the dark of his room. He remembered his own words about wanting what's best for Mark and Delilah. They were the priority right now, not Jean, not Donna, and certainly not him. Though he knew he'd regret it, probably until the day he died, a decision had been made. Robert got out of bed, took one last look at his fiancée, and grabbed his clothes from the floor.
Donna awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of the doorknob rattling. She looked out to Robert's side of the bed only to see he was gone. She tiptoed down the stairs hurriedly, hoping everything was okay. Donna went to the front door and opened it to see Robert standing there, soaking wet and holding a bunch of dilapidated fuchsia roses.
"It's you, I chose you."
"Robert what're you doing? You're freezing!" She exclaimed, taking the roses and grabbing his hand to pull him inside.
"I went to get you some flowers, forgot my keys. I want you to know that I chose you. I'm done with her."
"Robert, stop." said Donna with a sigh.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"When I said figure it out, I meant figure it out. It's not like picking a shirt out of the closet." She explained.
"But the wedding-"
"I know when the wedding is. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about your life. You're gonna take the time, and really think about how you feel."
There was a momentary silence and Donna kissed Robert's neck. "Until then, let's go to bed." She whispered.
