Chapter Twenty One

The next day, after the kids had been dropped off at school and the livestock had been fed, Bill and Michelle had given Robert and Donna the rest of the day off to finish up any last-minute wedding tasks.

Robert had taken Donna to the diner, where they had been working on a guest list in one of her old school notebooks.

Donna sipped her coffee, then spoke. "Okay, I have Mom, Dad, Mark, Delilah, Uncle Bob, Aunt Ginny, Natalie and Teresa who're gonna be my bridesmaids, um, do you have anyone for groomsmen?"

Robert thought for a moment. He hadn't had many friends in high school, and the ones he did have beat it out of town the first chance they got. "I don't know really, alot of my friends didn't really stick around. Maybe I'll just get Mark into a tiny suit." He suggested, drinking his own coffee.

"Well, that works." said Donna. "Then I have Reverend Tom, his wife Cathy..." She trailed off, scribbling.

"What about my mom and dad?" Asked a male voice behind her as a hand landed on her shoulder. Robert looked at the source of the hand. It was a man, who appeared to be in his late twenties, with short chestnut hair combed back and small blue eyes. He was relatively clean-shaven and had a few pounds on him.

Donna looked up at him, instant recognition in her eyes. "Beau!" She shouted, standing up and hugging him tightly. When they parted, she said, "Robert, this is Reverend Tom's son, Beau. Beau, this is my fiancée Robert."

"Fiancée?"  said Beau, smiling. "Well, I guess I lucked out then, huh?" He joked innocently enough.

"Oh, behave," said Donna with a laugh, shoving his shoulder playfully. She and Beau had been friends ever since her parents had first taken her to Church, and they remained close until Beau moved up North to be a reverend himself.

"So what're you working on there?" He asked, pointing to the notebook. "This is our guest list for our wedding. Are you staying in town? Do you wanna come?"

"I am staying, actually. I just bought a house across the county line. Count me in, kid."

Donna smiled widely, scribbling his name on the list. "It's gonna be on the farm in three days." She informed giddily.

"Three days? And you're just working on your guest list now? " He teased. "Yeah, we kind of waited awhile." said Robert.

"I'll say, well, I gotta go. Glad to see you again, Donna. It was nice meeting you, Robert." He said, walking to the door.

When he was gone, Donna spoke. "I've always wanted a house out there," She mused. Robert was intrigued. Here was a man who obviously liked Donna, found Church just as important as she did, moved into her dream neighborhood, and by some twist of fate she was here, marrying him. It just didn't seem fair. Why was the living definition of the life she wanted, walking out the door without her, right now?
