Chapter Twenty Four
The morning came and Donna woke up, feeling strange. Laying there next to Robert felt like laying next to a stranger. She got out of bed and looked out the window where Jean was getting in her car, dressed in her work uniform. She had a mournful demeanor about her, and Donna wondered if she was just as confused and hurt as she was.
Desperate to get away from her thoughts, she went into the bathroom and turned the shower on, stepping in. She didn't succeed at her escape though, as thoughts about last night flooded her mind. She hadn't been able to hear what they were talking about, but she didn't need any context to the part where Jean had kissed him. Her parents would certainly think less of him if they knew, but whatever was happening was between him, and her, and Jean, and maybe eventually, in some weird way, Beau, but no one else had to be brought into it.
When she was done, she wrapped a towel around herself and exited the bathroom, nearly bumping into him on the way out. They both looked at each other but said nothing.
At the farm, the pair had been harvesting corn and cabbage in silence. "Can we talk?" Robert said eventually.
"You can if you want," Donna said with a shrug, pulling more corn.
"What're we doing now?"
"I already told you."
Robert sighed. "So even though I lost your trust and I'm pretty sure ended anything you might've felt for me, you're still gonna marry me."
"That's what I said I'm going to do, that's what I'm going to do."
Robert felt a crushing sense of disappointment. He let her down and he was pretty sure there was no going back. "So is this it for you and me?"
Donna looked off into the distance. "I don't know. I don't know," She said, shaking her head.
"I hate that this is happening." said Robert.
"Me too." said Donna.
The back door opened and Michelle came out, fiddling with a large camera. "Mom, what're you doing?" Asked Donna.
"It's two days left until your wedding. I want engagement photos." She replied cheerily.
"Robert, Donna, come," She said, motioning for them to stand with their backs to the house. They did as she said, and stood there awkwardly.
"Come on Donna, touch him, he's your husband." She said, clueless as to the fraying relationship between them.
Donna squeezed her eyes shut and swallowed her pride, leaning into Robert and placing her hands on his muscular shoulders. This was so wrong.
"Now Robert, hold her like you never want to let her go." She instructed.
Robert looked down at Donna and put his arms around her. She buried her face in his chest, almost like she was trying not to see him.
Michelle frowned and spoke. "Guys come on, these are your engagement pictures. These are the ones you're gonna wanna look back on. You two look like you're going to a funeral."
Donna sighed. "I'm sorry, Mom, we're just tired. Jack kept us up until four in the morning."
"Well perk up, I want your pictures to be perfect."
Robert took a deep breath and leaned Donna back, kissing her deeply as he heard the camera click. Tomorrow would be the eve of their wedding, might as well get used to putting on a show now.
