Chapter Twenty
In the truck, Robert and Donna sat for a moment. "So to the farm?" She suggested.
"Actually, I was thinking we could go buy wedding rings." He said.
"I thought we didn't have any money." said Donna. Robert pulled the check from his pocket and handed it to her. "Seven hundred dollars? They're giving us seven hundred dollars?" She asked, sounding surprised.
"Your dad said it's for rings and a cake." He replied. "I figured why don't we go today and get some rings?"
"Okay," said Donna, looking out the window.
Robert had driven several miles into town to the nearest department store and went with Donna, Mark, and Delilah to the jewelry counter. As they walked, Donna watched several young families, much like theirs, out doing weekend food shopping. Maybe someday they would reach a place where all the feelings of being forced to love one another would subside, and they could have a family of their own. The kind of families like the ones she saw here today.
"So, Donna Hess?" said Robert, breaking her out of her thoughts. Instinctively she turned around, looking at her fiancée and future adoptive children. Hearing her name said that way, kind of made her feel proud of what they were building together. No matter what the cost, she felt like she belonged here, with this family.
"Hm?" She asked. "Did you decide on our name change situation?" He asked as they neared the counter. "Donna Hess, Donna Beaumont-Hess..." He named.
"What do you think? What do you like better?" She asked.
"Honestly, I like Beaumont-Hess. For both of us." Robert answered.
"Robert and Donna Beaumont-Hess." She tested. "Okay, you sold me. I like it. But why would you want to add my name to yours?"
"Because this is something we're in together. It should be equal on all sides." He said, leaning back against the glass case.
"Beaumont-Hess it is, then." Donna said with a smile.
It was then that an attendant came up to the counter. "How can I help you today?" She asked with a smile.
"Uh, do you have any of those pre-made rings, the ones that are like, pretty cheap?" Asked Robert, hoping she knew what he meant.
"We keep those on the back wall there." She said, pointing to the back wall of the jewelry department where several gold and silver rings, some with stones and some without, were nestled into slots on a velvet backing.
"Thanks," said Robert, heading towards the wall followed by Donna and the kids.
"Which one do you like?" He asked, his eyes scanning over the collection before them.
Donna looked over the women's side, until her eyes landed on a silver ring with a blue topaz stone set in the middle. "I like this one here." She said, pointing to it. Robert came over to see.
"Blue topaz, you know what that is right? That's my birthstone." He said with a grin. Of course she already knew that.
"I know," She replied with a smile. "I wanted to wear your stone." Robert took it off the backing and placed it over her finger. Just like he would on their wedding day.
"It fits, that's a good sign." He said, smiling at her. "Do you see one you like?" Asked Donna, taking a quick glance at the Men's rings. "I'll find one," He assured, taking hers off of her finger.
"I'll hold this, you go up to the customer service counter and cash this," He said, handing her the check. "Then I'll find one, and we have rings."
