Chapter Three
Meanwhile, in the yard, Robert and Donna kept meeting each other's eyes and looking away. Clearly there was an elephant in the room they were both trying to avoid.
Robert could only think about how getting married could very well steal their futures from them. Images flicked through his mind, mostly of him and Donna being much older, and Mark and Delilah being grown up and moved out. In each of these images, he and Donna looked at each other with great despise whenever their eyes met.
Donna, on the other hand, thought about the immediate future. She loved Delilah and Mark with all her heart and she wanted them to stay, no matter the cost.
After they caught each other's glimpses for the fifth time, Robert spoke.
"Uh, hey, why don't you two see if there's any lemonade left?"
"Okay," said Delilah, as both kids reached out to be taken off of Experience's back. Once they were down, they ran to the back door and let themselves in the house.
Donna drew in a shaky breath and wouldn't look at Robert. She grabbed Experience's reigns and began leading the horse back to its barn.
"Did you wanna say something?" Robert asked, unable to look at her as well.
"Uh...no. You?" Asked Donna. "No." Robert replied with a shrug, both clearly lying.
Later that night, while Robert and the kids slept over at Michelle's invitation, Donna tossed and turned in her bed. She kept thinking of her own parent-less past, and about Robert's parents, Lynette and Todd. It wasn't fair to them for her to let the kids be taken from their own home.
Donna sighed heavily and sat up in her bed. She got up and walked to her bedroom door, where her denim coat hung on the back, and pulled her keys out of its pocket. Donna pulled the keys off of their ring, and retreated to her bed.
In the dark, she turned the ring over in her hand a few times. She knew what she had to do tomorrow.
