Chapter Thirty Six
Donna woke up first, beneath two children clinging to her side and a dog that made a home of her lap. Beside her laid Robert, face down against his pillow, still asleep. She thought about yesterday and how Beau had come to their house, confessing he'd had feelings for her. She couldn't lie, but deep down inside she always had feelings for him too and she always would. But they became the feelings of a good friendship, no longer those of an unrequited teenaged crush.
Her mind wandered to brunch, where she'd told her parents she no longer planned on going to college. She still wanted to, in fact, she was still waiting on some admission letters that were supposed to be coming any day now, but this was real life. This was where she was supposed to be.
She gently scooted Jack off her lap, and slipped out from underneath Mark and Delilah's arms, before getting out of bed and tiptoeing downstairs.
In the kitchen, she'd plugged in the toaster and started on breakfast. As she listened to the hum of vibrating quartz warming the bread, she leaned back against the counter and allowed her mind to drift on to her and Robert, and Beau and Jean. A real love rectangle...She thought.
Donna and Robert were just kids and Jean was too. Beau was an adult who had found himself regretting an ages-old decision that broke two hearts, and now Donna and Robert were suddenly dropped into the middle of a falsehearted marriage and custody battle with the state. No one could really be blamed for their part. It was just a bad situation for all involved and somewhere, in some way, someone was going to get hurt.
The toaster popped and as she reached for the bread, she caught a glimpse of the ring on her finger. She took the bread out of the toaster and then grabbed her wedding ring, giving it the lightest pull until it came off. She put it down on the counter and rested her face against her hands.
Donna knew that the kids were the utmost priority, and that she and Robert needed to just put everything else away and be the closest thing to parents they could be.
Robert came down the stairs, rubbing his eyes. "You're up early," He commented when he saw her.
"Yeah, I figured I'd start on breakfast." She replied, taking the plates and putting them on the table.
Robert entered the kitchen and said, "Maybe there are some advantages to this."
Donna laughed. "Yeah I agree."
As he came up behind her, he noticed her ring on the counter, then looked up at her, to find her looking right back.
