Chapter Thirteen
After a morning of rock-like toast and Saturday morning cartoons with the kids, Donna and Robert were preparing to make a trip back to the farm.
"Are you gonna bring your papers with you or come back and get them?" Asked Donna, putting on her boots.
"Probably just bring them with me." said Robert, looking for his keys.
"Do you know which ones you need?" Questioned Donna.
"Yeah, birth certificate, my license, and social security card." He said, finding the aforementioned keys.
"How do you know that?"
"I was the ring bear at my parents' wedding." He said with a grin, as Donna looked at him wide-eyed and grinning herself. Learn something new everyday. She thought.
Robert pulled his shoes on, and opened his wallet, looking inside. "I just gotta find my birth certificate." He said, going up the stairs.
He walked up to the door that had been closed since his parents' death. He couldn't bear looking into their empty room that first week, and neither could the kids, so he'd went in only to chase Jack off the bed, and then closed the door, not really intending to open it again.
But here he was, standing on the other side of the piece of mahogany separating him from the room, his hand on the knob. Nothing ever came easy, did it? He had to go in the room full of reminders, to get documents needed for a license for a marriage fate and circumstance had forced upon him and Donna.
Robert opened the door and entered. The sunlight beamed through the window, illuminating the beige color scheme of the bed, and capturing dust particles in its iridescence. Perhaps the only thing breaking up the otherwise stale atmosphere of the room. On the back of the door was a black dress, a new one his mother had bought and never got the chance to wear. He touched the soft satiny fabric of the dress, envisioning what it would of looked like, had she been able to.
He then turned and made his way to the closet, where their birth documents had been kept in a large binder, adorned with duct tape and marked 'Family.' Robert grabbed the binder and opened it, flipping through the plastic clip-in pages, until he'd found his birth certificate, pulling it out and heading for the door. In that moment, Jack had skittered by his feet and up onto the bed.
The poor dog had waited in Todd's spot everyday up until Robert had closed it off, clearly expecting his owners to return someday. "I know, buddy. I miss them too." He said, putting the binder back and picking Jack up. He'd closed the door, and placed the dog on the floor of the hallway, going back down the stairs.
"Is everybody ready?" He asked. "Shoot, wait, is it Saturday? Don't they close on Saturday?"
"No, they're closed on Sunday. On Saturday it's just limited hours. That's why we should get a move on." Donna answered.
Robert nodded and went to help Delilah tie her shoes. When he was finished, the four of them left, heading out to the truck.
The group had arrived back at the farm, and Donna got out, running for the door. She went to the door, and let herself in.
"You're back, is everything alright?" Asked Michelle. "Yeah, it's fine Mom, just we decided to get our marriage license today, and I was, uh, wondering if you and Dad would sign it as our witnesses."
"Well look at you two, doing what needs to be done." commented Michelle with a smile. "Of course we'll sign it. But why do you seem like you're in a hurry?"
"Because we just remembered today's Saturday, and they close early on Saturdays." She explained.
Michelle looked at Bill. "Just a minute, we'll be right out, sweetheart." She said to Donna.
"And do you know where my birth certificate and my social security card are?" Asked Donna. "Birth certificate is in the file cabinet in our room, and I think your social security card should be there too."
"Thanks Mom." said Donna, rushing up the stairs. She opened the top drawer of the file cabinet and pulled random papers out, until she'd found the two documents she was looking for, and ran back out, leaving the drawer open.
Donna came back out to the truck and got in, and moments later Bill and Michelle appeared, locking the door behind them and getting in there own red pickup truck.
Robert, Donna, Mark, and Delilah arrived outside the County Clerk's office, followed by Michelle and Bill. On the way up the steps, Robert had slipped his hand into Donna's. He had feelings for Jean, and she wanted children he was pretty sure he couldn't give her, but, here they were.
