Chapter Seventeen
The four had returned home after another day's work. The field had taken awhile to plow and the kids had already had dinner at the farm, so Donna and Robert went to work getting them to bed.
Donna had been standing behind the two in the bathroom as they brushed their teeth. "Now you can rinse." She said, to which they obliged. When they were finished, they followed her to Delilah's room.
"Alright little girl, are you ready for bed?" She asked. Delilah nodded and climbed into her all-pink bed, drawing the blankets up to her chin. "Do you want anything before you go to sleep?" Asked Donna.
Delilah shook her head. "And you're sure you don't want to sleep with your brother and me?"
"No thank you." said Delilah, grabbing her rabbit plushy that Robert had won for her from a crane machine a few years back. "Alright, well, your brothers and I love you. Goodnight, Delilah. Mark, say goodnight to your sister."
"Goodnight, Delilah," He said. "Goodnight, Mark, and Donna." said Delilah. Mark went ahead to his room, and Donna prepared to follow him, turning Delilah's light out. Before she could close the door, Delilah's sleepy voice called to her.
"Donna?"
"Yes?"
"Thank you for letting us stay." She said, and Donna's heart melted. She still didn't love Robert, and she was still reluctant to marry him, but she would do it a hundred times over for these two kids.
"You don't have to thank me. It's what I'm here for," She replied, smiling to herself in the dark.
After putting Mark to bed, Donna went to Robert's room. He'd taken off his shirt and was in the process of changing into a tank top and shorts when she came in. "Do you know what your sister just said to me?" She said, still smiling.
"What?"
"She said 'Thank you for letting us stay.' " Donna quoted as she sat on the bed.
"Yeah, they're pretty thankful for you. And you know, I am too." said Robert as he quickly ran a comb through his hair before joining her on the bed.
"I didn't think anything could turn around again after losing Mom and Dad. And I was sure they couldn't after Uncle Bob told me he wasn't gonna take them and CPS said I couldn't. But you turned it around." He explained as they leaned against the pillows.
"Thank you Robert." She said, kissing his cheek before sliding down under the blankets. Robert turned the lights out, and wrapped his arms around her, feeling her breathe.
NOTE: Sorry this is kind of a short filler chapter! Longer ones to come!
