Chapter Nineteen

"Robert," said Jean, gently shaking the hand she was holding.

"Huh?" He asked, still staring at the window.

"Go back to your wife, and love her," She said, taking the ring from his palm and slipping it back onto his finger.

"Y-yeah, I should do that, shouldn't I?" He struggled to say, standing up.

                                "Yes you should." said Jean.

Robert despondently walked back to the house, and let himself in. He removed his shoes and went up the stairs to his open room. As he slipped back into the bed, Donna stirred.

"Hmmm...where have you been?" She asked sleepily, pulling the blankets up to her nose.

"Um, I was outside." He replied. He had no intention of telling her that he'd taken his ring off, and went to see his other love.

                                "Is everything okay?" She asked.

"Yeah, everything's fine now." said Robert.

"I have to get up,  it's time to go to Church." She said, sitting up.

Church? Thought Robert. He'd been a religious man himself, but he was not by any means a Churchgoer. That was more The Beaumonts' domain. Still, if it was important to her, it was going to be important to him. Every Sunday for the rest of his life...

Robert pulled up to the white building with a large steeple looming amongst the clouds. The loud bells rang, calling Worshippers from all around. He scanned the parking lot until he found Donna's parents' truck, and parked beside them.

"Robert, if you don't want to go, it's fine. I know that Church isn't really your thing." She said, placing her hand on his leg.

"I know, but I'm here because I want to be. I need to be." He said, getting out.

Seated in one of the front pews, Robert found his thoughts fading out as the Reverend spoke. It had felt like someone's hand was squeezing his heart and his throat consecutively. This was it, this was his life now.

Behind them he could see several elderly people, their stony faces seemingly ancient. They'd been coming here all their lives and would continue to do so until their deaths. Could he really do this? Did he have all it would take to be a devoted husband, father, and member of the community?

He closed his eyes, desperately attempting to silence his inner thoughts and focus on the single voice ringing out amongst the quiet.

When the hour was over, Donna took Mark and Delilah with her as she spoke to the Reverend and his wife, just catching up. Robert took a deep breath and made his way out of the room, deciding he would bring the truck up to the curb.

He stood up and walked out, going straight to the truck and climbing in the driver's side. He sat there, alone with his racing thoughts, unsure of how to go on with his current state of life. Donna wasn't asking him to participate in her routine, he'd insisted on it, because it was only fair.

There was a knock on the window and he turned to see Bill. Robert rolled the window down. "I wanted to thank you for coming with my daughter today." Said Bill.

"Of course I came, she's my wife. Or, gonna be my wife." said Robert.

"Yeah but it means a lot to her that you're here. Some things are important to Donna, and Church is one of them."

"I can see that," Replied Robert.

"I wanted to give you this." said Bill, reaching in his pocket and pulling out a slightly-creased paper. It appeared to be a check. He handed it to Robert, who looked it over. It was indeed a check, from Bill and Michelle, made out to him, for seven hundred dollars.

                                  "Thanks Sir, what-what's this for?"

"I want you to make her happy. I know it isn't much, but I thought you could at least buy cheap wedding rings, and get a cake from the grocery store. Anything that's left, consider it a newlywed gift."

"Thank you so much, I'll be sure to get her a nice ring." said Robert, putting it in his pocket.

"Well, no day like today." said Bill. "Here she is."

Robert turned around to see Donna with the kids and Michelle. "Alright kids, we'll see you tomorrow," said Michelle, kissing Donna's forehead.

"Bye Mom and Dad," said Donna, walking to the backseat of the truck and helping Delilah get in.

No day like today, He echoed in his mind.
