Chapter Nine
Donna exited her house and got in the truck. Robert pulled out and drove to the hotel, where the Hess kids' Uncle Bob and Aunt Ginny were staying.
It was a small white building, with an upper and a lower level, eight red doors for each, and joined together by an outdoor metal staircase.
Donna climbed out and helped Delilah down, following Robert to the door marked by a gold E.
He knocked and the door opened. Before them stood Uncle Bob, wearing a crushed velvet purple suit, his dark brown hair slicked back. His matching mustache was impeccably groomed. Uncle Bob was the kind of man who would wear a suit grocery shopping, and cufflinks to a barbecue.
"Kids!" He greeted cheerily. "Donna!"
"Hey Uncle Bob," said Robert. "Can we come in? I have something to tell you."
Uncle Bob's smile dropped, and Donna could see him mouth the words. "Is it about the kids?"
Robert shook his head. "Come in, is everything okay?" Asked Uncle Bob, stepping out of the way to let them in.
"Everything's fine. Better, actually." said Robert, as he came in. Aunt Ginny was seated on the room's small loveseat, packing a large suitcase when she looked up from it and smiled.
"Hi Delilah. Mark," She greeted, a large smile with sympathetic undertones crinkling the aged skin on the sides of her lips.
"Hi Aunt Ginny." said Delilah. Mark gave a similar greeting.
"You caught us in time. We were just about finished packing." said Uncle Bob, gesturing to the already-packed suitcases on the floor.
"I know, that's why we're here so early. I came because I wanted to tell you that Donna and I, are getting married." said Robert.
"Really? That's good. I'm glad for you two." said Uncle Bob. "Oh! Joy! Donna I'm so happy for you, you're gonna make a beautiful bride!" Exclaimed Aunt Ginny in her thick Italian accent, and squeezing Donna's hand bone-crushingly hard.
"Thank you, Aunt Ginny." said Donna, a little uncomfortable. The poor woman had no idea that this wasn't to be a declaration of undying love, rather a courthouse pronunciation for legal purposes.
"Are you sure, though? It's just that you're both so young, and Robert, your parents..." said Uncle Bob, not wanting to bring it up in front of the kids.
"Yes, I'm sure. I've never been more sure of anything in my life. We're gonna get married sometime this month." Explained Robert.
Uncle Bob stepped forward and looked deep into Robert's eyes. "And why this rush? " He asked, looking in Donna's direction.
Robert put his hand on Uncle Bob's shoulder, and nodded toward the other side of the room. They walked over, and he whispered, "We're doing it for the kids. If I'm married, they'll let me adopt them."
"And Donna knows this?" Whispered Uncle Bob. "She does. It was her idea actually." said Robert.
"You'd be doing your parents proud, Nipote." He said. Uncle Bob's pet name for Robert had been the Italian word for 'Nephew' for as long as he could remember.
"Thanks, Uncle Bob." He said. "We have to go, now. The last time we were home I left a big pan of food for Jack and I'm pretty sure he's finished by now."
"Alright, stay safe and be good. And invite us to the wedding." said Uncle Bob, grinning beneath his mustache. "You know we will." said Robert, as they walked to the door.
"Say goodbye to Aunt Ginny." said Donna to Mark and Delilah. "Goodbye, Aunt Ginny." said Delilah.
"Bye, Aunt Ginny." said Mark quietly. Aunt Ginny waved, still smiling largely. Donna, Robert, Mark, and Delilah left the room, and went back out to the parking lot.
Once in the truck, Robert put it in drive and headed for home.
