Chapter Forty Four

"Oh, Robert," Whispered Jean, as tears began to fall from her eyes. She lifted his head from her shoulder and kissed his cheek. "Oh, Robert, what're we gonna do?"

Robert looked up at her, his brown eyes sparkling with sadness. "I don't know." He replied, looking away from her.

"I think you should leave, or, I should. As long as we're close like this, we're  gonna keep feeling the same, and this is gonna keep happening." She explained, her voice never getting higher than a hoarse whisper.

                                         "Don't leave, please don't. I can't-I can't have you do that."

"Don't you see? You can't walk away from me, just-just like I can't walk away from you."

"You're right. I can't." He said. "But Jean, I married her. I married her to keep the kids, what could I do about that?"

"I don't have that answer. You do, in your heart. The only thing I can do, is tell you that if you want my heart, you've got it." She said. "I tried to do what's right, I tried to stay away from you since the day I broke up with you, and damn it, I can't pretend anymore. If you want to still be with her, I'll walk away, for good. But if you want to be with me, you have to do what's right and divorce her."

Robert just nodded silently. He knew she was right. He was the only one who could answer this question. And he had to let someone go.

"Now go, Robert. Go back to your life." She said, standing up and pulling him up off the couch by his hands. He took one look at her, and then walked down the hall to the door, letting himself out.

As he walked through her lawn, the same car he'd seen days earlier pulled into the driveway, and his wife got out of the passenger side, a smile on her face. From the driver's side window, Beau gave Robert a satisfied glance, and backed out. Donna looked up at Robert, her smile dropping when she noticed he was standing on the lawn adjacent to theirs.

Robert looked back at her, as she brushed the bruise on her neck with her fingertips. "I-I got us the third reference." Said Donna, trying to change the subject.

"I did too." He said, walking over to her, putting his arm around her shoulder. The pair headed inside together, even though in their hearts they were miles apart.
