Chapter Fifty Three

Robert had been driving, Donna beside him and the kids in the back. In her hands she held the adoption certificate the court printed up.

"Can you believe it Robert? We're finally a family." Said Donna breathlessy.

"Yeah, we finally are." He replied, watching the road ahead.

"And all the things before with Beau and Jean. They don't matter anymore. Bygones are bygones." She mused.

Robert just nodded along. "Yep. Bygones are bygones. There's no one but you and me now."

When they reached home, he pulled into the parking lot and put the truck in park. In the driveway beside them pulled Jean's car. He watched for a moment as she got out, keeping her eyes down the whole time, and headed inside.

"Robert," Whispered Donna, putting her hand on his shoulder.

"Yeah?" He whispered, turning to look at her.

"That part's over now." She whispered back. He knew what she meant by that. She was expecting him to let Jean go. To turn her out for good this time. Robert looked up in the rearview mirror, at the kids playing with their plastic horse toys in the back, never looking happier.

In that moment, he made the decision. The decision not to care for Jean anymore, no matter how much it would hurt her. "I know." He replied, getting out.
