Chapter Fifty
As night once again fell on the Beaumont-Hess house, Robert and Donna climbed into their shared bed. Robert lightly stroked Donna's shoulder with his fingertips. He always liked her, always admired her, but he never actually loved her. He knew what the Beaumonts trusted him to be to their daughter. A loving husband who would make her happy, the husband who would cure all of her sorrows. And the husband who would give her a forever home. But at the same time, it was like they were asking him to turn his true love away. To abandon her when she needed him the most. Nothing in his life was making sense anymore.
Donna laid on her side, eyes open. She felt Robert's fingers on her skin, but she just wanted him to stop. Her mind was filled with the words her mother had said. You need to be honest for you, and for him.
She caught sight of her ring twinkling in the dark. Tomorrow was their court hearing for adoption. The last thing that was needed for Mark and Delilah to legally become their adoptive son and daughter.
One more day. She thought to herself. Get through one more day, and then tell him the truth.
Robert removed his hand from her shoulder and rolled over onto his side. Donna looked down at the stone of her ring one last time, it's blue iridescence dancing under the faint gleam of the moonlight. She slipped it off her finger and placed it on the table beside her bed before closing her eyes.
