Exit If You Dare
~CRYSTAL'S POV~
Patrick and I had become closer ever since that day. We'd talk more often - no more hours of silence, thank goodness. There was only one problem - we had run out of food and water.
We had searched every inch of the workhouse for anything edible to no avail. there were mice, but neither of us had the heart to consider them food. One day, we were hungry and thirsty, when:
"Should we go outside and look for food?" Patrick suggested.
"It's dangerous."
"It's even more dangerous to go without eating."
Good point, I thought. I sighed. "Fine. This isn't a good idea, but I guess there's nothing else we can do."
"It'll be okay. There's nothing out there that can hurt us."
"How do you know?"
"I don't, but a wise person once told me that as long as I have you and you have me, we'll be okay," he said, smiling. I chuckled softly.
"That's true," I said. "We need to stay together, though."
"Deal," Patrick said. "Let's go see what we can find."
"Alright," I said, "Sure."
We walked down the stairs to the big iron doors and pushed one open. The vast, dead Earth and stormy skies spanned out before us. It was as heartbreaking as it had been a month ago.
I looked at Patrick and he looked back at me. "It's gonna be okay. There's nothing out there we can't handle," he said. He entwined my fingers with his and taking a deep breath, we took our first step out into the scary, unsafe dullness of this new world.
And possibly our last.
The dead, unnatural earth was cold. We walked and walked out of a shared false hope in a straight line, keeping an eye out for anything other than clouds of dust. We walked some more, our faith slowly decreasing. Then, we started to get tired. We started to get hungrier. but our exhaustion was short-lived.
We were just thinking of turning back when something struck the back of my head. The last thing I remember was the world spinning before everything went black.
