Chapter 10
To say that the lacrosse game right now against Devonford Prep is intense is an understatement. Although every game against a different school is interesting, this one is different. Well, maybe it is only for Liam and the ones who know that the ones they're playing against is his former school. I'm also extra worried since the killer on the team is definitely out there. So it's probably only me in the audience who's scared for her friends' life.
When a player from Devonford scores the first goal in the scrimmage tonight, the bleachers filled with students from Beacon Hills High School give a collective sigh.
"I'm so confused," Lacey, the girl behind me says. I don't see her as much as I thought I would due to the fact that we only have a few trainings and only one class together. It turns out that this school doesn't take cheerleading as seriously as I wanted it to. Surprisingly, I don't mind that much with everything going on at the moment.
"The other school just scored," I inform her with a small smile.
"Why did you two drag me out here?"
"Because," begins Stella who sits next to her. "You said you wanted to go out. And you wanted to see cute boys. Since I felt like watching this game tonight, I brought you here."
I laugh at the two girls bickering before facing the front once again to pay attention to what's happening. Now, Scott misses his chance as Brett scoops up the ball from the ground and dodges my cousin, running off to our net. Scott continues to catch up as Liam tries to help. He runs over but two Devonford players purposely block him, sending him to the ground. While that happens, Brett scores the second goal for his school.
I can hear the rest of the crowd go 'ooooh' at what just occurred to Liam and because the opposing team got yet another point. Mason and Violet cringe together with me as we wait for what happens next. Suddenly, Liam roughly gets up from the ground with the two players before him. He shoves off his helmet, throws down his gloves, and glares fiercely.
I gulp, having an idea of what'll happen next. "Oh shit," is all I can say.
Liam lunges at the two guys before him, but fortunately, Scott and Stiles are there in time to hold him back until he settles down. The boys from Devonford look surprised at first, but they walk away right after.
"He's got to chill or else they're gonna bench him," Mason comments thoughtfully. I give a nod of agreement and soon, Liam seems to calm down, shrugging the hands of Scott and Stiles off of him.
Players from both teams spread out to take a breath as the referee places the ball back on the ground. It's Stiles' turn now, and from here, you can tell that he's making small talk with the player he's against. He is amazingly able to get the ball before the other guy does and runs away, skillfully passing it to another player: Kira.
"Yes!" I exclaim quietly.
Kira freezes for a moment, looking back and forth at Stiles and to the ball in her lacrosse stick. She finally moves after a while, moving out of the way of the others who try to block her or make her miss her shot.
"Pass it!" Coach Finstock orders loudly over the noise. "Kira, pass the ball!"
I don't know if she can't hear him or she just doesn't want to listen, but Kira shoots the ball and scores the first point for Beacon Hills High School. The crowd erupts into cheers, some even standing up to clap. I whoop loudly along my friends, glad that the gap of points between the other team is closing.
Kira and the rest of this school's team members punch the air or jump around in excitement. She even runs over to Scott but they are interrupted by the coach.
"Yukimura!" Finstock yells, sounding displeased. Uh oh.
This time, Kira obeys her coach and jogs over to him, a smile still seen on her face through that helmet that she soon takes off. I can't hear anymore what Finstock saying since he's speaking in a quieter tone, but he points to the side and that's all I know. Kira talks back but once again, it's hard to hear what they're both talking about. Once again, Finstock motions to the side and it only takes a second for me to realize that he's probably benching her for the remainder of the game. My suspicions are confirmed when Kira sadly makes her way to the bench with the other members of the lacrosse team.
My jaw drops a bit as I attempt to register what I just saw. I turn to Mason, astonished. "He just benched her," I say.
"What?" he says disbelievingly, looking past me to glance at Kira.
"That's totally unfair."
"I know," Mason frowns.
"Must be because she didn't listen to what Finstock was saying..."
"True. She got a good shot, though. It was an open one..."
I turn back to focus on the game. The same thing happens: one of the players manages to get the ball from the ground first, he runs, the others try to steal it, the rest of the players help, the ball passes over and over.... and then all of a sudden, a few of them collide forcefully, and one of them so happens to be Liam.
I gasp loudly and clap my hands to my mouth. Mason and Violet gasp in shock as well as Liam and the other player bounce off of each other and fall back to the ground; it looks extremely painful. It becomes obvious that it is as soon as two cries of pain come from the field.
All players, the coaches, and the referee who blows his whistle for a time-out, come running into the scene. While Scott and Stiles rush to help Liam up to his feet, the other player seems like needs a lot of help as he continues to lay down on the grass, groaning. My eyes go back to the group of people I should be watching out for on the field and they now look to be in deep conversation.
"Is he alright?" Mason asks worriedly.
"I hope so," I say, fidgeting in my seat, still watching the three boys curiously. For some reason, Scott takes off his gloves and does something to Liam's arm but from this view, it's difficult to tell what he did and why. The injured guy from Devonford gets assistance from his teammate and the referee. They hoist him up and have to drag him out of the field. Everyone takes quite a while to settle down as they all spread out in the field again but Liam walks over to coach. Scott soon follows his Beta but keeps a safe distance.
I then remember that not only do I have to keep an eye out for the boys, but also Violet since she's the girlfriend of our main suspect. I turn to my side and my eyes widen instantly. She is no longer in the seat next to me.
Scott, Kira, and Liam are now assembled on the side of the field, actually very close to where I sit. Good timing. I immediately get up from my seat.
"I'll be back," I inform Mason and the two girls behind him.
"Where are you going?" I hear Lacey ask first, but ignore her and jog over to the my cousin and the others.
"I'm out for the rest of the game," Liam was saying as I approach the three.
"What're you gonna do?" asks Kira, glancing up at Scott.
"I don't know," he sighs, looking around anxiously. "Something's still not right. We're missing something."
"Sorry, but where's Garrett?" I question as I go to stand next to Liam.
"He's still out there," Liam answers for me.
"Did he miss?"
"Seems like it. But I think we're sure it's him now," says Scott.
"You think?" I raise my eyebrows. All I get in response from him is a sheepish expression. "Well, if this helps," I start. "His girlfriend's missing, too. Violet's suddenly gone."
They all exchange worried looks after my statement. "So-"
"Guys," Stiles suddenly cuts in, appearing out of nowhere. He goes in between Kira and Liam, holding his phone out in front of him. He seems fidgety, to be honest. "Lydia just broke another third of the list."
"Am I on it?" Liam asks at once.
"No... But someone else is."
"Who is it?" I say in anticipation. As if it's for effect, Stiles pauses for a few seconds as we all wait for him to speak.
"Brett." Despite all the noise, it seems so silent among the five of us just standing there as we take in this new piece of information.
"I gotta go," announces Scott. He leaves us in a hurry, not even giving any of us a chance to speak up. He passes by many people as he quickly runs out of the field in order to look for the assassins.
"You," Stiles then points to Liam, Kira, and I. "You all stay here." And with that, he goes running out just like Scott, but stumbles many times along the way.
"What do we do now?" Kira asks frantically.
I sigh, looking at where both Scott and Stiles ran off to. "We wait."
With no choice but to do just that, Kira sighs as well and walks over to an empty seat away from us. I decide to leave her in her own thoughts and go over to a separate empty bench. Liam follows after and takes a seat next to me, looking troubled.
"How are you?" I ask slightly awkwardly.
He cracks a small smile. "How are you?" he repeats. "That's a bit odd for you to say."
I roll my eyes. "I'm not gonna ask if you're okay, unless you want to. So, are you okay?"
"Well, to answer your question, yes, I'm okay," Liam shrugs. "I'm doing great. You know, just survived a game with a murderer, sort of injured myself and someone else, and now my Alpha and his friend are looking for that killer."
"This is exactly why it's better to ask how you are than asking if you're okay," I grin at the boy, nudging him lightly.
"Sorry." He smiles sheepishly.
"It's alright," I reply, a small smile on my lips. "I'd feel the same way if I were in your situation."
"Hey guys," a different voice says. Both Liam and I turn to look for the person, and behind us stands Mason. "Liam, you alright?"
"I'm fine," he says lightly.
"I heard coach is calling off the game," Mason says, plopping down next to his friend.
"Really?" says Liam. I don't think he really minds.
"Yeah, someone's gonna-"
Just before Mason can finish his statement, the referee on the field blows the whistle as Devonford scores the next point. He doesn't do it for the point, though. Like we suspected, the referee announces that the game is over due to some circumstances.
Everyone looks confused and sounds annoyed based on what I can see and hear as I observe. Some start to leave while others stay to wait for more, but they look very impatient to say the least.
"Boys, to the locker rooms!" shouts Finstock, madly pointing to the direction of where he wants them to be. "Get changed everyone!"
At once, the team shuffles off to the locker rooms with Finstock closely behind.
"I'll see you guys later," Liam mutters distractedly, standing up and heading to the locker area as well.
When he's gone, I say, "Well that was a pretty weird game."
"Agreed," Mason says, nodding. "Do you have any idea what's going on? I'm really confused."
"Nope," I lie. "I don't know what's going on at all, either."
