The Riddler~Chapter 37
Ana's pale blue lips spread into a smile as she approached the blonde. "Barbara, it's been far too long."
The other blonde's eyebrows shot up so far that they nearly joined her hairline. "Yeah, no kidding. I mean, I knew you and that nerd were together, but I mean..." Barbara gestured vaguely at Ana's stomach. Ana instinctively moved her arm as Ed joined them.
"That nerd is right here. I'll allow you to call me Ed because we have a history but my name is The Riddler."
"So the headlines say," Barbra stated with a smile.
The green-clad supervillain wrapped an arm around his fiancée. As Barbara started off again, the warmth faded from Ana's eyes and was replaced with a firm permafrost.
"You can't." The words left her mouth before she could process them.
Barbara kept her fake painted smile plastered on her face. "Why ever not, Frosty? I, mean unless you know something we don't." The flirtatious words were posed as an open invitation, but the meta-human wasn't budging.
For the first time, Barbara understood why the woman had earned the nickname Killer Frost. Her ice-blue eyes seemed to glint like daggers even in the poor lighting of the warehouse. All emotions had been drained from her face, leaving nothing for her or even Edward Nygma to work with.
She crossed her arms and ignored their inquisitive gazes. "I know they're dangerous and very influential, and that's enough."
Ed's warmer hand brushed some of her hair off of her forehead. Even through his leather gloves, he could feel how cold her skin had gotten.
Ed and Barbara shared a look before the blonde tilted her head slightly. "Well, if you change your minds, you know where to find me."
It was silent besides the click of her heels as the blonde sauntered off. Ed waited a moment or two before letting go and turning to face her. "As much as I hate to admit this, Barbara's right. You know something."
The air in the room was significantly colder now. A puff of white air left her blue lips as she exhaled sharply. "If I tell you what I know, will you leave it?"
The look in his eyes yelled "no" as clear as day, but she caved anyways. "Promise me that nothing I say will leave this room."
The Riddler's dark eyes glinted dangerously in the muted lighting. "I promise."
Killer Frost let out a shaky breath. "They call themselves the Court of Owls. In all honesty, I only know everything I'm about to tell you because of Bruce."
He tried to soften his gaze with a smile, but was unsuccessful. Ed was the emotional one, after all. The Riddler was simply here to help Ed gain power. "How did Brucie know?"
She shifted slightly. She wasn't entirely sure that they weren't listening. "They were the ones that put the hit on his parents."
His smile drops and he instinctively fixes his posture. Ed would never admit it — especially now that he and the Riddler seemed to be integrated —but he had grown rather fond of the two [relatively normal] teens in Ana's care. He rarely interacted with either of them, but he could tell that both children had a particular cleverness to them.
Ed's smile had disappeared. "You're serious." He wasn't joking anymore.
Her blue eyes refuse to meet his gaze. "Unfortunately. I was helping Bruce try to take them down."
Anger and hurt flickered across his face and she winced slightly. "Without telling me?" Ed's lips curled into a snarl. "How are we supposed to get married if we're already lying to each other?"
Ana's crossed arms seemed to tighten their grip around herself. "I didn't know how dangerous it was until it was too late. I'm not saying I did the right thing, but can you honestly tell me you would have let this riddle go if I asked you to?"
"I would have!"
Ana scoffed as tears threatened to fill her eyes. He may mean it now, but she knew him. Edward Nygma would rather die than leave a riddle unsolved. "Then I'm not the only one lying." She pushed herself off of the table she'd been leaning on. "And if you don't want to marry me, then don't."
