Thawed out~ Chapter 43

Five months later:

Ana let out a groan as wailing jerked her awake. She knew being a single mother would be hard, but she hadn't known it would be absolutely nonstop. The blonde sluggishly made her way to the crib.

It took some maneuvering to avoid the snowflake mobile in the dark. "Shh Caitlyn, hunny, it's okay baby. It's okay."

Ana sighed when she realized just what her newborn was fixating on. A sad smile slipped onto her face as she néant down to pick up the shiny green dragon. "Oh, did Ed the dragon fall on the floor? Is that why you're so upset?"

The baby blinked owlishly in response. Ana wondered how Ed would feel knowing that his second favorite 3 piece suit had been repurposed into a stuffed dragon. She could almost hear him complaining in the back of her mind.

Tears stung her eyes. "It's okay, I miss your Daddy too. We'll get him back one day sweetie."

A slow clap caused Ana to jump in the air and instinctively clutch her child closer. "Wow, what touching sentiment. Now, where is he?"

A chill ran down her spine. "I don't know what you're talking about Zsasz. We get to keep living as long as Penguin has him. That was the deal!" In a meeker voice that sounded rather... childlike, she whispered, "He promised."

Now, make no mistake, Ana had not handed over her husband willingly. He was already frozen by the time she'd found him. After that, it was a matter of survival.

"Yeah, but here's the thing: he's missing. So, deal's off."

Her heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean he's missing? What, did he just walk away?"

The assassin shrugs. "Sure looks like it."

Ana took in a steady breathe. "Well, I don't know anything. At this point, I might kill him myself. Now if you excuse me, I have a baby that's clearly upset by your presence to attend to."

Zsasz dramatically placed a gloved hand over his heart. "Ouch, I'm really hurt. Anyways, see y'a!"

Ana let out a shaky breath before turning her attention towards the baby. A slightly unhinged giggle escaped her lips. "Hear that? Daddy'll be coming back to us soon."

~§~

Ed let out a groan. God, my head is killing me. What happened?

As if the answer was obvious, he imagined Ana smiling at him as they danced the night away. His heart skipped a beat. She always looked glorious in white.

His eyes cracked open. "Ana?" The blurry woman looming above him slowly came into focus and he let out a shuddery gasp. That most certainly was not his absolutely fantastic wife and best friend. A burst of desperation and panic burst through him. Why can't I move?

The woman let out a high pitched, bubbly giggle that starkly contrasted against Ana's raspier, more natural chuckle or even Miss Kringle's soft, nervous laugh. Not only was it utterly obnoxious and annoying, but it was almost unnerving in a way. Although, that easily could've been her questionable choice in decor that was setting him on edge.

"No, silly, don't you remember? We went to school together. Eddie it's me, Myrtle Jenkins!" She clapped excitedly as if she had accomplished something spectacular, but it only made Ed more horrified.

"If you really did know me, you'd know my wife is the only one I allow to call me Eddie."

That made her enthusiastic smile drop. "We'll, she isn't exactly loyal, is she? No one's heard from her since you were put on ice. Some think she's the one who did it, you know."

Any fear for himself that melted away into rage. "Don't talk about her like that." Ed's eyes closed as he took in a deep breath and tried to will himself to move to no avail. "How long? How long have I been..."

"Five months."

Ed chocked back a sob. Had Ana had the baby without him being there for her? Was she still pregnant? Was she alive?

He needed to find them. Wherever she was, he would find her. And if one or both were dead? There would be hell to pay.
