Really doing this~ Chapter 41
Ana let out a sigh as she rested her head on the steering wheel. "God, what is happening to us Ed?"
She resisted the urge to tense up as two arms snake around her from behind and pull her flush against the car seat. "I don't know."
Ana wasn't quite sure how they stayed like that. It was the good moments like these where nothing else mattered. The world held still for just a second. She opened her eyes with a soft sigh. "We should go inside. You probably have had enough of jumpsuits."
The Riddler sighed and Ana had to resist squirming as his warm breath hit her neck. "Ok." There was a moment of silence before he sat up, a triumphant smile on his face. "I'm a friendly fruit that likes to meet people. What am I?"
Ana thought to herself for a moment before answering. "A date."
"Correct-a-mundo!" He gestured wildly for a moment before wrapping his arms around her once more. "We haven't been on one since the whole 'sort-of-but-not-really-killing-Penguin' fiasco."
He grinned at their reflection in the mirror of the car. "I could make dinner and we can relax. When it's over, we can talk about us with a level head, hmm?"
Her icy gaze melted slightly at his eager reflection . "That's probably the best idea I've heard all day." She tossed him a teasing look as Ed opened the door for her and held out his hand. "Have you been reading my psychology books again?"
His eyes twinkled as they entered their new place. "Now that would be telling, Doctor Kyle."
The rest of the evening went off without a hitch. They cooked together and joked over dinner as if nothing was wrong. By the time Ed had gotten out of the shower, Ana was sitting on the bed in her blue and white pajamas. "I don't mean to put a damper on the evening, but we still need to talk."
Ed let out a small "I know" as he sat down next to her with baited breath.
Ana sighed slightly as she tried to find the right words. "Ed, it goes without saying that you were and still are my best friend. But we can't deny there's something going on between us." She paused as if expecting him to intervene before she continued. "I'm not sure when it started, hell, it might even trace back to my death, but if we can't work this out soon, then I'm out."
"When you died," Ed attempted to clear his throat to no avail, "when you died, I think a part of me died too. I tried to do as you suggested and move on, but all I could think about was you."
Ana glanced at him encouragingly and her fingers interlaced with his as she attempted to get him to meet her gaze. " Go on. Take your time. I'm right here."
His gaze snapped to meet hers. "But it doesn't always feel like you're here. Sometimes, I feel like I'll open my eyes and you'll be dead in the waters of that stupid pier again!" Ed practically sobs the statement. Instinctively, Ana wraps her arms around him. Ed squeezes his eyes shut as he feels her rubbing circles into his back. "And sometimes," Ed hesitated before continuing in barley a whisper, "sometimes in Arkham, I dreamed that I killed you instead of Miss Kringle. It always felt so real!"
They stay in silence besides Ed's sobs for a while doing nothing but clinging to each other like it was the end of the world.
"You know,"Ana attempted to clear her throat, "I remember Arkham too."
His arms wrapped around her tighter, but he didn't respond. "When I ... woke up, I could barely remember anything." Her voice trembled slightly, but she continued. "Every once in a while I'd see your face, o-or I'd hear your voice but I couldn't remember your name."
"You've never talked about Indian Hill."
Ana shut her eyes tighter. "You've never talked about Arkham. I suppose neither of us wanted to share what was done to us."
Ed shifted slightly against his fiancée. "I know enough to know that killing Strange would bring you as much joy as me killing Oswald."
Ana pulled back finally and gently lifted Ed's chin so he was gazing into her eyes. "Okay, number one: 'killing Oswald' made you a miserable mess, so I'll undoubtedly enjoy killing Strange more. Number two: I do owe him for bringing me back from the dead and fixing me enough to be able to touch you." A sly grin wormed its way onto her face. "But I wouldn't be apposed to tearing him limb from limb."
In that moment, both Ed and the Riddler seemed to flourish in Ana's blood thirsty grin. Her eyes looked even more striking than usual with the pink and blue clashing against each other. Yes, they promised in unison, you'll get your revenge.
A matching smile wormed its way onto his face. "You would look ravishing doing so. I promise, you'll get to kill him. But first, I want to make you my wife."
Ana's grin shifted into something more genuine. "So, we're really doing this?"
Ed's gaze softened as he grasped her hand. "We're really doing this."
