Jail Break~Chapter 40
A/n:
Sorry it took me so long to update! I started college back in September and I barely have time to breathe let alone write. Finals end on the 22nd of December and I don't start again till the 7th of February, so I'll try to update as often as possible during that span. Anyways, enjoy!
The Riddler's eyes gleamed maliciously in the dark of the dungeon-like room. Penguin was alive, that much was evident. That would certainly prove a problem for him and Ana, who most certainly had carved out a spot on the not-so-dead mob boss's hit list, even if it was only through association.
A flicker of anger flared through him. Ana was his and the only person he was willing to share her with was Edward Nygma. No one was going to take her from him. He was going to make that clear when he got out of this dump.
A cold smile crossed his face as Oswald continued to mock him. He was getting out of here, and then he would marry Anastasia Kyle. His smile faltered, even if for just a second. Assuming I can convince her to go through with it in the first place.
Oswald must have taken his expression as a sign of defeat because his taunts were getting more childish. The Riddler growled before snapping angrily. "Enough! You're pathetic, you know that? At least I'm here because I was trying to find out who runs Gotham. You're here because what, I didn't love you back? Get over it!"
Oswald pursed his lips. "Oh, and you aren't? There's a reason you're here and Ana isn't, you know."
His smug expression dropped again. "Yes. Yes, I suppose..." A scowl wormed its way onto his face. "You know, when she found out what I did, it nearly ended our relationship."
Confusion crossed Oswald's face just for a second before it vanished again. "All of Gotham knows it was you who probably made Ana into what she is anyways, so what's your point, Edward?"
Oswald nearly groaned as his former best friend grinned. That's his riddle face.
"What does man love more than life, Fear more than death or mortal strife. What the poor have, the rich require, and what contented men desire. What the miser spends and the spendthrift saves, And all men carry to their graves?" As he spoke, the Riddler's hands flared dramatically to help punctuate certain phrases.
"Nothing."
"Correctomundo. Ana and the baby had nothing to do with everything that went down between us. I'll help you get out of here and in exchange, you leave them out of it."
Hurt and rage bubbled through the shorter man's veins. She was my friend too, and unlike you, I'd never hurt her, Oswald wanted to shout but instead, he inhaled deeply and grit his teeth. "Sounds reasonable enough."
The Riddler walked closer to the bars separating him from his old friend and newfound nemesis. "That means you can only try killing me after she's had the baby. If we keep stressing her..." He trailed off slightly, faltering properly for the first time in forever.
"Fine!" Oswald snarled just in time for the loud clang of the door hitting floor ro echo through the room.
Ana flashed them a sarcastic smile as she waltzed into the room. "That was sweet and all, but we've got to go. I do hope you too don't mind sharing the back seats."
All it took was a simple touch and a tug to break the locks. Ed was practically glowing as his fiancée let him loose. "Have I ever told you I love you?"
Her blue lips seemed to become impossibly thin. "Back.Seat."
Ed deflated slightly and his joyful expression dropped. "Yes ma'am."
She poised one perfectly sculpted eyebrow at her not–so–dead friend. "I trust you'll keep your promise."
Oswald gulps. Right now, he was in position to make demands, and he had no means to protect himself. "Yes, of course, just get me out of here!"
He had no choice but to watch as the lock was frozen and yanked off with ease. "Come on, this way."
They followed her much like lost puppies as she lead the way, although Oswald and Ed both nearly faltered when they walked past the first set of bodies impaled with icicles.
"Here!" Ana exclaimed when they exited the building. Without another word, all three clambered into the car and took off.
It was silent for the first couple of minutes before Ana decided to try breaking the ice. "So, Oswald, is there somewhere you want me to take you?" She hesitated for a second as her eyes found his in the mirror. "Or, if you two can get along, you could always come back with us."
Ed couldn't even begin to describe how relieved he felt when Oswald declined ans they were left all alone.
"Now, then," started Ana as her icy eyes found Ed's in the mirror, "We need to talk."
