Chapter 45

A/n: I'll keep this brief. Sorry it's been forever since updating! I started College and it's low key been kicking my ass since I started haha. Anyways, enjoy!

Ed blinked tiredly at the slightly blurry figure of Ana in the corner of the room as he reached for his glasses. "You're up early."

She turned around with a smile. "Sorry, did I wake you? Daytime's my shift."

He hummed softly. "No. I should probably find out where Grundy wandered off too anyways. Who'll watch..."

Confusion crossed her face for a moment when he mentioned Grundy. "Well, it's good your making friends. And usually Lee or I, but sometimes one of the kids downstairs watches Caitlyn for a bit to give us a break."

Instinctively, he opened his mouth to ask about Maternal leave before his mouth dried up. This was the Narrows, and they weren't exactly known for being 'law abiding citizens.' Ed ran a hand down his face. "Ok. I should be there for the fight and making sure Grundy knows what to do, but I can watch her after that if you leave me a list of things to do."

Ana practically beamed at that and Ed couldn't help but feel like he was the luckiest man in Gotham, even if it was for just a moment. "Ok. I've already fed her, so she should be good for now." Ana brushed some of Ed's hair off of his forehead so she could kiss it. "Get some more sleep. I'll write up that list. Also, your clothes are in one of those boxes. It should be labeled. Also, Selina said she'd be back here for dinner around 6:30."

So lucky, Ed thought to himself. Before she could leave, he grabbed her arm. "Wait, there's um... something I need to tell you."

Ana's eyebrows furrowed a little bit. "Ok."

"I um," Ed started, but cut himself off with a nervous chuckle, "ok, wow, this is harder than I thought it would be. But um, when Oswald put me on ice, it mademenotsmart."

For a second, Ed was worried he'd have to repeat itself, but then her gaze softened and she sat down on the bed, her right hand grasping his. "You must really be an idiot if you think something like this would make me leave you."

And just like that, an invisible damn burst wide open, and Ed pulled her into a hug as he sobbed open-heartedly. Were Ed with anyone else, he would probably be disgusted with his outburst, but this was Ana.

She simply pulled him closer and rubbed circles at the base of his neck. "You're ok, Ed. We're both going to be ok."

The only time Ed had cried this much in his adult life was after Ana's death, he realized with a start. Sure, he had mourned Kristen and Isabella, but he had been with both of them only briefly. Ana had been by his side for as long as he could remember. While Kristen only liked his soft, caring side [after he FINALLY convinced her to go out with him, that is], and Isabella had wanted the exact opposite, Ana excepted all of him.

It probably would've been so easy to for her to reject him after discovering HIM. Despite all the stress they both have probably caused her, she stayed because she loved both of them.

He wasn't sure how long they stayed like that before she finally pulled back and wiped his tears with her thumbs. "Darling, I've got to get going soon, but how about I make you a cup of tea, hmm?"

"That sounds great."

Ana was from the Narrows, born and raised. She had seen her fair share of fights, both in the ring and out, but rarely did they end quiet as quickly after Grundy started to hit back. She couldn't help but pity the guy. Her and Butch hadn't parted on good terms, most people in Gotham rarely do, but they had been friends once.

Perhaps she shouldn't be entertaining Ed's manipulations nearly as much as she was. In fact, Ana was nearly certain she most certainly shouldn't be. However, the extra income was almost enough of a relief to cause her to cry tears of joy. Despite sharing an apartment with Lee, it was still difficult to make ends meet with a new baby.

Ana sighed as she placed the last vial of Grundy's blood [swamp water?] She would let him spin yarns for now, because the fighting gig was relatively harmless for a guy like Grundy. But anything other than that, and Ed would simply have to count her out.

The door to their apartment was open when she got back, just like she knew it would be. Lee and her exchanged who was working for Cherry and who was running the clinic, but they didn't run it at night to give themselves a break. Ana grasped the other woman's shoulder for a moment, lingering perhaps longer than she should have. "I'm going to check in with Caitlyn and Ed, and then I can take over if you want."

Lee nodded absent mindlessly. "Sounds great."

Ed glanced up at her as she entered the room and closed the door behind her. He smiled as he bounced the infant in his arms slightly. "Look, mommy's back."

She smiled and kissed Caitlyn's forehead before kissing him. "How's it going?"

"I think she needs a nap because she's getting a little grumpy, but ok."

As if to prove her Dad's point, Caitlyn jutted her bottom lip out in a pout and seemed close to tears. Ana playfully matched her expression. "Come on sweetie, let's get you to bed darling."

Ed didn't say anything as Ana softly pried the newborn from his grip and took control of the situation. He seemed to have opted for looking at his wife with awe and adoration.

Ana laughed slightly once she noticed his expression. "What?"

Normally, Ed probably would've answered with a riddle, but once more his mind was drawing a blank. He swallowed his bitter frustration for a moment and settled for hugging her from behind and settling his chin on the top of her head. "Nothing. You're just so... soft with her. It reminds of how you were with Selina towards the beginning. Speaking of which, what does she like to eat? I was probably going to go get stuff for dinner soon."

Ana shrugged slightly. "She's not picky for the most part. As long as there's no mushrooms, she'll eat just about anything you make if it's a free meal."

Ed chuckled slightly. "No mushrooms, got it."

In the end, Ed ended up getting more food than they would probably need, but it was their first meal together, as a family. They'd met up a couple of times during the holidays before they had begun dating, and he was always there for Ana and Selina's birthdays if possible, but this was different.

He'd signed paperwork what seems like a lifetime ago to make him a legal guardian of Selina when Ana had showed up on his doorstep one day in tears about how she thought the child service people might try to take Selina away. They were both young at the time and Ana was struggling to make ends meet between finishing her Doctorate and raising a 6 year old. He had still been pretty new to the GCPD then, but he had a more stable income so he hadn't hesitated to sign the paperwork when she asked.

But now, he was basically her Dad. I mean, he didn't expect her to call him that, and he he had no plans on making her, but still. Ed wanted it to be perfect. So yes, he had gone overboard. He frankly didn't care. Lee would be joining too since she wanted to 'mediate' and whatever they didn't finish would go to Grundy. Who knows how long the big guy can go without food, but it was in both of their best interests that the mutated man kept his strength up.

Selina slipped through an open window as Ed pulled the last thing out of the oven. She raised an eyebrow at the heaps of food covering the table. Selina had heard rumors that the Riddler had lost his touch but anyone who could cook like that was ok cognitively in her book.

"I wasn't aware I was attending a thanksgiving feast."

Ed barely kept himself from jumping. "Hey. You can sit down if you want. I'll go get Ana and Lee."

Selina didn't need to be told twice. The teen hadn't been kidding when she said it looked like a feast. The table was set to perfection with neatly stacked porcelain plates topped with napkins folded into cats. There was a bowl of salad, Mac-n-cheese [the fancy kind with bread crumbs on top], salmon with tiny purple potatoes surrounding it, and crème brûlée.

The three adults reentered the dining room after a moment, newborn baby in tow. It's almost weird seeing them practically move in cinque considering just how bad Lee was at hiding her disdain towards her ex-coworker. Lee sat down next to Selina as Ana and Ed focused on fastening the amused baby into the booster seat and giving her some things to keep Caitlyn occupied. After a moment, Ed switches to the head of the table, while Ana takes her place by the baby.

"Dig in!"

Selina doesn't hesitate to do just that. Finally!

It's silent for a awkward moment before Ed turns towards the teen with a slight smile. "So, Ana tells you've been mostly living with Tabitha. How's that going?"

Selina narrows her eyes for a moment as she seems to try and scan his mind for anterior motives. After a second, she relaxed slightly. "...It's fine. She doesn't like you very much, ya'know."

Ed winces slightly as Ana tosses her husband a slightly scolding look. "Yeah, I'm aware. When I'm smart again, I was thinking maybe find away to turn Grundy back to Butch if possible as a 'sorry for cutting your hand off' gift."

Selina nearly choked as Caitlyn let out a cooing sound. "What the hell is a Grundy?"

Ana smiled softly. "It's a long story kitten, and we don't have all the details, but Butch somehow ended up mutated and thinks his name is Grundy now. He's helping us till we can help him, and we are going to help him." Ed didn't wince this time. He just ducked his head slightly in acknowledgement.

The silence doesn't have time to settle back in before Lee turns towards her with a slightly forced smile. "What exactly has Tabitha been teaching you, by the way?"

Selina shrugged as she finished her Mac-n-cheese and started to poke at her Salmon. "Self defense mostly. How's the clinic going?"

The two women exchanged a glance. They were nearly out of medication before taking Ed's money. Half went towards food, the other half went towards the clinic. Whatever was left over was put towards Caitlyn.

"Better now that we have extra income," Lee begrudgingly admits and Ed seemed to glow as if she had just complimented him.

"And to think, you didn't want Grundy fighting in the first place."

Lee glared slightly before slapping on a smile to sweet and sarcastic to be genuine. "To think."

Selina glanced between the adults like she was watching a tennis match. Ana and Lee's partnership had made sense from the beginning. They had been roommates all the way through medical school and Ana had only ever really killed people who deserved it for the most part. Why wouldn't a morally dubious Lee welcome her back?

Ed and Ana had been end game since high school, even if they hadn't known it at the time. Despite their recent hardships and fights, they still clearly loved each other. Ana's death had devastated the former forensic scientist almost more than it had devastated Selina.

To watch them all get along, even with the cutting remarks felt like a miracle. And who doesn't like a good miracle every once in a while?
