FREE BIRD
Juliet had been on The Voice for what seemed like forever now, and you loved to see her show off her beautiful voice onstage. The only problem?
You hadn't been able to see her perform in person.
You were grateful that she was able to serenade millions on live television. But not being able to talk to her other than the occasional phone call for almost four weeks was driving you insane. You missed her so much.
Juliet was your everything. You had been with her for a little over two years. You met her at Warped Tour 2010—you were a musician that had been asked to play on the tour by the owner, Kevin Lyman. Your band was relatively unknown, whilst hers, Automatic Loveletter, had many adoring fans. You understood why. The moment you had heard her voice on that hot summer day, you wanted to get to know her. And that's exactly what you did.
"Babe, I really wish we could see each other," Juliet pouts on the other end of the phone. "This is my last performance before the finale, and not being able to see you sucks. Not only that, but I'm sick!"
"I know, Juliet," you murmured, attempting to comfort her. You could hear the strain in her voice and knew she was close to tears. You didn't want her to be too stressed for tonight's performance, especially since she was suffering from bronchitis and walking pneumonia. You knew she was going through hell. "It'll be okay. I'm going to see you perform next week. They can't stop us from doing that."
You stare down at the laminated pass in your hand. What she didn't know was that you were coming sooner than expected.
"I miss you," she whispered.
"I miss you more," you said. Then, you smiled softly. "I can't wait to see my rockstar on TV tonight."
She giggled. "Oh, please." Then, you hear shuffling and muffled voices on the other end. "Okay," Juliet breathes out. A door slams. She sighs. "I'm really sorry babe, but I have to go. Cee-Lo wants me to do some extra vocal training before my performances. Especially since this is the big 'grand finale'."
You nod. "I understand. Have fun. I love you, Juliet."
"I love you too, Y/N, more than anything." A pause. You knew she didn't want to go, she had only talked to you for two minutes this time. "Bye."
Beeping on the other end lets you know she's hung up and you sigh. Admittedly, you were nervous to see her tonight. You hadn't hugged her or kissed her in so long. You stare down at the red roses you had bought for this special occasion. You hoped she would love them.
It wasn't a very far drive from your hotel to the Universal Lot, which is where they shoot the show. You park your car outside of the entrance and take in a deep breath. You then stare at your watch. You were a little late, but that was what you wanted. You had to be there for the last song. You don't hesitate to grab your keys, cellphone, and the bouquet of flowers before walking through the entrance.
A guard tries to stop you from going any further but you show your backstage pass. He nods. "Sorry about that. Are you here to see watch the contestants tonight?"
You nod, unable to hide your smile. "Yeah, my girlfriend Juliet is on the show. I'm here to surprise her."
He grinned. "Juliet Simms? I love her voice. She just performed two other songs and they were amazing!" He motions you forward. "You can go ahead and find your seat. The producers will be happy to see you."
You walk into the large soundstage and you're shocked to see that the seats are filled with so many people. You look down at the number on your pass and find your seat as well. It was on the second row, which meant you'd be able to watch everything up close.
You shift the flowers to your other hand, wiping the sweat on your dress. Your fingers run over the tiny ring box you had been keeping in your jacket pocket. You were nervous. Very very nervous.
Someone taps you on the shoulder. You spin around and see that it's a producer. She welcomes you warmly and tells you that almost all of the contestants knew you were coming except for Juliet. Even the judges knew.
"Juliet bragged about you whenever she first auditioned for the show," she gushes. "She said that you're also a musician."
You nod. "Yeah. My band is supposed to go on tour in the fall."
Someone from backstage calls her name. She waves goodbye. You do the same, and turn your attention to the stage. This was it. You'd finally be able to see Juliet's beautiful face in person, to finally hear her voice after so long...
By the time she's set to perform her last song, you're nearly shaking from excitement. The lights dim, and your eyes widen when you see her.
She was absolutely stunning. She wore a a fiery floor-length gown, complete with a hypnotic, geometric pattern and gold ornamentation on the neckline. Her dark brown hair fell in waves, and her sea-green eyes seemed to sparkle in the stage lighting.
Juliet steps up to the microphone, and focuses on the crowd. Then she begins to sing.
If I leave you tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
Tears immediately start to prick your eyes. If she had chosen this song, she did for a reason—this was the song you had asked her out to.
If I stay here with you now
Things just couldn't be the same
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now
And this bird you cannot change
And this bird you cannot change
Lord knows I can't change...
You were shocked by the guitar solo. The burst of smoke that billowed the train of her dress made her seem like an angel taking flight. She was smiling and singing her heart out. The guitarist was also getting into the performance. She was happy. She was having fun. And you loved it. You were completely and utterly entranced.
No, I'm not gonna change
I said I'm not gonna change
No, I'm not gonna change
No, no, no, not gonna change
I said I'm not gonna change
No I'm not gonna change
I'm gonna fly
Free bird!
Fly!
You stand, clapping your hands as hard as you can. Juliet looks at the crowd and the cheering judges gives them bashful smiles.
"That's my girl!" You cry.
"Representing Team Cee-Lo, our final finalist of tonight, Juliet Simms!" The announcer says. The cameras pan onto you as you continue to cheer. You notice this, and hope that it doesn't ruin your surprise. But Juliet is so shocked she doesn't seem to notice.
The interviewer steps up to her. "Juliet, that was an incredible performance! What do you have to say to the audience, and to your Coach, Cee-Lo?"
Juliet clears her throat. "I just want to say how thankful I am to have this opportunity. I wouldn't have ever made it this far if it wasn't for my wonderful Coach, my girlfriend, my family, and most importantly, my fans. Thank you all for your support."
The interviewer smiles. "We have a surprise for you tonight."
She furrows her brows, and you can see that your girlfriend is confused. Adorable, you thought. "A...surprise?"
"Yes!" The camera pans onto you once again, and so do the stage lights. The crowd begins to roar once again. Juliet's eyes widen to the size of saucers and she covers her mouth with her hands. "Y/N wanted to congratulate you in person tonight," he says.
He motions for you to come forward, and you take that as your cue. You bolt out of your seat, almost falling flat on your face to get to her. Once you rush out on stage, she jumps in your arms, and hugs you tightly. The tears flow freely now and you run your fingers through her hair. "Babe!" she sobbed. "I can't believe you're here!"
"I wouldn't miss it for the world, Juliet." She pulled away, pressing a soft kiss to your lips. She then notices the roses in your hands and smiles widely.
"For me?" Juliet gasps. You nod, and she takes them from you. Her smile was the biggest it had ever been. You smiled wide in return.
She wipes her eyes, and they end shooting after the interviewer congratulates her once more. As soon as the cameras shut off, Juliet gives you another tight hug.
"I'm so happy!" she squealed. "I love the flowers. Thank you for coming."
"Anything for you, babe." You press a kiss to her forehead and she takes your hand in hers, leading you offstage and to where her Coach, Cee-Lo Green, was standing, talking to Adam Levine.
"Cee-Lo, this is Y/N," she said. Adam Levine mumbles something about coffee and walks away, likely knowing it was best for the two of you to have a proper introduction.
Cee-Lo takes off his sunglasses and gives you a bright smile. "It's so nice to finally meet you, Y/N. Juliet talks about you all of the time." He holds out his hand and you shake it. "She's a wonderful performer. I am so proud of her."
Juliet smiles. "Thanks, Cee-Lo. You're the best."
He waves goodbye and leaves. Juliet turns to face you. "Well, I guess it's back to my hotel for the night," she sighed. You knew that the hotel didn't allow any other guests other than contestants.
You grinned. "Oh, not necessarily." She raised her brows and you explain further. "I might have bought a disguise so I can sneak in."
She gasps, hitting you on the arm. "Y/N! You're evil."
"You know you love it," you reply. "Wait here. I'll be right back."
You're back from your car in minutes and Juliet immediately doubled over with laughter at your disguise. You went all out—you had bought an outfit that made you look like one of the crew members backstage, complete with the black baseball cap that read CREW.
"You look so silly!" she giggled.
"Silly enough to not get caught?"
"Yes, definitely."
The two of you exit the soundstage for the night and take a cab back to her hotel. You try to seem as inconspicuous as possible, avoiding holding her hand when you walk into the hotel, no matter how much you wanted to. It was all part of your plan, and you didn't want to mess things up.
The security in the lobby didn't give the two of you a second glance as you went to the elevator. As soon as you walk in, the two of you burst into laughter once again. You take off your silly disguise, knowing that you were free from any security, and stuff it into the small duffel bag you brought. Juliet still held her roses tightly in her hands.
She led you to her hotel room, room number 410. It was already unlocked, and your heart began to pound whenever she opened the door. "It's so dark in here," Juliet muttered. She turns on the light and lets out a shocked gasp.
The room was decorated with candles, and rose petals made a trail on the hotel room floor to her duvet. Soft piano music plays from a radio positioned on her vanity.
"What is all this?" Juliet asked. "How did you do this?"
"I might have asked the producers if they could help me," you admitted with a smile. You pull the small velvet box out of your jacket pocket.
"So there wasn't any need for a disguise?" She spins around to face you, but covers her mouth with her hands when you drop down to one knee.
You take in a deep breath. "Juliet Nicole Simms, I love you. I love everything about you, whether it be your beauty, your talent, or your kind heart. If I listed every single thing I love about you it would take an eternity. You make me the happiest person in the entire world. I want to love you forever. Will you marry me?"
"Oh, my God," Juliet breathed. Tears immediately start to fall down her face. "Yes! Yes, I love you."
She holds out her hand and you slide the beautiful diamond ring onto her left ring finger. She presses her lips to yours, harder than ever before. You kiss back with sudden urgency and when you pull away, Juliet stares at you with adoration.
Then, she stares down at the ring on her finger. She's entranced by it as it sparkles in the light, and you are too. "Oh, this is so exciting..."
You nod. "I was so nervous."
"You did amazing," Juliet murmured, kissing you.
"To answer your previous question, yes, I didn't need the disguise," you said. "But I didn't want to seem suspicious."
Juliet smiled up at you. "You got me." She stares down a her hand once more. "This is perfect. We have to announce it."
She grabs her cellphone off of her bedside table and opens her Camera app. You take selfies that Juliet proudly shows off her ring in, the both of you wearing a big smile, along with a sweet picture of you kissing her knuckles. The rose petal trail and candles in the background make it an all-around romantic picture that you know her fans will adore.
She decides to post it on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, with the caption: Surprise...I said yes! <3 She tagged you in the photos and posts them. Almost immediately she was flooded with likes and comments, everyone gushing how happy they were for the two of you.
"We do make a great couple," you say as you read her many Instagram comments. "This night couldn't be any more perfect."
Juliet smiles. "I think it could be." She rests her hand on your thigh and looks pointedly at the rose petals and candles.
"What?" you ask, not getting her innuendo.
"We can't let all of the pretty decorations go to waste." She fluttered her lashes at you and you immediately get it. Your eyes widen, but you don't hesitate to wrap her in your arms and lay her down. She giggled and kisses you, over and over again.
That night, you showed her how much she meant to you. She was your everything.
And she always would be.
