Roman stopped the car in their driveway and parked it, unbuckling his seatbelt but not reaching to open the door, instead leaning back in his seat with a sigh. He looked over at Virgil and reached out to put his hand on top of Virgil's.
"Not excited about going inside?" Virgil wondered with a small smile.
"Not particularly if we're going to be greeted by the scene we left." He said. "Does that make me a bad parent?"
"No, a sane and a tired one. We're allowed breaks." Virgil said, lacing their fingers together.
Patton had been upset all day, for whatever reason, refusing anything they tried to do to cheer him up and once Roman and Virgil had headed out to do the weekly grocery shopping he had thrown a tantrum about them leaving. They had tried to backtrack and tell him that they would do the shopping tomorrow instead, but it had been too late to calm him and Logan had told them that they might as well leave.
That was about an hour and a half ago and neither of them had heard from Logan since then, which meant that they didn't know if he had managed to calm him down or if they were going to step inside to the same whining they had been listening to all morning.
"I love him with all my heart but, by god, wouldn't it be easier if they came with a manual?" Roman said and Virgil snorted. He had been wishing the same thing for the past two years.
"Definitely. But who knows, maybe he had a bad dream or something, or maybe he's having a stomach ache." He shrugged. It kind of sucked, but two year olds just didn't always have the vocabulary or understanding to explain why they were upset, which meant that some problems were difficult for them to fix.
"I vote we take a moment before going inside. Actually," Roman let go of his hand, turning to reach for a grocery bag that he had put in the backseat, "I got us some cake, figured we needed something energizing."
He pulled two packages with a big slice of store bought cake from the bag, handing one to Virgil who accepted it gratefully.
"As if eating all of this won't leave us in a food coma, but I've got no complaints." He said, opening the plastic container and removing the lid. He was about to ask if Roman had gotten them any spoons or if they were going to eat with their hands, but looking over at his boyfriend he was taking a bite out of the cake directly from the packaging.
He snorted and shook his head but followed his example and bit into his slice of cake. He hummed in delight, leaning back in his seat and looking at Roman again.
"This gotta be your best idea yet." He said, then laughed and almost choked on his mouthful of cake as Roman looked up.
"Hang on," Virgil swallowed down his bite, putting the package down in his lap, "you got something on your face." He reached out and wiped away the frosting that Roman had gotten on the tip of his nose, then licked his thumb clean.
"Hey, don't steal from my cake." Roman said, using his fingers to scoop up a chunk of cake and stuffing it in his mouth.
"Here I am, being cute with you, and you're whining about a bit of frosting. What a shame." He said, shaking his head.
"I'll appreciate your cuteness once I'm no longer starving." Roman said and Virgil rolled his eyes with a little smile and turned back to his own slice of cake.
They ate their delicious cake, then climbed out of the car and, after throwing the empty cake packages in their bin, both grabbed as many bags as they could physically carry before making their way up to the front door.
They carried everything into the kitchen, then went back to the hallway to take their shoes off and Virgil sent Roman out to lock the car. The silence in the house was a good sign, but it made him wonder where Logan and Patton were because when he peeked into the living room he found it to be empty.
He shrugged and went back into the kitchen, rummaging through the bags and putting the frozen chicken and greens in the freezer. Roman joined him and it didn't take them many minutes to put their groceries away. They folded the bags up into triangles and put them away in their bag full of grocery bags because Logan always told them to reuse the old ones.
"Wanna look for our boys?" Roman then said, his hand finding Virgil's.
"Yeah, let's check upstairs. Living room's empty and I doubt they're in the office." Roman pulled Virgil with him upstairs. The downstairs and upstairs bathrooms were empty, and so was their bedroom and their extra bedroom.
(The three of them shared a room and a bed, but if any of them needed space for whatever reason then an extra bedroom was very practical.)
Roman pushed the door to Patton's room up, immediately awwing. Virgil looked inside, spotting Logan half-lying down on Patton's bed, fast asleep with an arm around their two year old who was tucked into his side. Patton's favorite storybook was lying next to them on the bed, still loosely in Logan's grasp.
"Aw," Virgil leaned against the doorframe, "I guess Pat needed a nap."
"Both of them did, by the looks of it." Roman said in a hushed tone. Virgil took his phone from his pocket, snapping several pictures of the adorable sight in front of them.
That one was going in the Patton-centric scrapbook that Virgil had been working on since his son was only a few months old. It held a large amount of pictures of Patton and his two boyfriends, because Virgil definitely had a weakness for seeing Roman and Logan being good dads to Patton.
"Cmon, we'll let them sleep." Virgil said, giving Roman's hand a little tug and they turned away from the sleeping pair and tiptoed towards the stairs.
"Yeah, no use waking them up. I'll just put Logan's piece of cake in the fridge." Roman said, swinging their hands between them as they went back to the kitchen to do just that.
"And once Logan wakes up we interrogate him to find out how he managed to calm the kid. He gotta share whatever secret he must've learned to calm Pat. He was inconsolable!" Roman said, shaking his head.
"Oh, you know how he is. Sometimes he can just talk Patton down when he's upset. Last week he was throwing a tantrum because I wouldn't give him a cookie, and Logan just scooped him up in his arms and sat down with him and practically gave him an introductory class to black holes and after a while Patton just quieted and sat there listening in Logan's arms. Man's a toddler-whisperer." Virgil said, making Roman chuckle.
"Well, anyway, I still wanna learn his ways. But how about I use this rare moment of alone time to finally appreciate how cute you are?" Roman said, leading him towards the living room.
"Another great idea." Virgil told him, being pushed down to sit on the couch, soon having an armful of Roman in his lap.
