[5] - A Rainy Day And A Realization

Warnings: nope

Summary: a rainy day gives virgil the opportunity to think about their relationship and where it could be headed next

set by the time patton is two and a half years old

--

The rain was pouring down, the usually suffocatingly warm June weather exchanged for a much more pleasant temperature. It was cool enough that they could all sit outside on the porch with mugs of tea while they watched Patton stomp in the forming puddles in their garden.

The roof that Roman had insisted to build over their porch on the back of the house definitely came in handy during days like this one because it meant they could take the pillows and cushions for the outside furniture on their porch and that they and the pillows would stay dry, because Patton was definitely the one out of them that liked rainy days the most.

Every time it rained they had no choice but to dress him up in his rain jacket and rain boots and let him play in the garden or he would be whining and pouting for the entire time the rain lasted, and it was supposed to rain the whole weekend.

"He's going to be caked with mud once we get him back inside." Logan said with a sigh as they both watched Patton slip and fall on his butt in a puddle that was particularly muddy as he had just been stomping around and jumping it.

"You know it." Virgil said, curling into his side. "But that's a problem for future us."

He sipped his tea, turning his head as the back door opened and Roman joined them, carrying the blanket that he had left to find a few minutes ago.

"Here we go." He said, shaking the rainbow blanket out and draping it over Virgil's and Logan's laps before sitting down next to Logan and pulling the blanket over himself too.

"He's not showing any signs of getting tired of the rain yet, huh?" Roman said, reaching for the cup of tea that he had left dangerously balanced on the armrest of the couch.

"Nope." Virgil said, looking over at their son again and seeing Patton still sitting in the puddle, kicking his feet into the muddy water and looking entirely delighted as the water splashed.

"At least we have no choice but to make hot chocolate and curl up on the couch all four of us and watch a bunch of Disney movies once we get back inside. That's the law of rainy days." Roman said with a satisfied smile, leaning his head against Logan's shoulder.

"If you say so." Logan said, turning his head to the side to press a kiss to Roman's hair. None of them had any objections to that plan and they quieted, listening to the pitter patter of rain. Patton scooped something up from a puddle, then stood up and ran towards them.

"What you got there, Pat?" Roman wondered and their son proudly held up two handfuls of mud that dripped between his fingers and onto the porch. Logan gave a little grunt at the mess but didn't say anything.

"Mud!" He yelled proudly.

"Fo' you!" He then added and bent down to let the mud drip from his hands and onto the porch. Then he wiped his hands on the porch before straightening himself up again and giving the three of them a bright smile before running out into the rain again.

"Um, I vote that we just leave it there until it dries and we can just sweep it away." Virgil said, raising a hand slightly. Roman immediately stuck his hand up and Logan rolled his eyes.

"That's just laziness and we all know it will be left there for weeks before anyone does anything about it." He said, of course being right, but Virgil wasn't going to admit that.

"Or being smart, but sure, if you want it gone then you're free to wipe or hose it away." Virgil offered, looking at him and raising his brows challengingly.

"No, no, that was a democratic vote and you won, I can deal with that." Logan said, holding a hand up to show that he was politely declining the suggestion.

"I'm gonna remember that tonight when we vote on what movies to watch." Roman said, grinning at Logan and leaving a little kiss on his jaw before leaning his head on his shoulder again and sipping his tea.

Virgil leaned forward to put his empty cup aside on the porch, deeming it the safest place to put it since he was too lazy to get up and take two steps to leave it on the little table a few feet away. Hopefully none of them would accidentally step on it once they went back inside.

"On the topic of movies, I was listening to one of Roman's playlists and it had parts of the Moana soundtrack, and it was quite a while ago since we watched that movie last." Logan said.

"Brilliant idea, my love, almost as brilliant as you." Roman said with a wink, making Logan roll his eyes but smile. If there was anything Logan was susceptible to it was praise and compliments. And of course promises of Crofters.

Virgil focused his attention on Patton again, watching him step into a puddle and hearing him giggle at the little splashes he created. Then he ran off towards the hedge that split their and their neighbors garden apart. He pulled some leaves from the bushes, then toddled back to the pulle and threw them into it before jumping into the puddle again.

"I'd love to know his thought process sometimes." Virgil said. It was quite often that he watched his son do something and wondered what it was he was thinking.

"That would be very interesting, indeed." Logan agreed, shaking his head as they watched Patton sit down right into the puddle and pull at the wet grass.

"Remind me to empty his rainboots before letting him inside." He said, easily imagining Patton rushing inside with his boots on and dripping water everywhere. Though, with or without his water filled boots he was drenched enough to easily make a mess.

"I'd recommend we undress him before letting him inside and simply carry him directly to the bathtub." Logan said. "By now all his clothes have to be drenched, and he even has mud in his hair."

"Imagine having so much fun just because it's raining." Roman mused, watching their son crawl through the puddles and the grass with amusement.

"Yeah. He's gonna be a wet and muddy mess, but it's nice to see him play and have fun." Virgil said with a smile, taking Logan's empty cup from his hold and putting it next to his own, which left Logan's hands free, and as if he could read Virgil's mind he put his arms around the both of them to hold them a bit closer.

"And it gives us a calm moment." Logan said, kissing the top of Roman's head again and then turning towards Virgil who had raised his head in anticipation and got the forehead kiss that he had wanted.

"Yeah, it does." Roman said, putting his cup back on the armrest and wrapping an arm across Logan's stomach. The three of them looked at their two and a half year old play in the rain, currently filling up a pink little bucket with water from a puddle and then pouring it into the already near drowning plants in Logan's neat flower bed, as if he was watering them.

Virgil sighed in content and smiled, feeling warmth and giddiness in his chest at the thought of how domestic this all was, sitting outside together and watching their son having fun in the rain.

The three of them had been together for over three years at this point, celebrating their three year anniversary just two months ago, so obviously there had been many, many domestic moments between them, but despite the fact that their lives had been pretty domestic ever since they moved in together it still had Virgil feeling so incredibly soft and happy about his little family any time he remembered that they were a happy little family.

He didn't worry about Logan and Roman leaving him anymore, hadn't for a long while. Instead he felt almost sure that he would be spending the rest of his life with the two of them by his side, a thought that made Virgil feel happier than pretty much anything else.

He loved his family more than he would ever be able to put into words. His son and his boyfriends, he had everything he would ever need, and he didn't think he could think of any way to improve things.

He reached across Logan's lap, entwining his fingers with Roman's.

Actually, he realized while looking at their clasped hands that fit so nicely together, there were next steps to take if they wanted to.

He had never thought much about it, marriage and such, because it had never been something that he had wanted particularly much, and when he was younger he had always doubted that someone would love him enough to even want to take that step with him, and not having thought that there would be someone he trusted enough to take that step with, which was no longer worries that he had.

Engagement and marriage had also seemed unnecessary, because Virgil had never thought that he needed a ring to know and show what his boyfriends meant to him.

They knew he loved them, and they knew he planned to spend the rest of his life with them, and he knew that they felt the same way, and that had always been enough and they had been busy being parents and already being content with the relationship they had and not discussed their potential future that much.

Well, of course they had had a conversation about stuff like that a few months into their relationship just to make sure that there was not something huge that would leave any of them unhappy in their relationship in the future.

They had all been a bit nervous and all Virgil remembered from it was that Logan had mentioned not liking kids that much (which, well, was complete bull when it came to Patton, at least) and that Roman and Logan had both said they were not opposed to the idea of getting married someday.

Virgil had been the one to not be that open towards the thought of being married someday, which the other two had been fine with.

For the first time he realized that being engaged to and being married to these two was actually something he liked the thought of, a lot. It made him feel the same way he had felt back when they had begun dating and he was still constantly exhilarated when remembering that the three of them were actually boyfriends.

"What are you smiling about?" Roman wondered, bringing Virgil out of his fantasies about engagement rings and what Patton would look like in a little suit at their wedding, having the role of Virgil's best man, obviously.

"Nothing. I just love you guys a lot, and you make me happy." He said, seeing Roman smiling and pressing his face into Logan's shirt and Logan smiled but raised a brow as if to ask if that was really all. Virgil just met his eyes, still smiling, and hoped that that was enough of an answer.

"I love you both a lot, too." Logan said, momentarily hugging them closer as if to accentuate his words.

"Me too, love you both the most." Roman spoke into Logan's shirt.

Virgil looked back out at the garden where Patton was running around with his little bucket in one hand and a matching plastic spade in his other, thoughts immediately going back to the fact that getting engaged was something he wanted and something that was a pretty logical next step when they had been together for so long.

It was strange how little the thought of this next, huge, step in their relationship just... didn't scare him. He had been terrified asking them to be his boyfriends, he had been convinced they would leave him when he had Patton, and he had been worrying lots about moving in with them despite how happy he was about it.

He supposed the anxiety would show up later, when he was actually planning when to propose, or when he was ring shopping, or before maybe somehow checking up with them that marriage was something that was still on the table for the both of them because it seemed like something he should make sure of.

Right now, though? He just felt happy imagining this potential next chapter of their lives, and determined that he would be the one to ask for it, because he wanted this, he really wanted this.

Patton walked up to them, dripping rainwater everywhere, clothes and hands covered in mud and looking like the happiest two year old in the world.

"Dada up." Patton said, reaching for Logan who didn't look particularly excited about it but removed his arms around Virgil and Roman and grabbed a hold of Patton, lifting him up into his lap. He grimaced as their very wet toddler cuddled up in his lap, but put his arms around him anyway.

"Patton, are you aware that you are very wet at the moment?" Logan wondered and Virgil snorted as Patton kicked a bit with his feet and he could see water pouring out of his boots and onto Logan's pants.

"Mhm!" He said, completely unbothered by his dripping clothes. Virgil shuddered just at the thought of being in his position, wet clothes were the worst.

"How about we go inside and you can take a nice bath, even with bubbles if you want?" He offered him. No matter how nice it was to sit outside during rainy days like this he didn't want Patton to be cold, and Roman's insistence on hot chocolate and Disney movies sounded really nice at the moment.

"Bub'ls." Patton said with determination and Virgil reached out to pick away a little twig that had gotten stuck in Patton's hair.

"Alright then, little one, let us prepare that bubble bath." Logan said, taking one for the team and standing up and carrying Patton inside.

"Oh, sweet, that gives us at least twenty minutes of toddler free time." Roman said and wiggled his eyebrows, scooting closer to Virgil and putting his arm around him.

"That it does." He said, pushing the blanket away and climbing onto Roman's lap. He loved his son more than anything, but alone time with his boyfriends could be scarce when having a toddler around.

And right now he had a lot of sappy, lovey-dovey feelings to act on.
