Chapter 7: A Dangerous Situation
Outside, the sky was quite dark, but it was lit up by the many twinkling stars surrounding the bright, glowing white moon. Crickets were harmoniously chirping in the distance, their songs seeming to be loud enough to be heard for miles. Pale moonlight was shining through a clear glass window in Molly's bedroom, and was the only current source of light. Molly was currently asleep in her soft bed with Talulah cuddled up by her side.
Molly jolted awake as the sound of glass loudly shattering could be heard from downstairs. She swiftly sat up in her bed, and was unable to keep herself from becoming afraid. What was that? Fear coursed through her heart like a raging forest fire, and threatened to siege the pounding organ inside of her chest. Talulah had been awoken by the sound as well, and was now producing low, deep growls. "Talulah, please be quiet!" Molly urgently whispered, causing Talulah to become silent. Molly quietly got out of her bed, then made her way over to her bedside table. She stretched her hands out in front of her, and began to rely on them as her guide. Once her fingertips had brushed up against the bedside table's smooth, wooden surface, Molly moved one of her hands downward. After grabbing hold of the drawer's handle, she proceeded to slowly pull the top drawer open.
Molly winced as the drawer produced a series of soft squeaking noises. She paused, and found herself holding her breath as she listened for footsteps. I hope no one heard that. Upon hearing no sounds at all, Molly resumed slowly opening the drawer. She would occasionally pause, then resumed opening the drawer after a few moments of silence. I don't want to make too much noise, or whoever is here will find me. I have to be very careful. Once the drawer was fully opened, Molly retrieved a knife from inside the wooden object. She also grabbed a wireless phone off of its receiver on the bedside table.
Molly turned back around to face her bed, then proceeded to quietly kneel down onto the wooden floor beneath her. She shifted as she moved her body to lie down on her stomach. Molly moved her arms in front of her, being careful not to hurt herself with the knife in her left hand. She pushed her body forwards until she was completely underneath her bed. Molly turned her body sideways so that her legs wouldn't stick out from underneath the bed. Holding the phone in her left hand, Molly temporarily set the knife down in order to dial 911. She proceeded to press the numbers on the phone, then moved her thumb over to the call button.
The sound of footsteps approaching her bedroom caused Molly to pause and hold her breath. She remained as still as a statue as she heard her bedroom door eerily creak open. Please don't let me be found. Please. I don't want to die. Molly felt her body tense up as she heard Talulah fiercely barking at whoever had entered the room. The pug's angered, loud barks filled the room and reverberated off of the bedroom walls. "Shut up, you mangy mutt!" A male voice growled.
Molly felt her pounding heart skip a beat as she heard a soft thud, followed by the sound of Talulah whimpering. No! Talulah! Warm, wet tears emerged from Molly's tear ducts, then proceeded to slide down her soft, pale cheeks. Please let her be okay. The man's footsteps could suddenly be heard as he moved across the room. The soft sounds of movement swiftly faded away as the man paused near the foot of the bed. Molly remained silent as she strained to listen for any noises that the man might produce. Slowly moving her hand towards the knife's handle, Molly quietly grabbed hold of it. She clutched the knife in her right hand as she remained still. Cold sweat clung to Molly's skin, and caused her to feel quite clammy and uncomfortable. Her small body was involuntarily trembling, due to being engulfed by the tight grasp of fear and anxiety.
A scream emerged from Molly's now parted lips as she felt a hand grab hold of her ankle. She struggled to kick her attacker away as she was dragged out from underneath the bed. Talulah's barks and growls filled the room once more as the pug caught sight of the scene. Talulah had been lying on the bedroom floor, in an injured state. Scarlet blood stuck to her pelt, on her side, near her belly. The pug shifted into a standing position, then darted towards Molly's attacker. The pug let out a deep, fierce growl as her lip curled upwards to reveal her bared teeth. The fawn colored fur on Talulah's body had risen, and was now a bristling storm that made her look bigger than she actually was. Talulah leaped at Molly's attacker, causing him to stumble and release Molly's ankle in the process. He produced a surprised cry as he fell to the wooden floor beneath him, only to find Talulah towering over his body. The pug was standing on the man's stomach, and was staring down at him with her angered brown gaze.
"Thank you, Talulah." Molly said to the fawn-colored pug with a small smile. She sat up, then sighed in relief. "Don't you dare try to do anything." Molly told the man firmly, her voice being engulfed by seriousness. She proceeded to press the call button on the phone she was still holding in her left hand. The phone began to produce a series of noises as it dialed the number. "911. What is your emergency?" A woman's voice asked, having emerged from the phone's speaker. "A man just broke into my house. Please come quickly! He's in my room and-" Molly cut herself off as she heard a loud thud, followed by a cry of pain from Talulah. "Ma'am? What's happening? The police are on their way. We are tracking your call." The woman calmly informed Molly.
Molly didn't have time to answer as she felt the man grab her by the back of her shirt. She screamed, then began to thrash around in an attempt to break free. The phone slid out of her grasp, then fell to the wooden floor in her struggle. "Get off of me!" Molly yelled as she attempted to strike the man with her sharp, pointed kitchen knife. The man grabbed her hand, then roughly removed the weapon from her grasp. After he had thrown the knife across the room, both Molly and the man had heard a soft thud as the weapon had hit the wooden floor. "No one can save you now." The man's low, whispering voice had been picked up by Molly's keen hearing. His words had caused icy, tingling chills to travel along Molly's spine, only to slowly fade away afterwards. Her skin still felt cold, and her arms were littered with the faint indications of goosebumps.
Before Molly could even react, the last thing she had felt was a hard, solid object that had struck the back of her head. Darkness was already engulfing Molly's sight, due to her having been born blind. Molly's body rendered itself limp as she instantly slid into an unconscious state. Talulah's loud barks could be heard once again as the man suddenly knelt down. He proceeded to pick Molly up, then place her limp body over his shoulders. He ignored the fawn-colored pug as he turned and began to walk towards the bedroom door. The man silently left the bedroom, leaving Talulah behind as the pug softly whimpered.
