Chapter 3 - Day Out

You awoke in your new home as the sunlight streamed in through the balcony doors. You pushed yourself onto the edge of the bed, sitting up and rubbing your eyes. Today was your last day off before classes started and you had made some loose plans with Eraserhead to go out, though you weren't exactly sure when or where. The anxiety of not knowing and wanting to make a plan made you reach for your phone, but once it was in your hand, you realized that you hadn't yet gotten anyone's phone numbers.

You gave a slight sigh and forced yourself up to get ready for the day. Once you'd trained for the day, you took a shower, and got dressed. You chose a long white skirt, black puff-sleeved blouse, and slipped into a pair of black heels. You slipped your hero suit on top of the outfit, but bent the light such that it looked as if you were only wearing the skirt and blouse. You brushed your hair back, letting it breathe rather than putting it up. You stepped out of your room, stretching and humming to yourself. You took a little stroll down the hallway, glancing at each door to see who was in each room. Aizawa's room was just a few doors down, beside Present Mic's. It was then that an idea popped into your head.

You rushed back into your room, grabbing a piece of paper from your desk and writing a short note:

"Good morning! I realize we didn't make any concrete plans and I don't have your phone number to reach out, so find me when you're ready and we can figure it out then. See you later!

~(Y/N) <3"

You stepped back out into the hallway and slid the note under Aizawa's door, though it did feel a bit childish. Either ways, it soothed your anxiety about the plans at least a little bit. You roamed out to the common area, finding some of the students making breakfast. Yaoyorozu was happily humming while stirring some tea and Midoriya was sat at a table, scarfing down whatever he had for breakfast.

"Good morning, Ms. (Y/N)!" Yaoyorozu smiled when she saw you. "Would you like some tea? I have new imported tea that my mother sent me!" She grabbed the boxes from the cabinet excitedly.

You chuckled softly, "I'm good. Thank you, Yaoyorozu." You twirled a lock of hair around your finger, leaning against the wall. "I prefer coffee in the mornings. Especially after some training."

"You were out training this morning?" Midoriya turned in his chair. "That's awesome! Your quirk is so cool! You can manipulate light like Hagakure, but you can supercharge it into a beam and also use it to camaflouge and use other sources of light like fire-" He had immediately started rambling, thumbing through a notebook on the table beside his breakfast.

"Midoriya, you're rambling again." Todoroki's voice came from the couches.

"It's creepy, stop it." Mineta laid on one of the couch cushions.

"Oh! Sorry!" he quickly shut the book. "Can you train me sometime, Ms. (L/N)? I'd love to see your quirk up close."

"Sure, Midoriya. I wouldn't mind that." You gave a smile, "But, be warned, I can be strict."

"Mr. Aizawa is too! That's no problem for me!" He grinned, the excitement manifesting in the way he bounced his leg under the table.

You chuckled lightly and gave a slight wave, deciding to head outside for a breath of fresh air. You sat on a bench on the porch, looking out at the sky for a while. It was a calm day and the breeze was gentle against your skin.

"Good morning," his flat voice was characteristically familiar now.

You turned with a bright smile. "Good morning, Aizawa. How'd you sleep?"

"Not well," he sat down beside you. "But that's normal."

"Ah, I'm sorry." You rubbed the back of your neck, not quite sure what to say to that.

"It's fine, I'm used to it. I just don't get much sleep." He shrugged as if that were okay. "I saw you talking to the students in there."

"Oh?"

"You could really help Hagakure figure out new ways to control her quirk." He commented, "If you wouldn't mind."

"No, I'd love to! I'm here to help students, after all." You leaned your head back against the building, staring at the clouds. "When did you wanna go out today?"

"We can go now." He pushed himself onto his feet, his hands in his pockets as usual. "Get breakfast if you haven't had any."

"I haven't," you hopped onto your feet and began walking to the steps. "do you know any good breakfast places?"

The man seemed to think for a moment, before shaking his head slightly. "No, but I know someone who would." He pulled out his phone and tapped on a contact, sliding the phone up to his ear. You could hear the ringing as you shifted your weight from one foot to the other, humming to yourself as you waited. Aizawa's gaze stayed focused on you as he waited for the person to pick up.

"Yo!" Came a voice so loud that even you could hear it clearly. Aizawa flinched and pulled the phone a few inches away from his ear.

You giggled under your breath. Hizashi was just as lively as ever.

"Mic, what're some good breakfast places around campus?" Aizawa asked flatly into the phone. A small smile pulled at the corner of your lips, his demeanor somewhat amusing to you.

"Breakfast places?" The loud hero's voice swam in confusion. "You? Out to breakfast? Who is this, this isn't Aizawa? Shota Aizawa?"

You covered your mouth with your hand, soft laughs falling from your lips. Aizawa rolled his eyes at his best friend, glancing at you for a moment. "Yes, Shoto Aizawa. Eraserhead. Whatever you'd like to call me. Now, what are some good breakfast places?" He began tapping his foot on the brick path.

There was a prolonged silence on the other end and you almost thought that the man had ended the call, until his characteristically loud and boisterous laugh came through the speaker. Aizawa flinched once more, sighing to himself. "Okay, dude, I'll text you a few places, but the best waffles around town are at Granny's. It's down half a block."

"Great. Thanks." Aizawa ended the call before Mic could get another word in. "I'm assuming you heard that." He lifted his eye to find you a few feet ahead of him.

"Mhm!" You nodded, holding your hands behind your back as you walked. There was a bounce in your step, as per usual.

The two of you managed to find the cafe within a few minutes and you were seated in the back of the cafe. Your booth was beside a large window, the perfect view of a quaint street and the beautiful blue sky at your side. You rested your head on your hand and looked out the window in silence. Based off what you'd observed, Aizawa seemed to be on the quieter side and didn't necessarily like social interaction or talking when it wasn't needed. So, you were doing your darndest to keep your mouth shut unless you had something important to say.

A waitress came over not too much later and took your orders, after which, it was silent again. As much as you wanted to make sure he was comfortable, the silence was starting to make you antsy. What if you weren't saying enough? Was he wondering why you'd even invited him out? Your smile slipped away without you even noticing, replaced by an anxious bite of your lip and a furrowed brow.

"You can talk as much as you want." You whipped your head around to face the previously silent hero. "It won't make me uncomfortable."

"Oh-" You felt like the breath had been stolen from your lungs. How had he known exactly what you were thinking? "I just want to make sure you have a good time."

"That's nice, but you don't have to worry about making sure I'm comfortable. If I'm not, I'll tell you." He turned to look out the window. "You worry a lot about making sure others are feeling well, don't you?"

You gave a slow nod, your eyes fixated on the man as he looked outside. "Well, yeah, I guess so." You gave a slight shrug. "It's probably part of why I'm a hero."

"Yeah, that makes sense." He turned back to you, parting his lips to speak.

"Oh- oh my god! What is that? What's happening?" Panicked yelling began to fill the cafe.

You and Aizawa were up and scanning the scene without skipping a beat. A villain was outside, running down the street with a bag overflowing with money. You both rushed outside and Aizawa was quick to use his capture weapon, trapping the villain. The bags of cash spilt out onto the ground.

You lifted your hand, gesturing at the pavement. The light bent in such a way that it looked as if the money had completely disappeared. Two other men stood by what seemed to be the getaway car. "Where'd it go? It was right there!" One of them ran out to the road, trying to find the money, but you shot a beam of light just ahead of his feet. One centimeter more and you would've fried his toe off. He jumped back, "Who the hell are you? Get out of our way! I won't hesitate to use my quirk!"

You allowed the light reflecting off of your clothes to return to normal, revealing your white and yellow hero suit. You flicked your white hood over your head, the short cape flowing out behind you. "Go ahead and try." You hummed, glancing back at Aizawa.

"They're heroes! Come on, let's get out of here!" One of the men began trying to open the car door.

"Not so fast." You shot a beam of light at the door, aiming to weld the door shut. Before the two villains had a chance to use their quirks, Aizawa wrapped them up in his capture weapon. You clapped your hands together and gave him a smile. "Aren't we efficient?"

He held the scarf tight in his hand, his eyes red as he stared down the villains. "Can you contact the police?"

"Already on their way, Eraserhead!" Another hero stepped onto the scene. He seemed to be more of a local hero as you didn't immediately recognize him. "Thank you for your help, but we've got it from here." A few other heroes made their way onto the scene, tying up the villains as Aizawa let them go.

You gave the heroes a nod of thanks before turning to your coworker. "Shall we?" You playfully opened the door to the cafe and made a dramatic gesture for him to go in. You glanced up as he shuffled inside, catching a hint of a smile pulling at his lips.

Aizawa led the way back to your table, sliding back into his seat. You stood by the table for a moment, hovering a hand over your chest to bend the light and disappear your hero suit. You didn't catch the way Aizawa watched you, his eyes fixated. "That's smart," he murmured as you sat down.

"Thanks," you gave a smile, rubbing the back of your neck. "It's not always my favorite thing since it takes energy to do it."

"Oh, I see," he hummed, leaning slightly forward as he watched you. "Does that have any side effects?"

"When I'm really tired, it'll just stop working. It looks a bit like I'm glitching," you laughed. "It can also get really warm in the summertime, so I try not to do it too much then."

"Hm," he leaned back in the booth. "You have a lot of uses for your quirk, don't you?"

"Yeah!" you bounced a bit in your seat. "It took me a long time, but I tried really hard to be creative and figure out a different ways to use it! I studied light and all of its properties to really understand what the heck it was I was controlling, then I tried to figure out if my ideas were even really possible-" Your cheeks went bright pink, realizing how quickly you'd been speaking and just how much. "Oh, I'm so sorry! I got carried away." You looked away, covering your mouth.

"It's fine," Aizawa couldn't help the small smile tugging at his lips. You had clearly worked hard at mastering your quirk, but it wasn't just that. You were passionate about it. "Keep going." He finally added.

"Wait, really?" You turned back to him, your eyes slightly wide. His head moved just slightly in a nod as he watched you. "So, I would brainstorm different ways to manipulate it based off of what I'd learned about how it works. Then, I started trying out those different ways and, you know, some worked, like how I can hide things in plain sight, but others didn't."

"What ideas did you have that didn't work?" Aizawa asked, his voice holding a little more emotion than usual.

"I tried to change what people were seeing by manipulating the way the light hit their retinas, but it didn't work." You paused. "Well, at the time. Last time I tried that, I was in high school..." You lifted your hand, making a small ball of light appear in your hand. "Maybe I should try it again now. I could probably do it, don't you think?"

Aizawa was watching television ball of light in your hand. "With training. With all of the things you can do, you can learn with time."

You couldn't help the giddy feeling that pulsated in your chest. A new way to use your quirk! "I'll have to start training tomorrow." You spoke mostly to yourself with a small determined nod. You crushed the ball of light, letting it disappear in your fist.

"We have school tomorrow too, don't wear yourself out too much." You looked up at Aizawa, his gentle words catching you off guard. He picked up the menu right before the waitress came over.

"As a thanks for dealing with the villain outside, your meals are on the house!" The young girl smiled brightly, pulling out her notepad. "Can I just confirm your orders one more time?"

You gave the girl a sweet smile. "Oh, thank you! I was doing a waffle and apple juice."

"Black coffee and an omelette, please." Aizawa's gave the girl a curt nod before she left. "Apple juice?" he raised a brow at you.

"What? It's good!" You jokingly put your arms up.

He chuckled quietly. "Sure, (L/N)."

You weren't sure if it was because you hadn't heard it before, but that quiet laugh took the air out of your lungs. You bit the inside of your lip, a wide smile threatening to slip onto your cheeks. "Are you saying you've never had apple juice?" A teasing tone wrapped around the words.

He shook his head, "I'm more of an orange juice person."

"Orange juice!" You practically gasped. "That is the worst morning juice."

Aizawa cocked a brow once more. "And why would that be?"

"The taste! And orange pulp makes the drinking experience so much worse." You shook your head, making a face at even the thought of drinking orange juice.

Aizawa looked out the window, but not before you caught the glimpse of a smile on his lips. "It's the most nutritious."

"Hm, debatable." You shrugged, leaning back in your chair.

A comfortable silence settled over you both. The waitress came over a few minutes later with your orders and you thanked her with a smile. You began to dig into your meal, but not before sliding your tall glass of cold apple juice towards Aizawa. He lifted his head from his food, "What?" He cocked his head just slightly to the side.

"Try it." You smiled, ripping open a straw and dropping it in. "You've never had apple juice, right?"

"Are you okay with that?" He sat up, slowly wrapping his fingers around the glass and pulling it closer.

"I'm offering." You hummed, resting your elbows on the table and placing your head in your palms as you watched him try apple juice for the first time.

He wrapped his lips around the straw and took a slow sip. The moment the liquid reached his mouth, a grimace slid across his face. He pulled back, "Far too sweet."

You pouted as he gave the drink back. "So you must not like sweets at all, huh?"

He gave a shrug, taking a bite of his omelette. "I like some."

"Like?" You probed, beginning to cut into your gigantic waffle.

"Cheesecake," he answered quickly. "I like cheesecake. And mochi."

His subtly excited response made you grin. You took a bite of your food, humming happily at the taste. "Duly noted."

The rest of breakfast was full of small conversations here and there, as well as comfortable silences as you enjoyed your meals. You were by no means against a good silence, but you very much enjoyed the conversation that emerged from the breakfast. You'd gotten to know the quiet teacher a little better, and he, you.

"Ready to head back?" Aizawa asked, but he had already gotten out of his seat.

"Mhm," you hummed as you slid out of the booth. "Back to campus?"

The tall male gave a slight nod, heading for the door after thanking the waitress and cashier. You followed beside him, a half-step behind. The walk was silent for a while and you let your thoughts drift from the counting the bricks in the sidewalk to the shapes of the drifting clouds.

"You said you pay attention a lot to if someone is comfortable," Aizawa's voice caught you off-guard. "Why is that?"

"I didn't know you were still thinking about that." You flushed a bit. You hadn't thought that Aizawa was the type to think so carefully about your actions. "I guess it's because no one ever paid attention to me or cared about my presence growing up. I never want someone to feel like that when I'm around."

Silence settled between you two, only the clack of your heels and the hum of cars passing by filling the space.

"I see." Came his reply. "That's nice of you."

"I just try my best." You murmured in response. The UA dorms were only a few feet ahead of you, so you both made your way to the door. "Thank you for coming out with me, I had fun." You gave him a bright smile, reaching for the door handle.

He gave a slight nod. "You wanted to train your quirk tomorrow morning," he met your eyes. "What time?"

"Oh, I dunno, probably around 6. That's when I usually train."

"I'll be training then, too." He paused. "If you want to train together."

Your eyes brightened and you started nodding so fast that your head hurt. "That would be great!"

Aizawa hummed softly and gave a nod, "See you tomorrow."

You pulled open the door and he slid inside. "See you!" You were ecstatic at the idea of training with Aizawa. Not because it was him, but because you would have someone to push you to your limits and another person to test your quirk on. Aizawa was special because his quirk was based in his eyes, so you could test out your theory about bending light to change what another person sees.

But, you were also excited that Aizawa had seemed to warmed up to you a bit. After all, why else would someone who prefers to be alone give up their early morning alone-time?
