Chapter 7
Falling in love, February, 1780: Aspen
It's been almost six weeks since the party. Daniel and I have started becoming closer and closer. He comes to call often and I come to visit him in camp in my usual rounds to the other soldiers when I bring food.
I'm falling for him and falling hard. Perhaps I've finally found someone I'd be willing to spend me life with. My father has been pushing me to marry for six years now, since my 18th birthday. I want to find the right person before I even consider marrying.
Perhaps Daniel could be it. He's mentioned courtship at one point and I was definitely willing to think about it. Daniel is kind to me and isn't twice my age, which is very much so a plus. He's only two years older then me. The only reason my father wouldn't accept the marriage is the fact that Daniel doesn't have much money, having grown up on a tiny farm in Maryland.
Oh, but a girl can dream. I sigh heavily as I gather the reins of my brown and white horse which I named Rain. Daniel and I decided to meet for an afternoon ride, but he's late by almost ten minutes. I pet my horse's neck and wait for him quietly.
I suddenly hear the sound of horse hooves in snow from behind me and turn to see my beau riding up the hill on a beautiful dapple grey mount. He smiles at me when his eyes meet mine.
"You're late, Colonel." I say, smiling at him softly.
"My sincerest apologies, Ms. Laurens, but my horse was being difficult." He says. "Can you find it in your heart to forgive this poor soldier?"
I pretend to think. "I'll think about it." I state, smiling at him playfully.
He presses a hand to his heart jokingly. "You wound me, miss!" He says dramatically. "I beg of you, don't make me wait!"
I try to make a serious face and it results in both of us bursting into laughter. He rests a hand on top of mine.
"I'm very happy to see you again, Aspen." He says, using my given name.
"And I you, Daniel." I say, smiling at him as he plants a gentle kiss one the back of my gloved hand.
We start our ride in peaceful silence, riding just outside town. He rides beside me. We glace at each other every once and a while. The day has a chill to the air and the threat of more snow looms on the horizon. For now, however, it's nice enough to be outside and enjoy the fresh air.
"Have you thought about my question from last week?" He asks. "About courtship?"
"I have." I answers. "There's no doubt in my mind that I care for you, Daniel. And you wouldn't have asked if you did not care for me-"
"You misunderstand, Aspen." He says, grabbing my hand. "I've fallen in love with you. I never would've thought it possible in such a short time, but I have."
I feel my cheeks heat up and I know I'm probably as red as a beet. I struggle to find my words for a moment. I squeeze his hand. "You love me?" I ask softly.
A soft smile appears on his lips. "How could I not?" he asks. "You're an incredible woman, Aspen."
Now I know I'm as red as a beet. However, I can't help but find myself smiling. "I've fallen in love with you too." I say softly.
He smiles. "Is that a yes then?" He asks. "Do I have permission to court you?"
"Yes." I say smiling as he plants as long kiss to the back of my hand once more.
