BYEOL had almost no problem to pick a good house for Beomgyu to go at. She chose one which had only one lady residing at. It seemed to be a well to do house with less people to cook for. The hassle would be less as compared to the amount that was being offered. She was internally ashamed about making him work but she had no choice. Her own pathetic self couldn't get another chance to make a living.
She was sitting on a couch in the verandah. The weather was unexpectedly good for monsoon. The sky was clear with stars that twinkled like embellished sequins of an extravagant dress. The full moon with its admirable milky glow was out to boast that it was prettier than every maiden breathing on Earth.
Byeol took out a packet of cigarettes and a lighter from the pocket of her worn out embroidered cotton fabric that hugged her pale and frail figure. She lit one as she looked at the house opposite to hers with eyes that yearned to meet a particular someone's. She released puffs of sweet smoke into the cool air.
Nicotin helped her manage her composure at times when she felt distressed. It had been her silly idiosyncrasy since she moved out of her now much despised abode.
Wasn't he going to come out today?
Speak of the Devil! The guy she had been eagerly waiting for was finally making his appearance in his verandah. Byeol took in every detail of his face with the same amount of curiosity and ardent face. He was a smoker too.
Ryan. Ryan Ferrari.
He had managed to steal her heart away on the very first day she spotted him moving opposite to hers. She fancied him. She always did. The Italian man was a complete heartthrob. No guy managed to reach his level.
His burly physique was clad in a plain linen white shirt and cargo pants. Those twinkling blue eyes with a tint of joie de vivre was staring up at the watercolor painted welkin. His beautiful bright red lips were curled into a grin as he took another sip of coffee from his ceramic mug. When his eyes met hers he shot her his usual cosmic smile which made her skip a heartbeat.
His gregarious and swashbuckling nature always poured life into hers. She was a wilted flower looking for a reason to cling onto a false hope of blooming again. Their relationship as neighbours was confined to this leisure time at their verandahs. No words , no gestures. Just some smiles and stares. Her infatuated self was content with just that. She always waited for the night to prevail everyday. She was no Cinderella but he was prince Charming who seemed so near yet so far.
He was a sinful querencia for the time being.
" Are you here? I was -"
"Hush..."
Beomgyu was cut mid sentence by Byeol who didn't pull her eyes away from Ryan even for a second.
"Keep quiet for a few more minutes..."she pleaded as she grinded the remaining of her cigarette on the rough surface of the astray.
Beomgyu looked at the man who was being observed by the calm girl. He caught a glimpse of her cheeks burning into a deep shade of red as the subject of her admiration ran his hands through his platinum blonde hair while heading back inside.
"What are you doing? Care to explain to your dumbass 'guest'?"
"Umm... Just doing 'this' and 'that' I guess?"
"I can clearly see through you. Do you realise you are being way too obvious about your affection? Who's that dandy fellow by the way? Haven't seen him around."
"Pfft... You talk as if you were staying here for ages. He's Ryan Ferrari , my neighbour."
"You like him. Don't you?"
"Obviously. Is that even a question?"
"Did you confess?"
Byeol shook her head shyly showing her negative response to his burning question. Beomgyu led out a soft giggle and sat beside Byeol.
"I am not surprised to be honest. Judging by how introvert of a person you are , I bet that you never even thought about it." exclaimed the confident lad as he patted softly on the latter's head.
"He's older. I have just entered adulthood while he's a complete grown up. Let's say this sight pleases me more than a relationship which is made of promises that are not kept and words that are actually not meant."
"Why do you like him?"
"He's handsome."
"So you like his face not the person he is." sighed Beomgyu with disappointment clearly imprinted on his face.
"I love eye candies. I am afraid of people. They scare me. Why should I go ahead and make a bond with someone who will leave me crying at times when I need them the most? I can discard them off without any strings attached. They won't make me reconsider since they won't be someone special. Just an acquaintance whom I liked just like the aroma of chocolate cakes from a factory. Eating the cake would spoil the fun since it wouldn't be there for long. "
"Not everyone is an asshole. Then what about me? Do you really not want to be my friend?"
"I don't know. I will be honest. I felt that maybe you might be different. You as a person didn't seem calculative. You had no one to take care of you here and I happened to be entangled with you in an unexpected mess."
Beomgyu nodded as he grinned.
"I won't make you question me. Ever."
"That's good to hear."
Life offered her a new person in her life. Maybe trying to understand another person again was worth giving a try. Maybe he would be a friend that she's always secretly wanted to be there for her. Maybe he would be the one to hold an umbrella on her bare head when it rained.
She just wanted a friend somewhere in her heart.
