Chapter 4: Feeling Good- The First day
Clive tapped impatiently wearing his new ambulance gear waiting for Brandon to turn up to their first day at their new job.
Brandon knew how important this was to him and get he decides it's good practice to be late. Clive tuts to himself, That is something he's gonna have to straighten out sharpish because that isn't a good prospect when your trying to impress future employees.
He often wondered what Ada would think of this. The reason why he hid it from her in the first place is because she would be mad purely due to the fact she has a past with him perhaps.
Of course he also wondered how his and Ada's relationship has survived over the years since school especially because their relationship was purely the result of an Affair.
Finally after nearly 15 minutes, Brandon turns up. He gets out a car with his trousers falling down his ankles.
Clive looks at him angrily, "And What time do you call this? Ada doesn't know about this and I'm doing this for her but you are making a absolute fool of yourself, Did you get high last night?"
Brandon pulls up his trousers sheepishly, "Maybe I have.. But Clive we were celebrating you getting me a job and helping me and all that."
Clive squares up to him, "That's got to stop from now on, So you hear me? If you want to change your life around you gotta listen to me, But the first time.. THE FIRST TIME..You slip up and I'll wash my hands off you and you'll be back to square one, Are we clear?"
Brandon nodded. "You're right I'm sorry I screwed up, I seem to do a lot of that lately."
Clive sighs, "For God's sake this is a place of work they aren't gonna take pity on you so I suggest you get a shower in the building and I'll cover you."
Brandon didn't need telling twice. He ran straight to the bathroom and showered whilst his friend Clive Powers guarded the access to the room with the shower.
Suddenly the boss of the paramedic station walks toward Clive looking at him suspiciously, "Why are you standing there like that blocking the doorway to the shower is everything ok?"
He nodded. "Everything is fine, Just my colleague is having a shower, You see he had an accident because he um, Wet himself because of how incredibly nervous he was for his first day..He's desperate to make a good first impression you see."
The Boss nodded awkwardly. "I see, Does this happen often?"
Clive shook his head. "Actually it's the first time it's happened sir."
The Boss smiles sympathetically, "In that case if it happens again tell him to go and see his GP."
Clive nodded. "I'll be sure to pass on the message."
10 minutes later Brandon came out the shower. "Thanks for covering for me."
Clive grimaces, "You might not thank me yet, I had to tell the boss that you peed yourself."
Brandon looked at him angrily, "YOU..DID WHAT?! Well done that's a great first impression really.. I'm definitely going to NOT get the job now aren't I?!"
Clive shrugs, "I had to say something didn't I? As I recall it's your fault for being late and out all night doing drugs so if you don't want them to find out that little fact..I suggest you get on with it."
Brandon looks at him still evidently annoyed. "Whatever."
They walk into a large room together packed with ambulances and first response cars. The Boss of the station also known as the teacher of this crash course in how to be a paramedic was standing there in front of other students attending the course.
Standing beside him were real experienced paramedics. He calls everyone for a bit of hush and speaks aloud to everyone, "Now that we've all arrived here I would like to welcome you to your first day as a student Paramedic, How this works is you'll be paired with our experienced paramedics on call outs and you'll be in the classroom as well as taking exams but be warned those who fail will not make the cut and join our team as a fully qualified paramedic."
He then turns to each of them in turn and pairs them up with each of the experienced paramedics. Eventually he turns to Clive and Brandon. "Clive you'll be with Richard and Brandon isn't it? You'll be with Lexi."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Six hours later their shift was finally over. Clive and Brandon were back at the ambulance station helping their mentors Richard and Lexi tidy the medicines in the back of the ambulance and tick them off on a clipboard so that they can ensure nothing is missing.
Clive walks over to Brandon who was standing outside the ambulance next to Clive's own ambulance. He elbowed Brandon, "Well that was harder than I thought.. Fancy a pint?"
Brandon nodded. "After that shift.. Why not?"
15 minutes later Brandon and Clive sat opposite each other with a pint in their hands. Brandon looked drained and shattered and slightly annoyed. "I swear if we ever have another shift like that I am out!"
Clive rolls his eyes. "Oh Don't say that!, You love it really, Admit it."
Brandon sighs, "The false alarms I definitely hate but helping people would be a bonus I guess."
Clive shrugs, "They did say that would happen.. I guess it's just the way the job is and there's nothing we can do to change it we just gotta get on with it."
Brandon nods, "Maybe your right." He steers the conversation into more serious things that they both knew they needed to talk about but they were both avoiding it. "So are you going to tell Ada about me?"
Clive sighs, "Which part? The fact I'm in touch with you or the fact I've helped you get a job?"
Brandon grinned at him, "Well, Obviously both."
He looks at Brandon unsure. "I'll be honest with you, I'm seriously considering it as we have no secrets but whichever part I tell her, Either way I'm dead."
Brandon chuckles half heartedly, "It's like you said, You don't have any secrets so is it better to just get it all out in the open?"
Clive looks at him impressed. "Wow that's big coming from you.. Has today turned you into a guru or something? You're right of course."
He looks at his watch and then back at Brandon, "I'm off home, Wish me luck, Considering our past and all.. I just might need it."
Brandon pays his shoulder as Clive gets up. "I honestly hope you'll never do. I'm secretly hoping she'll realize I've turned a corner."
Clive smiles at Brandon. "Well if she understands what this means to us then maybe she'll see it for herself one day."
He added as a parting shot before he leaves, "No drinking stupidly and No staying out all night getting high because that's gotta stop you have a job now with responsibility so don't be late."
Brandon winks and clicks his fingers. "You got it Boss!"
Suddenly Brandon was left alone at his empty table with a pint in his hand and left alone with only his thoughts. He thought a lot about his past with Ada and he was determined to prove Ada and his parents wrong.
Maybe this job is a good place to start after all?
