AN INEVITABLE INTRUDER

CHAPTER 24

NAINA...

Our friends had already reached Mr. Vijay Mittals's place along with Nanu & Maa while we were on the way. I was a little nervous after all the revelations happened last night. I didn't know what I would do when that person would come face to face with me. I just wish that I could control my expressions & body language in front of that person.

Sameer sensed my nervousness & squeezed my hand slightly bringing me back to reality. "Naina... Itna mat socho... jo bhi hoga wohh accha hi hoga aur hum milkar sab thik kar denge. Main hun na tumhare saath, fir kyun itna nervous ho rahi ho?" "Pataa nahi Sameer... par mujhe thodi ghabraahat si ho rahi hai."

"Naina... tum jitna jyada sochogi utna tumhe hi taklif hogi. Aaj jo bhi hoga usse karna zaruri hai warna hamari tarah dusri company ko bhi nuksaan ho sakta hai. Aaj agar humne Kartik ko expose nahi kiya toh wohh kal kisi aur company ke saath bhi yahi karega, jo main hone nahi de sakta. Tum bilkul bhi ghabrao mat, aaj sab thik ho jaayega."

My heart finally calmed down a little & we reached Mr Mittal's house in the next ten minutes. As we entered, we met many known faces on the way. The garden was beautifully decorated. My eyes finally spotted our friends & we made our way towards them. The waiter was beside us within a minute holding a tray full of soft drinks.

We mingled with others while my eyes were searching for the traitor. After few minutes, we approached Mr Vijay Mittal, "Happy Birthday Vijay Sir." I said looking around as many of the office associates were standing surrounding him & it won't look nice to call him Vijay uncle in front of them.

He shook hands with us & then asked us if we are ready with the presentation as we would be the first ones to present it in front of everyone. Sameer replied confidently, "I'm ready Sir. Let me get in touch with the technical people & I would start with my presentation."

Mr Mittal smiled & called out someone who would guide us to the stage & connect our presentation to the big screen that was placed at the corner of the garden. We left with that person & started our preparations with our friends helping us around.

Kartik who was standing with few of his colleagues came to us & remarked, "Arey... tum log kyun sab taiyaari kar rahe ho. Pehle toh humari company presentation denewaali hai, uske baad tumhara turn hai." I just wanted to turn around & slap him square on his face but somehow controlled my anger.

"Tumse kisne kahaa ki tum pehle presentation doge Kartik?", Sameer asked with a smirk. He furrowed his eyebrows when again Sameer asked, "Bolo na??? Tumhe Mr Mittal ne kahaa hai kya ki tum presentation pehle doge?" Kartik looked around to find Mr Mittal when again my better half spoke, "Tum agar Mr Mittal ko dhoond rahe ho toh main tumhe bataa dun, ki unhone hi hume pehle hamara presentation dene ko kahaa hai, isliye toh hum yahaan sab taiyaari kar rahe hai."

I was getting so irritated with Kartik's presence that I couldn't hold onto my anger anymore & exploded, "Mr Kartik Singhania... Could you just move away, you are actually disturbing us here?" The others who were already watching us interact were more interested now. Sameer got hold of my hand & we got back to our work.

After ten minutes we were done & the people gathered around the stage. Our friends, Nanu & Maa stood near us for moral support while Kartik alongwith Sunaina sat in the front row. Mr Mittal went up on stage & took the mike, "Good evening ladies & gentlemen... Main bohot khush hun aaj, ek toh aaj mera birthday hai aur dusra mujhe mere company ke liye naya partner mil jaayega. Toh ab main jyada baat nahi karunga aur Sameer se request karta hun ki wohh apna presentation hume dikhaaye. Naina tum quotation mere assistant ko submit kardo."

I handed over the quotation file to his assistant & joined our friends. Sameer took his place on the stage near the screen & the lights were dimmed. He started explaining each & every slide of our PowerPoint presentation, there were few questions asked by Mr Mittal & also by the other board of directors. Sameer replied them confidently as we had already discussed them earlier.

I could see everyone happy with the way Sameer was putting forth his plans after he would be a partner of Mittal Empire. We had made the plans in the presentation in such a way that it would be beneficial for us as well as the Mittal group. We had kept in mind each & every aspect which would be profitable for everyone. Our main focus was the customers & keeping their needs & expectations in mind, we had made up a solid plan.

And we were happy that everyone was satisfied seeing it. We finished our presentation in an hour. And then Kartik was called upon stage to start with his presentation. All of us settled down in front of the screen to see what Kartik was going to present. I just wished everything would go as Sameer had planned.

The moment Kartik started his presentation, he fumbled looking at the numbers showcased on the screen, even the charts weren't up to the mark. Sameer pressed my hand & I glanced his way to see him smiling. So, he had definitely changed the numbers at the last moment. But what disturbed me more was that how could Kartik not see it before. I'm sure that he must have gone through the whole presentation to prepare himself for tonight. Then how come he couldn't see through such huge mistakes...

Mr Mittal got up & asked, "Kartik... What is all this? Is this some kind of a joke for you? You aren't even able to give the presentation properly. Yeh tumne hi banaaya hai na? Fir yeh sab dekhkar itne hairaan kyun ho rahe ho? Infact, tumhe toh sab mooh zubaani yaad hona chahiye. What is going on huh??? I didn't expect you to be so irresponsible Kartik, especially after the first presentation you gave us."

Kartik glared at us & got down the stage. The lights were switched on & everyone got up from their seats to see what Kartik had to say. We stood a little away watching him who was trying to convince Mr Mittal to give him another chance. All the guests too were watching the scene with sheer interest.

Mr Mittal walked up on stage & announced, "Ladies & gentleman... aap sabne dekha yahaan kya hua toh main apni company, Mittal Empire ki partnership Maheshwari Industries ke saath karna chahunga." The moment he said it, Kartik shouted, "Aap aisa nahi kar sakte Mr Mittal, main keh raha hun na bas thodi gadbad ho gayi hai presentation mein, main abhi change kar deta hun. Aap yeh partnership Sameer ko nahi de sakte, aapko meri hi company ke saath partnership karni chahiye Mr Mittal."

Mr Vijay Mittal glared at him, "Main meri company mein kise partner banaaunga yeh mera faisla hai aur abhi yahaan jo kuch bhi hua wohh sabne dekha, uske bawajood tum chaahte ho ki main tumhari company ke saath partnership karun? Mr Kartik Singhania... main tumhe bewakoof lagta hun ki main apni company ka partner usse banau jo thik se presentation bhi na de paaye? Mera decision ekdum fair hai Kartik aur yahaan khada ek ek insaan mere decision se sehmat hoga. Chahiye toh tum khud pooch lo..."

Kartik turned to his friends from other companies who looked away. No one took a stand for him, no one helped him to convince Mr Mittal for another chance. Kartik couldn't believe that he had lost the most precious partnership which could have saved his company from going bankrupt. His company was running in losses from last few months & so he was desperate to win this partnership.

Kartik turned around searching for us & then finally he caught sight of us. He strode towards us fuming in anger. Before he could say anything, Sameer started, "Kya hua Kartik? Tum toh sahi se apna banaaya hua presentation bhi nahi samjha paaye Mr Mittal ko? Tumne presentation ek baar bhi check nahi kiya tha yahaan aane se pehle???"

Kartik fumed more, "Main jaanta hun yeh sab teri hi wajah se hua hai Sameer. Tune hi kuch gadbad ki hai. Bol kya kiya tune???" Sameer acted innocent, "Main... bhala main kyun yeh sab karunga? Mujhe aur koi kaam nahi hai, jo tere presentation me interest lun." He laughed, "Paagal samjha hai kya mujhe???" Sameer too chuckled, "Uss mein samajne waali kya baat hai?"

Unable to control his anger, Kartik screamed, "Tune cheating ki hai Sameer?" I stood in front of him, "Hum kyun cheating karenge Kartik? Hamara presentation toh sabne dekha yahaan aur sabko pasand bhi aaya. Agar tum apna khud ka banaaya hua presentation hi thik se na de paao toh isme hamari kya galti? Inn sab mein humne kahaan cheating ki? Tumhare aur hamare presentation mein zameen aasmaan ka farak bhi hai, toh fir tum hum par cheating ka ilzaam nahi lagaa sakte Kartik."

"Yeh kya apna banaaya hua, apna banaaya hua presentation lagaa rakhha hai? Mera wala presentation bhi tum dono ne hi banaaya tha naa toh fir itna difference kaise ho sakta hai dono presentations mein? Bolo???" There he had said it & the others were shocked to hear that revelation.

Mr Mittal came ahead & asked, "Mr Kartik Singhania... Yeh kya bol rahe ho tum? Jaante ho iska kya matlab nikalta hai? Yahi ki tumne cheating ki hai aur dono baar tumne Sameer ke presentations churaaye hai." Kartik instantly realized his folly & calmed down, "Mr Mittal... mere kehne ka wohh matlab nahi tha. Wohh... wohhh... main toh yeh keh raha tha ki inhone cheating ki hai."

Mr Mittal walked up on stage again & one more presentation played on the big screen drawing everyone's attention. It was the same fake presentation that Sameer had sent to him the previous morning. Kartik stood rooted to his spot after seeing the same presentation that he had stolen from Sameer's computer.

"Mr Kartik Singhania... Kya yahi aapka banaaya hua presentation hai???", Mr Vijay Mittal asked with a blank face. Kartik didn't know what to reply as he was already in shock. He must be thinking that how come this presentation was available with Mr Mittal. "Tum yahi soch rahe ho na ki yeh mere paas kahaan se aaya Kartik???"

Kartik didn't react at all & sat down on the chair with a thud as his own cheating was out in front of the whole lot of people. Mr Mittal continued, "Yeh presentation mujhe Sameer ne kal subah hi bhej diya tha aur usne kahaa tha mujhe ki yahi presentation tum aaj iss party mein doge. Ab yeh mat kehna ki Sameer ne tumhara presentation churaaya, kyunki uss presentation par Sameer ne har ek slide par apne company ka watermark choda hai, jo tumhare presentation mein bhi dikh raha hai. Tumne Sameer ka presentation churaa toh liya par wohh watermark mitaana bhool gaye Kartik."

Kartik froze at his open declaration that he had cheated. Mr Mittal continued, "Tumne pehli baar bhi yahi galti kar di Kartik aur iss baar bhi. Tumne aur tumhari team ne itni badi galti kaise kar di? Itni important marking tumhare nazar mein kaise nahi aayi? Jab log cheating karte bhi hai toh aise karte hai ki kisiko uska pataa na chale. Aur tum toh cheating bhi thik se nahi kar paaye. Khair chodo. Tum kabhi acche businessman nahi bann paaoge??? Mujhe mere business mein koi cheaters nahi chahiye. Maine tumhe second chance diya tha, kyunki pehli baar mein hi tumhari yeh chori pakdi gayi thi. Hum dekhna chaahte the ki tum dusri baar kya karoge? Sameer ne sahi kahaa, tum sach mein paagal hi ho, jo koi kaam dhang se nahi kar sakte."

"Jab maine tumhari aur Sameer ki company shortlist ki tabhi mujhe kai logon ne tumhari company ka status bataaya aur humne khud sab information bhi nikaali thi. Mujhe pataa hai ki tumhari company almost band hone ke kagaar par hai, toh tum aisa kuch ghatiya kaam zaroor karoge. Isliye hamare log tum par aur tumhari team par nazar rakkhe hue the."

"Aur baaki ki help mujhe Sameer ne kar di. Usse toh pehle se hi pataa tha ki tumne uska presentation churaaya hai, fir bhi usne kuch nahi kiya. Infact yeh dusre presentation ka idea bhi Sameer ka hi tha. Main toh first time mein hi meri company ki partnership Maheshwari Industries ko dena chaahta tha par Sameer ne manaa kar diya. Wohh jaanna chaahta tha ki uski company mein kaun hai jo uski presentation aur quotation churaakar tumhe deta tha. Toh bas main bhi maan gaya aur maine yeh sab naatak kiya."

Sameer walked to the chair where Kartik was sitting, "Ab khud kabool karoge yaa main apne tareeke se ugalwaaun?" Kartik started laughing loudly, confusing us, "Tumhe kya lagta hai Sameer ki tum yeh watermark waali story sunaakar yeh prove kar paaoge ki maine tumhare dono presentations churaaye hai?"

Sameer walked around his chair & chuckled too, "Main tumhare jaise paagal nahi hun Kartik. Mujhe pataa tha ki tum aisa hi kuch bologe. Thik hai. Main abhi yahaan sabke saamne yeh prove kar sakta hun ki tumne hamare banaaye hue presentations aur quotations churaaye hai. Dekhna chaahoge???"

I saw Kartik sweating after hearing Sameer's words & he stammered, "Aisa... aisa... nahi ho sakta... main itna bhi paagal nahi hun ki maine koi saboot choda ho?" Sameer laughed alongwith us. Unable to control myself, I spoke, "Maine tumse bada bewakoof kahin nahi dekha Kartik, jo yahaan sabke saamne yeh bol raha ki hum tumhari chori prove nahi kar paayenge. I hope you know that this is almost like you've accepted your cheating. Zara nazar ghumaakar dekho sabko, tumne sabke saamne yeh confess kar liya ki tumne hamare mehnat se banaaye hue presentations & quotations churaaye hai aur keh rahe ho ki hamare paas koi saboot nahi hai saabit karne ke liye. Mr Kartik Singhania... hamare paas saboot toh hai aur hum yahin sabke saamne sab dikhayenge. Sabko pataa bhi chalna chahiye na ki tumne kaise sab manage kiya aur kisne tumhari help ki."

Sameer continued, "Humne yeh second presentation waala naatak isiliye toh kiya tha taaki hume hamare company ka gaddar mil sake aur wohh hume mil gaya hai..." Sameer turned to Mr Mittal who once again played something on the screen & everyone including Kartik gasped watching the same video clip of the person who was copying the presentation & quotation from Sameer's computer in the pen drive.

Sameer called up someone & after few minutes, we saw the police inspector walking towards us with the main culprit who was being dishonest to our company by stealing & leaking important things to our rivals. When they reached us, I instantly moved ahead & slapped that person with all the strength I could.

"How could you do this with us Kamya??? Maine tumhe apni friend samjhaa aur tum humse hi gaddari kar rahi thi. Kitna bharosa tha hum sabko tum par aur tum... tum hamare bharosa ka aisa faayda uthaaogi, yeh maine kabhi nahi socha tha. Kya kami thi huh? Sameer ne sabse jyada salary package tumhe hi offer kiya hai, tumhare har loan bina kuch pooche sanction kiya hai, company ki har ek cheez tumhe pataa thi. Tum kitne saalon se ho Sameer ki assistant, tab toh tumne aisa kuch nahi kiya, toh ab kyun? Bolo Kamya??? Tumne yeh sab paison ke liye toh nahi kiya hai, yeh hum sab jaante hai kyunki tum khud ek ameer khaandaan se ho. Bolo Kamya... Kyun kiya yeh sab??? Kyun toda hamara vishwas???"

Sameer didn't utter a word but I could see that he was controlling his anger on her. I know how much he was hurt after knowing that Kamya was the one who was giving away our secrets to Kartik. He had trusted her too much. I could see the rage that was turning into a storm in his eyes, but yet he was in control.

Everyone raised questions at her but she remained quiet. She stood in front of us with her lowered head. Even after so much questioning from us she didn't speak up & then Sameer asked the inspector to bring the other person too. This time Kamya looked up & then turned to see Hema being held by a lady police constable.

Hema was one of the girls who was terminated from our company by Sameer. She was the one who had spread the rumors about me in the company. Last night when we saw her with Kamya, we were more than shocked. Sameer had asked his sources to find out the connection between the two girls & this revelation had left us stumped.

"How dare you bring Hema into all this?", Kamya shouted. We didn't answer her & she tried to wiggle out from the lady constable's hold, but wasn't successful. I stood right in front of her & asked again, "Tumne yeh sab kyun kiya Kamya? Kyun???" She looked straight in my eyes & stated, "Yeh sab maine tumhari wajah se kiya hai Naina. Sirf tumhari wajah se..."

I was baffled with her declaration. How could I be the reason for her conspiracy against our company? And what did she mean by I was responsible for all this? I took a step ahead & asked in a firm tone, "Meri wajah se??? Maine kya kiya hai??? Wohh main hi thi jisne sabse pehle tumse dosti ki thi."

She laughed, "Dosti??? Par maine toh tumhe kabhi apna dost nahi maana. Tum jab se company mein aayi thi tab se meri dushman hi ho. Jab tak tum Sameer ki life mein nahi aayi thi, tab tak main khush thi par tumhare aane ke baad sab badal gaya. Sameer ko toh tumhare alaawa kuch aur dikhta hi nahi hai. Jab dekho tab tumhare aage peeche hi ghoomte rehte hai. Jab dekho tab Naina... Naina... Naina..."

"Unhone kisi ladki ko kabhi itna bhaav nahi diya tha jitna tumhe de rahe hai. Tum jaanti bhi nahi ki main Sameer se kitna pyaar karti hun. Maine unki picture ek magazine ke cover par dekhi thi aur tab se mann banaa liya tha ki agar main shaadi karungi toh sirf Sameer se. Isliye maine unke company mein unke assistant ki job ke liye apply kiya, taaki main unke paas reh sakun aur unhe apna pyaar dikha sakun. Par Sameer ne toh kabhi aankh uthaakar nahi dekha mujhe, jab dekho tak sirf kaam, kaam, kaam..."

"Maine fir bhi haar nahi maani, main hamesha unke aas paas hi rehti thi aur ussi mein khush thi kyunki main jaanti thi ki unki life mein koi girlfriend nahi hai. Par jabse tum aayi ho, Sameer badalne lage, tumhare aage peeche ghoomne lage, jo mujhe bilkul bhi accha nahi lag raha tha. Isliye maine tumse dosti ka naatak kiya taaki tumhare paas rehkar sab jaan sakun."

I couldn't believe my ears. I was about to stumble when Sameer caught hold of me from behind & pulled me in his arms. Kamya continued, "Wohhh main hi thi jisne unn teeno ladkiyon ko tumhare baare mein rumors failane ko bola tha. Mujhe lagaa tha ki tum itna sab hone ke baad Sameer se durr ho jaaogi par nahi, tum toh fevicol ki tarah Sameer se chipki rahi aur tumhare pyaar mein Sameer ne unn teeno ladkiyon ko job se nikaal diya, hamari company se baahar phenk diya. Unn teeno ne mere kehne pe sab kiya tha, pataa hai aaj tak mujhe unhe paise dene pad rahe hai kyunki meri wajah se unki job gayi thi."

I was beyond shocked. This girl, whom I called my friend, wanted to ruin my character in front of the whole office. Behind my back, she was conspiring to separate me from Sameer, my love. How could she do this? How did I trust her so much? How could she break Sameer's & my trust?

Sameer stepped in front of me, "Hema se tumhara kya rishta hai Kamya? Tumne yeh toh bataa diya ki tumne Naina ke baare mein office mein rumors spread kiye the, ab yeh bhi bataa do ki Hema tumhari kya lagti hai? Sirf main hi wohh kaaran nahi hun, jiski wajah se tumne itna sab kuch kiya. Toh ab mujhe yeh batao ki Hema tumhari kya lagti hai???"

When Kamya didn't reply, Sameer walked towards Hema & I tagged along with him holding his arm. "Hema... Kamya toh kuch bol nahi rahi hai, toh tum kuch bolna chahogi? Yaa main inn lady constables ko bolun unki tarah se poochne ko? Fir mat kehna ki maine shanti se nahi poocha pehle. I'm giving you two options right now Hema, either you tell me yourself or these constables would make you speak up in their way. So, the choice is yours..."

I could see Hema shivering under the constable's hold. She stuttered, "Wohhh... wohhh... main Kamya ki best friend hun, hum school time se hi saath hain. Usne mujhe Sameer ke baare mein sab bataaya tha aur Kamya ki wajah se hi mujhe bhi Maheshwari Industries mein job mila tha. Main uski best friend toh thi hi par bohot baar usne mujhe aur meri family ko financially bhi support kiya tha, isliye jab Kamya ne mujhe Naina ke khilaaf sab bolne ko kahaa toh main manaa nahi kar paayi. Jab hume Sameer ne job se nikaala toh hume bohot gussa aaya tha, khaaskar Naina par, kyunki yeh sab uski wajah se hi hua tha. Main jaanti thi ki Kamya Sameer se bohot pyaar karti hai aur isliye maine hi Kamya ko ek din Kartik se milne ko kahaa, taaki hum dono ka badla poora ho jaaye."

Kamya continued, "Itna sab kiya humne par tum dono ko alag nahi kar paaye, maine socha agar Sameer nahi mila toh main uski company ko hi tabaah kar deti hun. Main Hema ke saath Kartik se mili aur maine hi tumhare presentations aur quotations churaakar usse diye, jisse Sameer aur Naina sab kuch haar jaaye. Main jaanti thi ki yeh partnership kitni important hai tum dono ke liye aur bas main yahi tum dono se chinna chahti thi, isliye Kartik se haath milaaya. Maine dosti ki aad mein sab pataa lagaana chaha par kuch dinon se maine dekha ki sab apne kaam mein itne busy hai ki kuch bolte hi nahi the office mein. Mujhe iss baar pataa hi nahi chala ki Sameer ne presentation aur quotation ready kar diya hai, wohh toh jab Kartik ne phone karke bataaya tab maine waapis apni pendrive mein sab copy kar liya."

Sameer laughed, "Aur yahin tumne sabse badi galti kar di Kamya. Maine do hafte pehle hi sabke cabins mein aur office ke entrance par CCTV cameras lagaa diye the. Hume bhi sab kal raat hi pataa chal gaya tha. Hume sabse bada shock tab lagaa jab humne Hema ko tumhare saath dekha entrance par."

Sameer turned to Kartik, "Maine jaanbujhkar tujhe uksaaya tha uss din café mein ki mera presentation ready hai. Tune hadbadi mein Kamya ko phone kiya aur fir hume raat tak sab sach pataa chal gaya. Mujhe toh ek hafte pehle hi Kamya par shak ho gaya tha. Bas mujhe koi thos saboot chahiye tha uske khilaaf jo khud tum dono ne mujhe saamne se de diya."

I continued, "Maine sapne mein bhi nahi socha tha ki Kamya tum hamare saath aisa karogi. Kitna bharosa kiya tha maine tum par, infact meri wajah se mere friends bhi tum par bharosa karne lage the. Aaj ke baad kisi ko apna dost banane se pehle main hazaar baar sochungi Kamya. Tum dosti ke naam par dhabba ho, tumne dosti ke naam par Hema ki majboori ka faayda uthaaya aur usse inta ghilona kaam karvaaya. Mera character kharaab karne chali thi tum?"

Kamya shouted, "Toh aur kya karti main huh??? Tum meri aankhon ke saamne mera pyaar chinn rahi thi toh main kya haath par haath dhare rehti. Tumne mujhse Sameer cheena hai toh main aise kaise tumhe jeetne deti. Main... Main Sameer se peechle paanch saalon se pyaar karti hun, aur tumhe yahaan aaye ek saal bhi nahi hua aur mere pyaar ko mujhse chinn liya. Agar tum nahi aati na beech mein , toh aaj Sameer mera hota, sirf Mera..."

Sameer couldn't take anymore & shouted, "Tum isse pyaar kehti ho? Naina ka character kharaab karna, hamari company ki important presentations churaakar hamare rivals ko dena, yeh sab tumne tumhare ego ke liye kiya Kamya. Tumhe koi pyaar vyaar nahi hai mujhse aur agar hota naa toh samaj jaati ki main kitna pyaar karta hun Naina se. Tum mere liye pehle se sirf meri assistant thi. Maine kabhi tumse personal baatein karne ki koshish tak nahi ki kyunki jaanta tha ki tumhe mujhpar crush hai. Dikhta tha tumhari harkaton mein, par main tumhare kaam se khush tha isliye tumhari har harkat ko ignore kiya. Tumne sabse pehle mera hi trust toda hai Kamya aur fir Naina ka."

Sameer held my hand & walked towards Mr Mittal, "Thank you Sir. Agar aap hamari help nahi karte toh pataa nahi meri company kaise bacha paata main." Mr Mittal asked, "Sameer... ab yeh bhi bataa do ki tumhe Kamya par shak kaise hua? Usne kuch toh kiya hoga jisse tumhari nazar mein aayi wohh... Aur Kartik ke presentation mein sab figures aur charts kaise change hue?"

Sameer smiled, "Mujhe kisine bataaya ki wohh Kamya hi hai jisne hamare presentation aur quotation churaaye the pehli baar aur usine Kartik ka presentation bhi kharaab kiya."
