Prologue
What to do with a degree in Fashion Design?
Adrien Agreste has been asking himself that question ever since he graduated with the degree two years ago in a university that his parents chose.
But here's the thing.
His parents chose the university...but not the course. In fact, they were against him taking up fashion design as a course. They were hoping for him to pass for a business course or even engineering!
Adrien could never forget their reactions when he received his entrance letter to the university but not to the course that they wanted.
His father choked on his celebratory beer while his mother chose to just smile at him while she gave a glass of water to her husband.
"Congratulations, Adrien!" His mother, Amelie, exclaimed and stood to give him a hug.
Adrien wrapped his arms around his mother and gave a few awkward pats on her back.
"T-Thanks, mother."
"At least, my boy," Gabriel, his father, also exclaims once his throat has cleared, "you graduate from that university!"
"I guess that's something good out of the announcement," Adrien utters as his mother pulls away from the hug.
"Just," his father continues in a hushed voice, "don't tell people about your course, okay?"
And Adrien had to live like that for his whole life in university. When his other relatives would ask what his course was his default answer would always be, "Well, it's a course where you consider using a lot of your brain cells."
"Ah, so you got a business management course?"
"Wow, architecture! Not bad!"
"Damn, man! Aeronautics engineering? When you become a pilot let me fly for free!"
And Adrien said yes to all assumptions. It made his relatives shut up.
He has moved to the capital for the past two years and now with taking different jobs he could right off the bat, he's tired of jumping from convenience store to convenience store.
Sure, there would be times when what he learned from his course helped him with graphic designing since designing clothes did not really help much with earning money.
But Adrien wants something more than that.
Now he's walking down the street early in the morning to get a bit of sunlight since vitamin E is good for the body...or was it D?
"Ahhh," he groans out loud and scratches his head in frustration. "Why do I have to be stupid?"
Adrien stops and raises his head to look at the sky. "If there's a God in the heavens!" He shouts, "Let me out of this hellhole called 'unemployment'! Send me a sign, God! I don't know what to do with my degree!"
The answer of God: Nothing.
After shouting, Adrien heard nothing. It was even stupid of him to just shout out loud when he knew that there are still some people sleeping.
He lowers his head in dismay and continues his walk. Seeing an empty can by the side of the road, he kicks it.
CRASH!
Adrien's head flies up once he hears that loud sound. Thinking it was because of the can he kicked, he starts to get worried.
Oh.
It's just an elderly woman who fell from her bike.
Adrien looks away in relief...then does a double-take.
IT'S AN ELDERLY WOMAN WHO FELL FROM HER BIKE!
He immediately runs and kneels in front of the woman. She groans with her eyes closed and holds onto her chest, breathing heavily.
"H-Hello?" He taps the woman then shakes her gently, "Are...are you okay?" He asks, his voice shaking out of fear. He could feel his heart beating out of his chest. He was starting to sweat all over - cold sweat.
The woman closes her eyes and lets out a deep breath until she does not move at all.
"Ma'am? Ma'am?!"
Oh God. Is she dead?! I ASKED FOR A SIGN, GOD! THIS IS NOT THE SIGN I ASKED FOR.
"Oh my God," he mutters and runs his hand through his face, "I killed a woman. I couldn't help her and now she's dead!"
"No, no." Adrien slaps himself, "get a hold of yourself!"
He grabs his cellphone from his pocket and dials for an ambulance to come. "H-Hello?" He speaks into the phone, "I'm with an unconscious woman right now. I think she fell from her bike. And...and we're by 17th-18th street."
The emergency responder tells him that an ambulance is on its way and the call disconnects. Now, Adrien does not know what to do.
Maybe the only thing left...is to shout.
"Help! Someone HELP!" He shouts out loud. But curse this new morning and people sleeping, no one is out and about around this time of the day. "Help!" He shouts again, "Someone help please!"
A morning jogger then spots him because of his loud cries for help and she rushes to the woman on the ground.
"Can...can you help?" Adrien asks as he moves back when the woman places her ear near the elderly woman's nose.
The new person does not answer him at all, instead she continues assessing the elderly woman. She places two fingers by the neck of the elderly woman and whispers, "There's still a pulse." She then looks around and finds, perhaps, the elderly woman's bag by Adrien's knees.
"Give me that bag!" She commands Adrien as she points at a canvas bag by his side.
Adrien immediately grabs it and hands it over to the woman.
"Did you call for an ambulance?" She asks him as she searches in the woman's bag for...something. Adrien does not know for what.
"I-I did," he stutters.
The woman stops to face him, and with a small smile says, "Good."
Adrien freezes once he gets to clearly see her face.
She's...she's beautiful.
The woman goes back to searching in the bag. "I knew it," she utters with relief as she pulls out a small but somewhat long tube from the elderly woman's bag. She takes out the plastic cover and punctures the elderly woman's leg with the other part of the tube. The elderly woman starts to gasp for air again and the other woman lets out a sigh of relief.
Adrien had no idea what happened. He does not even know what that woman used to make the elderly woman breathe again. But this is confidently what he is sure of,
This woman is beautiful...and she can heal people as well.
God, I know I asked for a sign...BUT YOU SENT ME AN ANGEL!
The ambulance eventually arrived, and the paramedics helped place the elderly woman on a stretcher and brought her in the ambulance for further medical assessment.
Adrien stands behind the woman, his angel, as she talks to the paramedics.
"Take her to Webford General Hospital. I'm Doctor DC. I work there," she instructs the paramedics and they nod at her in acknowledgement before going back to the ambulance.
The woman then turns to face Adrien and she shows him the brightest and kindest smile he has ever seen in his whole entire life. She walks toward him as he stays frozen in spot. "Hey," she starts with placing a hand on his shoulder, "you did well today. Thank you." She smiles again and bows her head at him before entering the ambulance with the patient and other paramedics. The door of the ambulance closes once she enters and the sirens blare again as it makes its way to the hospital.
And Adrien has not moved an inch at all.
God sent him an angel.
God sent him an angel.
God sent him an ANGEL!
He knew it! At that moment, he knew his calling!
He fumbles with his pocket as he grabs his phone. Immediately he dials his mother's number.
"Hi, Adrien!" His mother answers after the third ring.
"Mother!" Adrien exclaims out loud, "Is...is father with you as well?!"
"Not too loud, Adrien! But yes, he's here with me. Why?-"
"Place your phone on speaker mode right now!" He says with all excitement rushing through his veins.
"Yes, Adrien?" His father speaks into the phone and this is a guarantee that his mother's phone is now on speaker mode.
"Father! Mother! Is...is it alright for me to go back to school?!"
"S-School?" His mother stammers.
"Why do you want to go back to school?" His father asks. "Are you planning to take up a master's degree?"
"No! I...I want to be a nurse!" Adrien declares out loud and with pride.
"W-WHAT?!"
