Part 13: What do You Mean, Proof?

Black grimly accepted her new position as commander. She promised that she'd try her best to keep everything in order and get us back safely, but couldn't give a definite.

I felt awful for Brown She'd been close friends with almost everyone on board. First, one of her closest friends was killed, then we ejected the wrong person—which means she's really gone, not just the impostor version—and then her lover was practically executed in front of her.

Brown and Black ejected Purple soon after we finished with Red. Green, Yellow and I cleaned up Purple's blood. We spent nearly an hour scrubbing it from the crevices of the wall, and just as we thought we were done, we noticed more that had found its way into Admin. The thick reek of iron in the air made me nauseous.

Yellow flat-out refused to talk to me. He gave no response to anything I tried to say. The moment we stopped cleaning, Yellow left the room in a rush. I followed him.

He actually spoke to me this time, but the conversation didn't exactly go well. Yellow turned around and snarled, "What the hell do you want?" as I caught up to him.

"I just want to talk for a bit," I said, trying to sound unvexed by his snap.

"I thought I couldn't be trusted. Maybe you should go hide with everyone else so I don't kill you," he growled.

"I—no, it's not like that," I said quietly.

Yellow sighed, brushing his hair away from his face. "You should get back to your tasks. I'm done talking with you."

"What task are you working on? Do you need a hand?" I asked.

"Persistent, huh," he muttered. "On my way to Medbay to submit my scan. Wait—the scan! I'm going to get the others to watch me. The scan will prove me innocent!"

"Wait—what do you mean, proof? The scan can be used as proof?" I asked, surprised.

"I'm guessing so. If the impostor isn't a human, then the scan would show something wrong. I asked the others earlier today, and they said they've already done it. None of them seemed to be nervous about it. I believe them that they did it."

"I haven't scanned yet. I should do it too, just in case they needed any more proof in my favor," I said.

"Might as well. Go to Medbay; I'll grab the others and meet you there." Yellow turned and headed back down the hallway.

I walked alone the rest of the way to the Medbay. It was odd, in a way, for the ship to be so empty. Half of our crew is now dead. Well, four of our crewmates. The real Red would be back home waiting for us.

I'd never been in the Medbay alone before now. The room had an unsettling atmosphere when it was this quiet. A faint beeping noise echoed rhythmically from somewhere in the back room. I wasn't sure whether or not the noise was something normal. The scanning platform rose up in the corner of the room, in front of an array of screens and switches built into the wall.

Brown's voice slowly came into earshot. "I didn't realize you could use the scan to prove innocence," she said as she entered the room. The other four followed her.

"If I'd known, I wouldn't have done mine," Black added.

"I think we've all agreed that you're safe," Yellow assured.

"Why don't we just scan twice?" I suggested.

"We can't. When I was checking the machine, I found that the system only has enough memory for everyone to scan once. Someone obviously forgot to clear its data before the journey, and I was explicitly told not to mess with something like that," Yellow explained.

As soon as everyone was watching, I stepped onto the platform. I squinted my eyes against the bright green light as it slowly traveled over me. Pixelated words appeared on the small screen with each flash of the light. Quiet mechanical sounds accompanied the letters.

I had to blink against one more flash of light before a long buzz signified the conclusion of the scan. I stepped down from the platform and turned to face the other four.

"There. We happy now?" I asked with a shrug.

Black nodded. "I believed you before, but this proves it."

"Damn. Sorry for accusing you earlier, Cy," Green said.

"Your turn, Yellow," Brown encouraged.

"What is the point of the scan?" Green cut in.

"To monitor our health throughout the journey. The machine records all kinds of data, but only displays the most basic information to create a profile. We're supposed to scan once a week for all four months. You all need proof in my favor, so I won't keep you waiting any longer." Yellow pressed the Start Scan button and stepped onto the platform. He remained absolutely still as the green light traveled over him.

"What the hell?" Yellow cried, jumping off of the platform. A rapid, screechy beeping emanated from the machine; Yellow frantically stabbed at the controls to turn it off. The screen began flashing all sorts of colors.

I backed away from Yellow, horrified. The others did too. Despite his panicked efforts, the noises only got louder.

"I told you, this thing doesn't work properly," he shrieked. "Green, you come try!"

Green stepped up onto the platform. The scan began to progress, but stopped after three seconds with another round of loud beeping. The screen flashed again with indiscernible letters.

"See? It happens with him too!" Yellow cried.

"It was already broken when Green started, that's unfair to use him," Brown pointed out. "You said it yourself, the scan is proof of innocence, and it completely shorted out when you tried to use it. Maybe you rigged the machine to say you were innocent, and that caused it to break."

Black shook her head in disapproval. "Green filled me in on what happened during the meeting, and I completely disagree with what was discussed. Why are we still accusing people when the impostor was voted out? Yellow, you said it yourself, this machine wasn't properly prepared beforehand."

"Thank you, Black!" Yellow cried.

"Let's meet in the middle. How about this: we go about our tasks, but keep a close eye on Yellow. Black, stay with him at all times. If he tries to sneak away, or if something happens to you, we know it's him," Green suggested.

"Fine by me," Black agreed. "I trust him."

"Same. Nothing will happen, because I'm innocent," Yellow said, obviously relieved.
