Part 11: The Same Excuse
Yellow and Green each held onto one of Red's arms as we traveled to the meeting table. Red begged us to listen to him, pleaded for me to defend him, screamed to get Green away from him. I don't know why he thought I could defend him; he was grasping at any opportunity possible.
God, no, not this, none of us are ready for this, I can't handle another death, especially not Purple, she's so fucking sweet, and such an awesome woman . . . and what about Brown?
"Now, if Green really killed Purple, can you give us the reason why his uniform was somehow clean of blood within seconds of the kill?" Brown snarled as we stood around the table.
After a moment of hesitation, Red said quietly, "I can't."
"Exactly. I don't think we need much discussion about this," Yellow hissed.
"Please, you need to believe me, I was framed—"
"Don't you dare use the same excuse Pink did," I snapped.
"Pink was telling the truth!"
"Oh, shit," Yellow gasped. "She was telling the truth."
Everyone went silent. Their eyes widened in horror. The color drained from Red's face as he doubled over onto the table with his face buried in his arms.
"What about the evidence against her?" Green pointed out.
"She must have been telling the truth about the spider on Lime's suit. Red probably placed the syringe in her pocket to frame her," Brown reasoned.
"Should we try to find her? It's only been a few days. She could still be alive out there somewhere," Red begged.
"We sent her out in her ship clothes without a helmet," Green said, shaking his head. "She would have suffocated within seconds. And space is so vast that it would be next to impossible to find her body."
There was a very brief silence which was broken by Yellow. "Okay, we fucked up. I don't even think fucked up is good enough to describe what we did. But we know who it is now, so no one else will be killed."
"Black, did you see anything happen?" Green asked.
"I was—we—sorry," she moaned. Her initial rush of anger had worn off, and she appeared shaken and rather pale. "I walked around the corner to see Red standing over Purple's body, holding the gun. He just looked at me and ran. Like I was stupid and couldn't see him. When I got close, I could see that his shirt was sprayed with blood."
"Listen, before we do anything else, we need to get rid of Red. I don't want to die up here. None of us want to die up here. You all know that." I felt myself beginning to panic again, although I wasn't sure why.
"Red, just to add to the overwhelming evidence, how are you staying so calm throughout this whole situation?" Green probed. "And staying so quiet?"
Black suddenly stood up. "I have to go," she gasped.
"Why? Can't you wait until we're done?" Yellow said.
"I suppose I could, but I'd rather not throw up all over the room," Black retorted before dashing down the hall.
"So, after we eject Red—" I started.
"Investigate Green instead," Red cut in. "He's a danger to the ship! Why are you only looking at the 'evidence' on my side instead of even considering—"
"Red, one more word out of you and you're sealing your fate," Yellow said.
"Yellow, you hold no authority on this ship, and you never have. Stop trying to sound tough. You're going to eject me anyway. I'm trying to change your minds before it's too late," Red said, sounding desperate. Yellow glanced back at him, looking rather offended.
"Before we eject him, I have a theory," Green began.
"No. Shut the fuck up and focus on the bitch who killed my girlfriend," Brown snarled in a shaky voice, leaning over the table and pointing at Red with a blood-streaked hand.
