Part 10: Get to Electrical

It was hard to force myself to get out of bed, just like it had been for the past two days. Now that the impostor was gone, I had no lingering anxiety, but I'd rather have that than the heart-wrenching grief of knowing I was never going to see my crewmate—and best friend—ever again.

It's been days now, but I still can't seem to get over the trauma of their deaths. Never will I admit it to my crewmates, but even though Pink is gone, I'm afraid of what's going to happen with those of us remaining on board. The mood in the ship is more stressful and tense than it had ever been. No one is working on tasks together anymore. There have been several occasions where I've entered a room, and someone else in it bolted out.

Despite everyone's general paranoia, I've noticed that Brown and Black have been together a lot. I think Black has been trying to console her. She's good at doing that. Brown and Yellow are the only two I feel truly safe around. I trust Black somewhat, but not enough to be alone around. I still have a weird feeling about Purple.

I haven't seen Brown and Purple together once since the last meeting. Purple's entire demeanor changed after that meeting. Her enthusiastic, energetic composure was gone. She doesn't really speak anymore, and I don't see her often. Brown looked tired. That's the best way I could describe her. She looked like her soul had been stripped away.

It's been, what, twelve days since the launch? Not even two weeks up here. It's felt way longer than that. A few of us were in the cafeteria—some making breakfast, some chatting in hushed tones. I stayed at the edge of the room, barely awake with my face pressed into my arms. I didn't know what I should be doing.

"Cy?" Green's voice snapped me out of my daze.

"Hm?" I mumbled, blinking against the light.

"I asked if you wanted me to make you a coffee. You look like you could use one."

"Nah," I sighed. The thought of eating anything sickened me. "Thanks for offering."

Although today's task list was relatively short, the four short tasks still sounded overwhelming. I left the cafeteria after a few minutes before anyone else could approach me.

"Monitor plants in O2? How the hell do I do that?" I muttered to myself. I hope I can figure it out by myself, since I am not in the mood to talk with anyone right now.

Moments before I reached O2, a loud buzzing sound split the air before the lights flickered and quickly died. I jumped backward against a wall to keep some sort of direction.

Distant panicked shouts echoed throughout the ship. Everyone was probably still in the cafeteria. I tried to retrace my steps, but with no light in the ship, it was impossible to tell where I was. The fact that I hadn't fully memorized the layout of the station yet didn't make things any easier.

"What happened?" I screamed.

"I don't know!" Purple yelled back. Well—I think it was Purple. I could just make out someone—Red?—saying we needed to fix the electricity.

I staggered through the darkness, repeatedly slamming into invisible walls and—equipment? Some other big things that I hope aren't important. Losing my vision in an unfamiliar place was completely disorienting. The fact that everyone was shouting in a panic didn't help, either.

"Get to Electrical," Brown yelled. "I'm in there right now, and I need two of you to help turn the lights back on. Follow the sound of my voice." Although it was reassuring to hear voices and know at least someone was okay, I wanted to tell her to stop screaming.

To my relief, I soon saw a dim green light flashing in the hallway. Feeling more confident in my location, I quickened my pace and turned the corner into the room. I promptly tripped over what felt like a loop of wire, confirming I was in Electrical.

The green light came from a panel of switches. Brown's face was partially illuminated when she turned to me. "Okay, Cyan, I need you to watch that light over there. When it turns on, flick the switch underneath it. That'll reset the lights."

Just as I flipped the switch, I heard a loud bang, and the lights turned on. It startled me, but Brown said, "That sounds good. Lights are back on. Thanks for helping." She flashed a smile at me and turned to leave the room. Black, who had apparently been next to her, smiled as well and branched off in the other direction. Yellow was also next to me. Green emerged from behind the divider.

"Holy shit, that scared me," Yellow laughed halfheartedly as the three of us walked out of the room together.

Just as he finished speaking, I heard a scream from down the hall. A drawn-out, howling scream that sent chills down my spine. I raced ahead of the other two, trying to find the source. I rounded the corner and immediately recoiled in horror.

Brown was knelt on the ground right outside Admin, bawling. Purple was sprawled motionless in front of her. The wall was covered in a spray of blood, and more of it pooled around Purple's head.

Somewhere in front of us, I heard Black screaming, "You did it! Where the hell are you going? You killed her!"

Green shoved past me and ran to see what was going on. I followed him. Outside Medbay, Black had Red pinned to the wall by his wrists. They were both shouting, Black accusing him of killing Purple, and Red desperately pleading his innocence. He tried to struggle free, but Black didn't let up.

"You were holding the gun," she snapped. "There's blood on your face. How the hell do you explain that?"

Red glanced toward us, saw Green and I, and shrieked, "Green did it! I saw him, I saw him kill her!"

"Sure," Black snarled, leaning up and visibly tightening her grip. "You didn't think to tell me that before he showed up?"

"Green was in Electrical with us," I added.

"Let me go," Red shouted, struggling even harder.

Black eventually let go of one arm and dragged him to the cafeteria by the other. "We know what you did," she growled. "You aren't getting out of this."

"It was Green! Why aren't you believing me?" Red cried.

"Because there is absolutely no reason to believe you."

I trailed behind them and eventually stopped, in shock of what had just happened. I trusted him. He's in charge of this ship. What else did he do?

"Yellow, get down here. I call an emergency meeting," Green shouted down the hall. Yellow rounded the corner and recoiled in horror.

I cautiously made my way toward Brown. She was near hysterics; I didn't blame her one bit. I gingerly touched her shoulder and said quietly, "Let's go to the table."

"And just leave her here?" she howled.

I didn't know what to say to that. Yellow came to my rescue and said, "We need to vote out whoever did this to her. We'll come back right after."

As I entered the cafeteria, I couldn't help but glance behind me quickly. Brown gently brushed Purple's hair away from her face, bent down quickly, then slowly stood up. I quickly turned back around before she saw me.

Did she just . . .

Oh, my God.

They loved each other.

Looking back on their friendship—well, 'friendship'—it should have been obvious. The teasing from rest of the crew, the two avidly defending each other, the way Brown laughed around her . . . How did I never know this?
