chapter 1 - untimely goodbyes
*the sound of the school bell bellows through the halls*
That noise would signify the end of the school day, but it would also mark the ending of the final class of this term. Next time the students would walk through the doors, into the halls of Fukuoka High, they would arrive as upperclassmen. From an outside lens, Fukuoka High is a well respected school which has produced several commendable members of society. But in all honesty, it's just like any other normal school. There's slackers, high achievers, troubled youth and coasters.
Second year student, l/n y/n sat in her math class gazing out the second floor window watching as the once deserted campus grounds flood with students. It was difficult to make out individual faces amongst the swarms of people, onlooking from such a distance. what she could make out was the excited expressions which lay upon her upperclassmen. They were finally free of the cage they had been cooped up in for the past three years, while y/n alongside her fellow students could only act as onlookers as they soar off into the next exciting stage of their lives. To most there was a suffocating sense of envy, others caring little for the prospects of their seniors.
The sound of shuffling feet, the sharp sounds of chairs departing from tables filled the room, followed by the sound of a booming voice which caused a stop to all the noise. Despite the commanding tone he usually held, paired with the less than 'friendly' expression which typically adorned his face, the students looked up to see the stoic man hold a somewhat gentle expression.
"I hope you all have a wonderful break and use this time to rest and rejuvenate. But before you depart I have some words I would like to say if you don't mind..."
A long pause followed by a resounding silence fell across the room. A series of dumbfounded, bored, doting and neutral expressions dispersed themselves across the room.
"It has been a pleasure teaching you all this term. You've made great improvements this year and I have not a doubt in my mind that you will all continue to do so next term.."
A low sigh fell across Mr Iwaizumi's lips as he began to execute the next sentence, which he had previously formulated in his head. This passing moment didn't go unnoticed by the students in the room.
"GET ON WITH IT MR IWA, I WANT TO GO HOME!"
a clearly irritated Yamamoto jested in a more light-hearted way than his tone suggested. The sudden prod from his student seemed to have stirred Mr Iwaizumi out of his self induced trance he was fixed into. A concerned look momentarily flashed across y/n's face, clearly having taken notice of the falter her favourite teacher was stuck in. Clearing his throat and shaking his head to regain his train of thought, he stopped briefly before uttering the next sentence to his class.
"I apologise, I wouldn't want to keep you from whatever extremely important business you have at home Yamamoto."
Earning a scattered laugh around the classroom, Yamamoto's face could not help but fill with an embarrassed flush. Oh how he would miss the carefree laughs and expressions that would fill the room as well as the friendly banter he would upkeep with his students. 'I really wish it didn't have to be this way' Iwaizumi thought to himself, wallowing in the sense of self pity which had consumed him this entire week knowing that he would have to say his final goodbyes to his favourite class.
One face among the class did not glimmer with the same carefree laughter which came over her classmates. Hers adorned with one more of concern, dare say a cold calculating look as if she was trying to solve an unsolvable riddle. As her eyes glanced over the figure of her sensei at the front of the room, she couldn't help but feel uneasy. The entire week he seemed to be acting differently. Strangely even. Something wasn't right, but the whole week she couldn't put her finger on it. On several occasions she had made the effort to ask if he was doing ok, to which he nonchalantly brushed off with any fad excuse in the book. Knowing Mr Iwaizumi well, y/n was not fully convinced. But out of respect for him, which she had in buckets, she had no choice but to take his word and trust that he would be back to his usual self in due course. However it was undeniable that his 'few words' he chose to share at the end of class, and subsequently the end of term, held a sombre undertone. And it seemed that y/n was the only one to catch onto this. Iwaizumi's eyes quickly flicked in y/n's direction, a torn expression on his face. He knew she wasn't stupid, and it was obvious to him she'd figured out the sadness laced in his words. If leaving the rest of the class behind would be tough, saying goodbye to y/n would be a whole other world of heartache. Pulling himself together once again, he proceeded to speak up for the final time.
"I digress. What I mean to say is that I want you all to know that you should be very proud of what you've achieved and I hope you'll all keep it up next year." His words came out in an uncomfortable, out of character way which even had a few other students in the class to mutter among themselves in confusion.
"We appreciate sensei, thankyou for teaching us!" Kelsey, another one of the students in the room chimed in sensing the confusion in the room.
"It was my pleasure. Well thankyou all, you are dismissed.." clearing his throat, Iwaizumi watched his students filter out the room bidding them small farewells.
Assuming all the students had filed out of the classroom, due to the tranquillity which fell across the classroom, Iwaizumi slumped back in his chair letting out a drawn out smile. Hunched over, he allowed his hands to run across his face, his elbows resting on his muscular thighs. His expression appeared trouble, even though the main phase of his parting was over, he still had the worse part to come. Knowing her past, it was likely that y/n would take the news of him leaving Japan to live in Argentina for a few months very poorly.
Y/N lost her father at a very young age meaning she never really had the support of a father figure in her life. She likes to call it a severe case of 'daddy issues' but Iwaizumi can't help but scold her for minimising the scale of a problems with loose comedy. When y/n first started high school at Inarizaki she very much kept herself to herself. It quickly became apparent to her mother that she wasn't making very many friends, and that's when her good ole mother's instinct kicked into gear. The following day she practically ran to the principal's office and spilled y/n's entire tragic backstory to the unsuspecting principal. Little to say, the principal was touched, it would be a lie to say he didn't shed a few tears. If this were Japan's Got Talent, l/n y/n would safely be through to the next round. The principal gave m/n his word that he would ensure that y/n receives the appropriate guidance she would need to make her time in the school as comfortable as possible. It just so happens that as said conversation was taking place, a certain someone would find themselves walking past the office. Knowing full well that the principal's words were shallow, Iwaizumi took the responsibility upon himself to keep an eye on l/n when he could. Now y/n is ending her second year at Inarizaki and the two are practically thick as thieves. Everyone in the school body understands and respects the nature of their relationship, many feeling envious to how l/n is able to confide in Iwaizumi. They would tell each other everything. Well... they did tell each other everything.
The gentle sound of y/n clearing her throat echoed in Iwaizumi's ear, as he lifted his head to come face to face with a concerned look in her eye. Removing his elbows from their resting position on his thighs, he leaned back in his chair to an upright position.
"Are you feeling alright Iwa? You've got that sad looking expression on your face. I told you already before its going to be real unfortunate if the wind changes and your stuck with that ugly look on your mug." y/n was not one to mince her words. No matter how poorly it came across she would always say what she meant. Iwaizumi was very much used to her manner of speak and cannot help to stifle a laugh despite it usually being a direct attack at his ego.
"You never miss a beat do you?" Iwa said with a gentle shake of his head, as he arose from his seat and began to fiddle with the things on his desk.
"Nope! But seriously though, you've been acting like this all week. It's not your time of the month is it?" A mischievous grin couldn't help but plaster itself across her face. Although inside you felt quite the opposite, but knowing that if Iwaizumi was down she could do her best to cheer him up the only way she knew how. Poking fun at him.
"You're a menace you know that right?" gently poking her cheek with his index finger "I'm alright, its just been a tiring week. I've had a lot to do is all."
Scanning him over with a scrutinising look, y/n crossed her arms over her torso causing her bag to fall off her shoulder and rest on her forearm. At this Iwaizumi choked back a scoff as he observed the scene before him.
"Hmmm... alright then I'll trust you. Anyways, I need you to come with me to pick up my prescription tomorrow ok? The new pharmacist won't let me collect it myself without a guardian to sign for it. I'd go by myself but I don't feel like arguing with her winey ass again."
With a sigh, Iwaizumi took a step forward, fixing y/n's bag which was still resting on her forearm. Lifting it to her shoulder, he began "Sure, I'll be there but you really shouldn't be agitating Ms Senju, she's only following the rules."
"Don't you start defending her, she hates me and you know it!" A playful look of betrayal pasted across y/n's face.
"Yeah, yeah whatever. Now get your ass home y/n, I'll text you tomorrow. You better get going if you're going to visit your mother like you said so get moving. Tell her I said hello." Iwa started to lightly push her back in the direction of the door.
"Fine, I'm going now. BYE ZUMI!" and like that she whizzed out of the door, not giving Iwaizumi the chance to respond. The smile that was plastered across his face was bittersweet, nothing but guilt was consuming him.
'Bye n/n...'
