What Dreams Are Made Of
After dealing with Travis and Jessica, life began to quieten down for Cassie and Josh for the next few months. After one more fiesty encounter with Jessica, where Cassie punched her, they hadn't heard a peep from her or Travis since. It was now late August, and Cassie was due in a couple of weeks, but never the less, today was a special day as today, Josh would finally be off crutches from the accident. He had allowed plenty of time for his other injuries to heal and this was the last part in his road to being 100% fit and healthy again.
Josh: You know I'd rather see you at home resting, prepping for this little one.
Cassie: Both me and Bumpy agree we should be here, they wanted to see their dad complete his road to recovery.
Josh: Still pretty shocked that Trav could be a part of all this...
Cassie: My God, I hope he isn't. As far as I'm concerned, you're the father of this baby. It's what we mums call a mother's instinct.
Josh: Well, who am I to argue with the world's most amazing mum?
Josh and Cassie kissed before they quickly separated as the doctor had returned with the test results for Josh's knee.
Doctor: Well, from what we can see, the knee has fully recovered, and the tissue, along with the cartilage seem to be holding together just fine. In my opinion, you won't be needing those anymore.
He pointed to the crutches while all three of them smiled.
Doctor: The only bit of advice I would say is go easy on the knee for the next few days. Take baby steps at first then try and push yourself a bit more every day.
Josh: I will, doc. Thanks a lot for that, it's been a huge weight off my mind.
Doctor: My pleasure. And also, congratulations on the baby. I'm sure you both will be amazing parents.
Cassie: Thank you, doctor.
As he left, Cassie helped Josh get back up to his feet as he steadily put pressure on his leg. Just as he was about to lose his balance, Cassie grabbed his hand and corrected him.
Josh: Phew, thanks for that. Might need to check my bearings a little.
Cassie: No kidding, now we'd better get back, cos my mum instincts say that this little one is hungry.
She rubbed her bump as Josh then put his hand on top of it.
Josh: You're one heck of a little one, I'll give you that! And you haven't even popped out of your little hidey hole yet!
Cassie smiled as Josh was talking to the bump.
Josh: Now come on, let's get you two fed.
Cassie: You sure you'll be okay cooking?
Josh: You've done enough for me these past few months. I think it's about time I return the favour.
They held hands as they headed for the car and drove off back to their apartment, where Josh made dinner and kept both Cassie and their unborn baby well fed.
2 weeks later...
Josh's knee had fully recovered now, and one morning, he was making an early lunch, when all of a sudden, he heard a loud scream coming from the living room, where Cassie was. When he saw the sight before him, a small pool of water had formed in between Cassie's legs, as she held on to the edge of the sofa with all the grip she had.
Josh: Looks like they're finally ready to pop out!
Cassie: Let's go, quickly!
Josh ran to get the baby bag he packed for Cassie when the time would eventually come. He tossed it around his shoulder before running back to Cassie and helping her to the car.
Josh: Easy does it...
He gently laid Cassie down in the back seats, while putting the baby bag in the passenger seat. He then set off for the hospital, a little annoyed at himself as every time he heard Cassie moaning in pain, he couldn't comfort her as he was driving.
Cassie: Ohhh, it hurts... It hurts so much, Josh...
Josh: Just hang in there baby, we're almost at the hospital, not long now!
After another 10 minutes, they arrived and Josh threw the bag over his shoulder again before picking Cassie up out of the car and carrying her bridal style towards the doors. When they got inside, a couple of doctors took notice of the situation, and got a bed for Cassie as they wheeled her into the maternity ward, with Josh never leaving her side.
Cassie: Oh god, oh god, oh god...
Josh held her hand through all of the pain his love was going through, and never let go, while the doctor gave their diagnosis.
Doctor: Okay, from what we can see, Cassie, you're 5cm dilated already. If all goes to plan, you should be ready to give birth in the next few hours.
Cassie weakly nodded as Josh acknowledged the doctor while they left.
Josh: I can't wait. Do you think it's gonna be a boy or girl?
Cassie: I don't really mind, but I can guess it'll probably be a girl.
Josh: Personally, I also don't really mind, I'll love them just as much as I love you, whether it's a boy or a girl.
As Cassie faded away for a nap, Josh quickly got on the phone to a few friends and family, and told them of the current situation. Josh's parents, Cassie's parents and Leah all managed to get to the hospital, to see what was happening.
Leah: So, how are you coping with Cass going into labour?
Josh: Honestly, it was a little sudden cos it just came outta nowhere. Like Randy's RKO.
Leah: I bet it did. So you excited to meet your baby?
Josh: Yeah, I can't wait. Me and her have decided to keep the gender a secret so that even we won't know until the moment they're born.
Leah: That's pretty smart, cos then everyone will have the same reaction...
After a couple of hours of talking to Leah as well as catching up with his parents, Josh could see that Cassie was beginning to wake up. But a slight flutter in her eyes soon turned into a sharp wide eyed moment as Cassie felt another sharp pain.
Cassie: Owww... Oh god...
Quite by chance, the doctor who tended to her when she arrived was passing by and happened to hear her painful moans. He checked on Cassie, and came to their conclusion.
Doctor: Okay, it's now 10cm, Cassandra, so it's time to push. You ready?
Unable to form words from her pain, she nodded gently as she grabbed Josh's hand and held it as tightly as she could as she then began pushing.
Cassie: Uggggghhhhh...
After a couple of strong pushes, some progress was made.
Doctor: I can see the head, just a couple of more pushes should do it!
Cassie was now crying fully as she looked into Josh's eyes with a look of sorrow on her face.
Cassie: J-Josh... I... I can't... I can't do this...
He gripped Cassie's hand and kissed it before letting her hold on to it tightly.
Josh: Cassie, just think of that magical moment when it'll be over and our baby will be here. All it'll take is a couple of pushes. Everyone in this room believes in you, and most importantly... I believe in you. Always have done and always will. Now, let's meet our child. You CAN do this, babe.
After taking Josh's words into her head, she took a couple of deep breaths and began pushing once more, with all her might. And after another solid 10 minutes of pushing, finally, they were rewarded with the happiest sound of them all - a new life.
Doctor: Here we are, then, would you like to cut the cord, Josh?
Josh: For my child... anything.
He took care while cutting it before the doctor had a look at the genitals, and then wrapping the baby up in a towel before handing it over to Cassie. She gently took hold of it as she began to cry once more, but this time, they were tears of joy.
Cassie: Oh my god, I can't believe it.
Josh: Neither can I, baby. We did it. YOU did it. And I could not be more proud of you.
Cassie smiled at her boyfriend before the doctor asked the all important question.
Doctor: So, would you like to know the baby's gender?
Josh: Now's the best time, we've been in suspense for these last few months so lay it on us!
Doctor: Well, I'm pleased to say you have a beautiful, healthy baby... girl. Congratulations.
Everyone in the room clapped for Josh and Cassie, with the latter cradling the newborn in her arms.
Cassie: Look, she's got your eyes!
Josh: Oh yeah, she does! She's just amazing.
Leah: SHE'S gonna need a name sooner or later...
Josh: No need to think about it. Me and Cassie planned for this ages ago, we know exactly what we're gonna call her.
Cassie: Yeah, that's right.
Josh and Cassie looked into each other's eyes before saying the name at the same time.
Josh & Cassie: Isabel Lily Stevens.
Leah and Cassie's mum cried a few tears of their own in happiness, while Josh and Cassie's dad patted Josh on the back, and looked at the sight around them.
Jonathan: Cassie, I am so proud of you. What you and Josh have been through all but confirms that you and him should have been together from the start.
David: And I'm proud of you too, son. You've come a long way in life, and you've shown me and your mother that you can go through just about anything.
Josh got up and shook Jonathan's hand while he was hugging his dad.
Leah: Even estranged ex girlfriends and serious injuries!
Everyone then shared a laugh as Josh held his little finger out to stroke Isabelle's cheek while the little one was beginning to go to sleep in Cassie's arms.
Josh: Just one more thing. Doctor, would it be possible to do a DNA test on Isabelle? It's just...
He looked around at everyone and stared at Cassie for a few seconds before she smiled and he continued what he was saying.
Josh: It's just, I want to make absolutely sure I am the dad. We had a little falling out before, which put my nerves on edge a little.
The doctor smiled and nodded.
Doctor: No problem.
He took a small swab of the inside of Isabelle's mouth before doing the same to Josh and taking them to be tested.
Doctor: Bear with me, I'll be back soon.
Liz: Well, we'd better be heading back.
Susie: Yeah, same for us. Got work tomorrow, and it's kinda important.
Josh: No worries. Thanks to all of you for being here.
David: We wouldn't have missed this moment for the world, son. Take care of them. As well as yourself.
Josh: I will, Dad. See you soon.
The two shared a hug and a wave as both families left, leaving just Leah, Josh and Cassie in the room, while Isabelle was fast asleep.
Cassie: Why didn't you go home too, Leah? You look tired as hell!
Leah: I'm fine, I just wanna know the DNA results before I go.
Josh: Ahh, I see...
Just then, the doctor returned with a clipboard showing the results of the DNA test.
Doctor: Well, I have the results here. And, from what I can see, I don't know what you were so worried about, because I can confirm that Isabelle IS your daughter, Josh.
Josh breathed a massive sigh of relief as Leah hugged him from behind before hugging Cassie as best she could. She kissed Isabelle on the forehead before she had to leave as well, leaving Josh and Cassie alone.
Cassie: So, she is yours after all.
Josh: You have no idea how much relief I am feeling right now, especially after hearing those words.
Cassie: I was nervous too, the last thing I wanted was Travis as Issie's father.
Josh: Forget about them, let's focus on the here and the now. Together. All three of us.
Cassie: The start of a new chapter in our lives. The start of being a proper family.
