Chapter 27: Goofy Joins the Team
"The semi-finals have resulted in just Team One and Team 99 going head-to-head in the finals. The grueling competition has really taken its toll on the athletes this afternoon. Let's strap in for our final and deciding event: The "X" Games triathlon. Yes, we're seconds away from what promises to be an exciting finale between these two fierce competitors," Chuck announced.
All eight competitors lined up against the edge of the starting line, all of them in roller blades.
"Take your positions. On your mark, get set..." the referee announced.
Bradley pressed a button on his remote, making the rockets on PJ's skates ignite and he blasted away. The ref blew his whistle.
"False start! False start! Both teams back on the line. Get back here," he said.
"Hold on! Bradley just blasted our fourth guy into the next state," Max stated.
"That is absurd! I did nothing of the sort!" Bradley lied.
"That's what my dad has been trying to tell me," Max realized in anger.
"Can we get on with the race, please? Wait a minute. Uh, one, two, three. You don't seem to have enough team members now. Do you?" Bradley asked with a smirk.
Jamie about tackled him, but Max stopped her.
"Rules are rules. You have to field a full team, or you forfeit to the Gammas," the ref explained.
"That's unfair! We don't know anyone else," Max protested.
A shadow cast over them as the Zeppelin appeared from above.
"Oh, seems we have a little delay here, folks," Ken said.
They looked to see Ken off to the side, reporting.
"Unless..." Jamie replied.
Max looked at her and nodded, knowing what she meant.
"Team 99's short a man and will be disqualified if one is not found in just one and one half minutes," Ken continued.
Max shoved him out of the way and grabbed the microphone.
"Dad, it's me, Max. If you're out there..." he remarked.
"Oh, my gosh. Maxie's in trouble!" Goofy exclaimed from the stands.
"Dad, relax, I'm not in trouble. It's just the team needs you. I need you," Max confessed.
"You hear that? I gotta go help him! Good thing I always carry my lucky horseshoe. I'm a-comin', Maxie!" Goofy shouted.
He tripped after running into a popcorn guy, fell down the stairs, bounced off a tent, and went flying.
"Well, I wouldn't blame him if he didn't come," Max groaned.
"No, don't say that. He wouldn't bail on you. No matter what," Jamie assured.
"That's it! They're disqualified," Bradley mocked.
"Nope, nope, nope. Not yet. There's still five more seconds. Four, three, two..." the ref counted.
Then Goofy crashed landed and when he came up, he did his famous laugh and the crowd went wild.
"Yes!" Jamie screamed.
"Come on, no fair! He's too late!" Bradley protested to the ref.
"Not by my watch," the referee smirked.
"Son, about the last couple of weeks..." Goofy tried to apologize.
"Dad, what do ya say we take care of this race first?" Max suggested.
"You got it!" Goofy agreed.
